Angus (Forfarshire) / Jane Wilson Melville Dundee
« on: Wednesday 30 November 16 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking information on the death of Jane Wilson, born abt 1823, Balmerino, Fife. Her husband was Andrew Melville, who was found drowned in Dundee docks in 1877.

When Jane's son, Thomas Melville married in 1889, Jane was deceased. I could not find her in the Dundee 1881 census, nor in a Scotlandspeople search, although their new site is still being updated.

Perthshire / inchture puzzle
« on: Wednesday 25 December 13 06:51 GMT (UK)  »
I successfully traced 1809 Inchture Parish baptisms for my wife's side of the tree, but the location of the family was a place I hadn't heard of before. Jottistown/Jottislown.
I've Googled the name, but with no luck. I've even tried a few old maps, with the same result

Could it perhaps have been the name of a long-gone farm?

United States of America / Passenger list SS Steel Fabricator
« on: Friday 07 June 13 07:18 BST (UK)  »
The cargo ship SS Steel Fabricator arrived in Savannah Georgia, in November of 1950. As well as general cargo, it carried several passengers. I have searched a few US sites for the manifest/passenger list, but to date have come up with zilch!

One of the passengers was  a Derek Lonnaux, who came from India. I already have a copy of his Petition for Naturalization.

Any  look up, or advice on where I can access that passenger list, would be appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / Lewis Lonnaux
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 13:30 BST (UK)  »
A Lewis Lonnaux was born 4 December 1893 in India, to a Belgian-born father.  A bloke with that same name and DOB died September 1969 in Daytona Beach Florida, as did his wife.
I would like to know when he migrated to the US from the UK, (where he may he lived for a while), or from India.
It was some time before 1951, but for the life of me, I can't find a record of this, or of his wife's marriage/surname anywhere. I do have his Social Security Number, whether that would help or not.

The various spellings and pronounciations of the surname tend to confuse, but any US issued document showing his parentage, or immigration details should do the trick.

Help!

Moray (Elginshire) / John or James Ross?
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 05:50 BST (UK)  »
James Ross was drowned in October 1860, when his ship was wrecked near Lossiemouth in a gale.
His death registration (Enzie Parish) omitted his parentage, his wife's name (Ann Small) and his age, so,  I assumed his parents to be John Ross and Jean McIntosh.   The Duffus Opr's show they had a son, James Ross born in 1821, and the naming pattern of his children include a John and Jean. To add strength to the naming pattern theory, two other kids were named after the parents of Ann Small, James's wife.

There was talk that James's father and an uncle were also drowned the same day!  A search of libraries and newspapers eventually unearthed an article from the Banffshire Journal which indicated that James's father was presumed drowned when his sloop the Ann Garrow broke up near Troup Head (Banffshire) during that same gale. It gives the father's name as JAMES, but I have failed to find any official document that would confirm this. No death cert, nothing.
As everything I have points to James father being JOHN Ross, my research seems to have come to a stop.

Any suggestions, or links to sources would be appreciated.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1851 seamen's crew lists
« on: Friday 11 November 11 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking details of one James Ross from Burghead, Moray, who was a merchant seaman (away from home) at the time of the 1851 census.
I am aware that there is a set of seamen's crewlists CDs available, but as he could have been in any port around the UK, or even a European port, searching each and every CD list would cost me an arm and a leg!
There's a faint possibility that in 1851, James was on the schooner 'Jane and Mary' captained by Elias Suding, as he was drowned when that vessel was wrecked in a gale off Lossiemouth in 1860.

Any search advice would be appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / US Birth of Jane Duncan
« on: Monday 11 April 11 05:35 BST (UK)  »
Between 1865 and 1869-ish, James Duncan and wife Isabella (Mitchell) moved from Dundee, Scotland, to the USA.
A daughter, Jane was born somewhere over there, around 1869, and I have absolutely no idea of where to look for details of the birth, or arrival and departure dates of their ships..........they were back in Dundee some time before the 1911 census.

 HELP!   :-\

Angus (Forfarshire) / Ann Small Duncan or Smith
« on: Monday 17 May 10 05:57 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate anything on the above lass. She was born out of wedlock in Dundee,1892, to Elizabeth/Lizzie Duncan, who later married John Smith in Sunderland,1894. The 1901 census of Lochee/Dundee shows Ann aged 8, living with the Elizabeth, John, and the rest of the family, with her name now shown as Ann SD SMITH.  I cannot find her marriage or death after 1901.

Help!

Durham Lookup Requests / Smiths in Sunderland census
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 06:13 BST (UK)  »
1901 Sunderland census lookup please. John and Elizabeth Smith.
Elizabeth, (nee Duncan) was born Dundee 1870, and the only info I have on the kids is the names I've been given: Toss (?) Lin,(?) Elizabeth, Richard, Georgina, and William. All supposedly born between 1890 and 1900 Some of the kids may also have been born in Dundee. The reason I'm trying Sunderland, is, that is where John and Elizabeth, (aka Lizzie), were married in 1894.

All very vague, I know, but it's worth a try.    ;D
