I have a postcard, written in pencil, that was sent to my Grandmother by someone who I think was possibly her cousin Edward Emerton (b. 1882 Hatfield). The postmark is Southampton, 5 Sep, (19)04 - it was a Monday, I checked. She would have been approx. 1 month short of her 16th birthday.
Part of the message says 'leaving Southampton today Monday, Ted'. Below this it says -
Corps Troops
1st Army Corps
Blue Force
on manoeuvers (sic)
In what I think is a different hand, and in red ink, someone has written at the top -
Sapper J Emerton
10919 A something? (possibly Troop) B B R E
Stanhope Lines
Aldershot, Hants
So, in 1904 when the card was written Edward (Ted?) would have been about 22, and although I haven't been able to identify a birth registration for an Edward there is a tantalising James Edward Emerton registered in the 4th Q of 1882 in the Hatfield reg district.
By using what I assume is a regimental number (10919) can anyone help me find out whether Sapper J Emerton and Edward Emerton are the same person? - or am I shooting for the moon?
Thanks in advance, and here's hoping,
Regards, B
