Australia / Annie Agnes GAINEY
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 08:30 BST (UK)  »
I have just been told that my grandmother, Annie Agnes GAINEY  was employed at the Commercial Hotel, Warialda, as a coloured cleaner in the mid to late 1920s. My research to date indicates that she was white. Her parents were Hilton William Ambrose Gainey and Elizabeth Agnes Jane Gilligan. She was born in Tingha on 13 November, 1907. Is there any way I can establish why/how/if she was actually coloured? All suggestions will be gratefully pursued. Maxell

Australia / Giuseppe DiFINA
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find outgoing passenger records for Giuseppe DiFINA. Between the years of 1920 and 1932, he made a number of trips to Australia where he worked for a period of time and then returned to Filicudi, Sicily to his wife and family. I have found a number of incoming records in that period but cannot seem to find outgoing passenger lists. If I could find outgoing lists, I could perhaps eliminate some of the dates I have found for incoming passengers. To my knowledge, he worked in Victoria, probably close to Melbourne, in some sort of activity involving trees - possibly land clearing. As this man was my husband's grandfather, I would really like to add to his knowledge of the man's life. Any assistance or suggestions would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Giuseppe was born in Sicily on 23 Oct 1892 and died on 15 June 1932.Thanks, Maxene

Renfrewshire / THORPE - children of James and Jane
« on: Thursday 26 January 17 01:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for birth or baptismal records for children born to Jane (McBrae) and James THORPE between the years of 1823 and 1828. James and Jane were married in Paisley, Renfrewshire in 1823 (marriage recorded as between James Torp and Jean McBrae). The children's names were possibly John (or John George), Rebecca  and Mary. The family returned to Northern Ireland in about 1828. John's death certificate in Australia has him being born in Scotland. The family was Protestant. Any assistance would be appreciated. Maxell.

Australia / Any records of John THORPE in Australia
« on: Saturday 21 January 17 03:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find ANY record of John THORPE who came out to Australia from Northern Ireland as an unnamed child of John (really James) and Jane Thorpe on the Adam Lodge in 1837. He would have been born from 1823 to 1827 so I would estimate that he was 10-13 years old when he arrived. I have managed to find records of the other children (Mary, Anne Jane k.a.Jane, Catherine and Elizabeth). I have also managed to find records for the children born after they arrived in Australia (Alexander, Annie, James and Matilda) but it is as though John did not exist. The father was a stone mason/stone cutter and the family settled at Ravensfield near Maitland. The family was Protestant. The plot thickens because I cannot find a birth record for him neither in Northern Ireland nor Paisley, Renfrewshire in Scotland (where his parents were married in 1823) but the ship's records show 1 male child and 4 female children. I have looked at BDM and Trove and have trawled through various Ancestry family trees but so far I have not been able to find official records for a John THORPE, parents James and Jane. His uncle, John Thorpe, was also a stone mason and he also came to Australia but he was born C1805. Can anyone suggest where else I could look? Thank you, Maxell

World War Two / Ark Royal - Crew List
« on: Thursday 27 November 14 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there is a crew list in existance for Ark Royal for WWII? I am trying to find a crewmember whose surname was Sanderson but we have no first name. We are not sure if he survived or went down with the ship but if we could find a crew list, we would at least have a first name to help with our search. Thank you to anyone who can offer suggestions. We have looked at naval-history.net but so far no luck. Maxell

Australia / Thomas EADY
« on: Thursday 27 November 14 01:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a record of the arrival in Australia of Thomas EADY in about 1906-1909. He would have travelled with his wife, Nellie and son Thomas who was a baby - he turned one on the trip. They travelled from the UK. Thomas was born in Yorkshire in 1884. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Maxell  :)

England / death record for Thomas WRIGHT
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 10:26 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a death record for Thomas WRIGHT who died about 1804. His wife was Mary Lyon. They had two sons, Thomas, born about 1799 and William born about 1803 or 1804. I believe that Thomas (the father) was a well-to-do farmer who left a considerable sum of money to his wife. I have been "trawling" sites trying to find -primarily - Thomas' death record but would also be happy to find their marriage record. Mary (after Thomas' death) married John Ritchie in London in June,1804. Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Maxell

Australia / GAINEY, Dallace Humphrey
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 09:29 BST (UK)  »
I am STILL searching for a death record for Dallace (or maybe Dallas) GAINEY who died in December, 1982. I first tried a couple of years ago but the record was probably not accessible till last year - however, I cannot find the record. He probably died in or around Tingha, NSW. I already have his birth and marriage details, but if anyone can find his death record I would be ecstatic! He was known as Dal in the family. His parents were Elizabeth Agnes Jane (nee Gilligan) and his father was Hilton William Ambrose Gainey. His birth record has his first name spelt Dallance. His wife was Bertha nee Darby and they married in 1933 in Tingha. Can anyone help? Maxell

Australia / John Thoma (k.a. Jack) GAINEY
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 00:58 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a death record for John Thomas (Jack) GAINEY who was born in 1873. His parents were William Alexander Gainey amd Elizabeth (Betty) Manton. Jack married Sarah Fahey in 1896 but left his family in about 1910. When his mother died in 1924 he was listed as one of her surviving children but I have not been able to find a death record for him on the indexes. Any help/guidance/suggestions would be appreciated. Maxell :)
