These photographs are from my Steains lines but we have no idea who the people are, so if someone could date them for me, then I can try to figure out which ancestors they may be.  There is one line who lived in the areas of the photographer/s, so it does narrow down the possibilities for me and whilst I am aware mutton chops became popular during or after the American Civil War, I am not sure when the fad hit England.

Thank You

Family History Beginners Board / Baptism entry explanation please?
« on: Monday 21 January 13 05:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have a baptism for October 11, 1810, the child was only 5 days old and it reads in the notes "Privately baptized, received into the Church February 24, 1811.  Mother late Spinster."

The child died in December 1811 and his burial reads "Mother late Mary Browne spinster"

So I checked for the younger siblings and found the 2nd child was christened in 1801 with the same note for the mother.  All are christened with their father's name included and with his surname.

According to an IGI member submission (and yes I know they are not always accurate  :) ) the parents were married in 1798.  I have checked 3 data bases for Holt, Norfolk but cannot find a marriage but I don't think I am wrong to say the mother and father of this baby were never married but lived a defacto relationship.  I am sure if I ordered the films for the parish I'd not find a marriage in 1798.

Can someone please confirm if I am thinking along the right lines?
Regards
Debra

Census and Resource Discussion / 1871 UK census query
« on: Wednesday 02 January 13 05:20 GMT (UK)  »
I believe some of the pages of the 1871 census were either lost or damaged.  I am having difficulty locating a family who appear to have not left the areas of Islington & Pancras in Middlesex.  There were 3 sisters, all with different surnames due to marriages & who are with each other in every other census to 1891,  and whilst I know it is possible the surnames are incorrectly transcribed, I have searched both Ancestry & Find my Past to no avail, so I think their page may be "lost".  Can anyone tell me if the missing pages story is true and whether or not the pages relate to this area of Middlesex, please?

kind regards

US Lookup Requests / New york marriage &/or births lookup please

George Patrick Henry Loder to Harriet N. (surname unknown).

They married c.1838 most probably in New York City.  Their children were also born there and it is possible the first two died in NY too as I can find no further records for them after the USA census for 1850.

Richard B. Loder c.1839
George A. Loder c.1842
Frank Loder - July 1846

If anyone has access to the BDM records and is willing to do a look-up, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Debra

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Highfill's Dictionary

If someone has access to this book could they look up the following entry for  Thomas Henry Ridgway and tell me if there is a reference as to source of his wife, Ann's father's name.  We believe her father to be John Loder, brother of Andrew and have found several discrepancies in the lineage of other family in this dictionary.

Highfill, Biographical Dictionary.  Vol. 12  Page 380

RIDGWAY – Thomas Edmund   d.c.1829 – actor, dancer,author
Arnold Hare, in The Theatre Royal Bath, shows “Ridgway” and “Mrs Ridgway (formerly Miss Loder)” performing at Bath in the 1804-5 season, But she, at least, could have done so through the whole season only if she had prematurely assumed the name.  For Felix Farley’s Bristol Journal  for 23 March 1805 reported that “Last week was married at Bradford [on Avon], Mr Ridgway, to Miss Ann Loder, both of our [ Bristol ] Theatre.” She was the daughter of the Bristol and sometime London musician Andrew Loder and member of an extensive family of performers.

If someone has access to the following newspaper article, could you please advise me if the reading is as I have been told or is it only the part shown in inverted commas?

I have information that states Hannah Fleetwood was christened on August 6,1750 at Wood Street, Saint Matthews, Friday Street, London on the same day as her brother John Fleetwood.

England & Wales Christenings show an entry for John but not Hannah so was wondering if any one has access to the images for this parish and could check to see if Hannah is listed with John and also, if shown, what John's father (Joseph Fleetwood) occupation was at the time.  I have a feeling the occupation won't be listed but if an address of some description is, then that would be appreciated too.

Kind regards

US Lookup Requests / Death/Burial Lookup please - Kings, Brooklyn, NY
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 08:19 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to locate the death of John Phillips Steains born 1854 in Lancashire, England.
He married an American lady, Mary Louise Green, in 1883 at Lancs and according to USA census they moved to New York in 1888.  A son, Arthur H. Steains was born c.1890 in USA but I couldn't find his birth in NY although I feel that is where he was born, or at sea perhaps.

John & his family appears in 1892 USA census living in Kings, Brooklyn.  His wife is widowed by the 1900 census (Living in Brooklyn).  so he died somewhere between 1892 and 1900.
I know his wife and sons (Edgar & Harold) are buried together at Greenwood Cemetery, NY (Lot 13920, section 170)
and another son, Claud also at the cemetery (lot 2960, section 155). (source - Greenwood Cemetery)

The youngest son, Arthur H. Steains died aged 3yrs on Feb 24, 1893 at Kings, New York (source Italian Genealogical Group)

My thinking is that Arthur is buried somewhere close to the family home and possibly with his father but not knowing the cemeteries or churches for the area I'm not sure where to start looking, so if anyone has access to New York records and could locate these deaths/burials I would be most appreciative.

Kind regards
Debra
