Worcestershire / Cooper Family
« on: Wednesday 16 May 12 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If there is anyone who's either descended from, related to, or otherwise interested in the Cooper family of Stourbridge, please message me. The family owned a large drapery & silk merchants in the High Street, run by brothers Josiah and William Cooper up until at least the 1880s, when their partnership was dissolved. If this is a branch in your tree, send me a pm.

Hello all,

I am looking for anyone who might have a lady by the name of Sarah Pratt amongst the branches or twigs of their family tree - she was murdered in Birmingham, in April 1860. If she's one of yours, please send me a pm. Many thanks.

Somerset / VERMONT family, Bridgewater
« on: Friday 09 September 11 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for anyone related to the Vermont family from Bridgewater and/or Woolavington who might have any info regarding a Clifford Vermont or his sister, Lily. According to a postcard in my possession, in 1916 she was living at the following address: Prince of Wales, Woolavington, Somerset.

I think Clifford may have been wounded on the Somme. If anyone is connected to either of them, I'd like to hear from you, please.

Many thanks,

Northumberland / St.Paul's Church, North Sunderland
« on: Friday 28 May 10 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if any kind-hearted rootschatter living or working in the vicinity of St.Paul's Church, Main Street, North Sunderland, Seahouses would be willing to take a photo of one of the memorial windows for me?

It was paid for by one of the incumbents in the late C19th, namely the Rev. F.R.Simpson and dedicated to his wife and children.

If anyone can oblige me, I'd be extremely grateful - I've trawled the web without success and living at the opposite end of the country makes a flying visit to do it myself a bit of a non-starter!

If you can help me, please send a pm and I'll furnish my email address.

Many thanks,

The Common Room / Ancestry's latest coup......
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I received this via the SOG today, and thought it might be of general interest, which is why I opted to post it in the Common Room. I suppose it would be too much to hope that the LMA & Guildhall will monitor the quality of Ancestry's work, but hey, mustn't be churlish... 8)

London, UK – 4 September, 2008 – The most comprehensive collection of
historical London records, covering 500 years of the city's history,
is to be made available online for the first time. Following a lengthy
tendering process, Ancestry has secured the exclusive online rights to
digitize and host key records from London Metropolitan Archives (LMA)
and Guildhall Library Manuscripts.

The first records will launch on Ancestry.ca [sic from my email] in
early 2009, with the following prioritised for launch in the coming
year:

· Parish records – records from more than 10,000 Greater London parish
registers of baptisms, marriages and burials dating from the 1530s to
the 20th Century

· Poor Law documents - relating to the administration of poor relief,
including workhouse registers from 1834 onwards

London school admissions – records from 843 individual London schools
dating from the early Victorian times through to 1911, providing
admission and personal details for millions of London students

[100 year closure]

Dr Deborah Jenkins, Assistant Director of the City of London's
Department of Libraries, Archives and Guildhall Art Library, comments:
"It has always been the City of London's goal to make these important
collections available to the wider public through digitisation and so
we are delighted to announce Ancestry as our official partner in
bringing 500 years of London's history online."

The Common Room / Anyone a member of the Tyrrell FHS?
« on: Wednesday 27 February 08 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a contact e-mail address for the Society, (other than the web-manager's), in respect of a membership query, and wondered if anyone on Rootschat might have access to that information.

If so, I'd appreciate it if you'd contact me either via the board, or a pm, please.

Many thanks.

« on: Thursday 18 October 07 15:57 BST (UK)  »
I've just been informed about this website, and thought others might find it interesting. It contains a database of 20,000 prisoners in Bedford, Huntingdon, Cambridge and Ely gaols, with photographs where available.

Check it out here: http://vcp.e2bn.org/

The Common Room / findmypast.com - a query
« on: Thursday 13 September 07 17:17 BST (UK)  »
I have just entered one of my family names in the City of London burials search engine on this website, and it has come up with several hits. Now being a direct descendant of Ebenezer Scrooge, on my mother's side, I'd like to know what kind of details I can expect to find in this database, before forking out my hard-earned.

My wallet and I would therefore be very grateful if some kind soul might be able to enlighten me!

With thanks and regards,

The Common Room / Unusual Christian Name - Origins?
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 14:24 BST (UK)  »
I've come across a christian name that runs in one of the London branches of my family tree, and wondered if anyone might know from which part of the country it originates. I have a vague notion from a dark corner of my mind that it's from Suffolk, but would welcome any input.

It is spelled variously as: Parmeter, Parminter, Parmiter & Parmitta.

Many thanks,
Swampy
