United States of America / Philadelphia Information
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 07:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wondering if someone can advise me a few things:

I am trying to somehow confirm the birth of a John Kilchrist, believed born Philadelphia, (noted on a census he is a british subject) about 1766.

Only reason we can think he is born in Philadelphia, and returns back to England is because his father was in the British Army.

So I know that this timeframe is before any official records for births, but is there ANY way of trying to find this information.

I was watching a show on SBS last night which was talking about the War and how in 1881 the British Army retreated. So I was wondering if there would be any records about how they would have retreated families back to England.

Thanks for any help

Somerset / Break in the Registers ???
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 04:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Was just wanting to find out if anyone knows why there is a Break in the Registers?

Pallot's Marriage Index (Over Stowey Marriages) - last entry is 1653 then it states there is a break in the registers until 1687 when the next register begins and it's marked A and bears endorsement date 5th April 1782.

Thanks

Somerset / Over Stowey Burials prior to 1813
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 03:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just a quick question, I have found a page which has Over Stowey burials, but only from 1813.  Just wondering if I was looking for a family that lived in Over Stowey prior to that where would I look for Burial records?

(I did try Nether Stowey, but didn't find them there.)

Thanks

Armagh / Death/Grave in Armagh - How to find?
« on: Friday 14 January 11 03:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am starting to make a bit of headway with this illusive family.

So wanting to know how I can find the death of a Margaret Harrold (Herold/Harold) nee Durkan/Durcan.

We believe it would have been between 1830ish (year last child was born)  - through to either 1847 or 1853 - we found he got remarried when he was 59. Problem is what year as we have 1 record stating he was 61 and another stating he was 67.

We have found a birth of a Margaret Durkan 17.6.1798 to parents John Durkan & Mary Leviston (Catholic). Then we believe the marriage of her to Thomas Harrold on 3.1.1818.

All the records so far just state Armagh, we have done a search of rootsireland, ancestry.com & family search - no death details. So is there a way that I can try to find some information?

I have tried to look for the family on Griffith's Valuations and can't find them either.

Thanks

Australia / VIC BDM can't find death - help please??
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 05:56 GMT (UK)  »
Well my illusive family are still being that!

We just got a message back from Vic BDM that they can't find a death record for Thomas Harold.

So this does make one wonder, did the person looking go outside the square, or did they just look for the parameters and that's that.  I've sent a email to them asking nicely what would have been done.

So has anybody else had this problem? Or any idea's as to where to go now?

Thanks

Australia / So how did they get here??
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to chase a Thomas & Margaret Harrold (Harold/Herald) and how they got to Victoria from Ireland.

Their daughter Isabella came out on the Neptune in 1841. But there is also another daughter Margaret and son William which we can't find.  The only record I can find is a Mr & Mrs Harrold in 1855 on the Asia (Unassisted Pax List), but I can't seem to find anything on the vessel when I google it.

So does anybody have any idea's as if I can find out if the Mr & Mrs Harrold are ours and how Margaret and William came out here?

Thanks

Australia / No Record of Death Certificate
« on: Monday 13 December 10 04:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem.  We have seen the grave for my 4 x g'grandfather, Thomas Harrold.

When we tried to apply for his death certificate, online it states that there is nothing that exists, have tried contacting VIC BDM, but they are very slow at answering their emails.

So does anybody know how we can find out information?  He is buried in Geelong Cemetery, we did find a Thomas Floyd who was buried there in the same year, we got that certificate just in case, but it's not him.

We are trying to find out when he came to Australia, but have been unable to find him on any immigration records. He has family buried with him. This family is proving very illusive.

Thanks

Ireland / Irish Immigration
« on: Wednesday 24 November 10 03:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Sorry to ask a silly question, but can somebody please explain what was the protocol for Irish families leaving Ireland, then ending up in UK, and then later end up in Australia.

I have a couple of families that are from Ireland, 1 we can see she has assisted passage from England arriving in Oz in 1841 (too early to be potato famine), she hasn't come with her family.  That's another mystery, we have seen their graves but can't find out how they got to Oz or even their death records. (This family is from Armagh - as it is written on his grave son of Armagh)

The other side of the family, again, believe they come from Kinsale and she's ended up in QLD where she got married and again can't find any information on how she got out here.

So when they left Ireland, was England just a stop over? Or are there records somewhere stating when a family/individual was leaving Ireland heading for Oz? Or did the family/individual generally leave Ireland, try working in England, and then move onto Oz?

Just thinking if I understand the process a bit better, it might lead me to where we can find information.

Thanks

Nedda

Cavan / Assistance please
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 09:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Whilst I am not new to the family tree research I find I always seem to hit a brickwall with Irish research and wondering if somebody can point me in the right direction.

I have 4 x g'grandad & grandma. On a recent trip to Victoria my Aunty found the gravestone of Thomas Harrold (we always had Harold). We believe that they came from Annagh as their daughter (3 x g'grandmother) is listed as being born there.  We believe his wife was a Margaret Derigan.

So we have now learnt that he was born 1794, and was buried in Geelong, VIC, AUS 15/8/1855. Margaret was born 1827 and was buried in Geelong, VIC 14/12/1883.

I can not find any information about them on ancestry.com, or find my past. I can't even find them on passenger records into Victoria.  I know the daughter was an assisted passenger as we found her coming on the Neptune arriving 29/3/1841.

Would be grateful for any assistance as how to find records for this illusive family.

Many thanks & Regards

Nedda
