The Common Room / Tip for birth record lookups
« on: Monday 22 August 05 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If you're having a problem finding a birth record after 1837, try searching the indexes with "male" or "female" instead of the person's first name. If the child's name had not been chosen on the day of registration, this is what was entered into the register.

In the indexes available at http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/, these entries come after all of the "named" births--I saw them by chance when looking for a "Richard"--and found what I believe is his birth, a "male" in the right place at the right time (no Richard).

Completed Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Burial lookup please, Welford Rd
« on: Tuesday 16 August 05 22:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is there any way of finding exactly where in Welford Rd. Cemetary someone is buried (i.e., other than Thomas Cook etc.)  I would like to ask one of my sisters to go and try to find the grave and take a photo.

I'm looking for the grave of John Bonnett North aka John Bonnett. He was buried in Welford Road Cemetery in December, 1863, in consecrated ground. In the burial index and on his second marriage certificate his name includes the "North", on all other documents, it is just John Bonnett.

Any pointers to the right area or plot would be most welcome!

Thank you :-)

Completed Leicestershire Lookup Requests / 1861 census, Belvoir... royalty?
« on: Monday 15 August 05 04:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I found two of my half-great-granduncles, Nathan and Henry Toon(e) of Syston, in the 1861 census. They were part of the Leicestershire Militia Band and spent the night at the Belvoir Inn in the grounds of Belvoir Castle. The bandmaster spent the night in the castle itself, together with various people of importance including the Lord Lieutenant, his daughter, an MP and his wife and several "esquires". The census return has been transcribed here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~framland/framland/bev1861a.htm

There is a "maid of honour to Her Majesty the Queen" listed as one of the castle occupants... so that made me wonder, are members of the Royal Family listed in the census?

I searched the census for "queen of england"  but no luck.   ;)

Does anyone know where Queen Victoria and the Royal Family were on the night of the 1861 census? Were the band there to play to them?

I can find no trace of either Nathan or Henry after this... maybe they went off to South Africa or India, I must keep looking.

Leicestershire / How can I find apprenticeship records?
« on: Friday 05 August 05 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Please does anyone know where I might start looking for apprenticeship records? My great-great-great grandfather, John Bonnett, was a blacksmith (and so were John's son Emmanuel, who was a "striker"--the guy who used the big hammer in the forge--and later, John's step-son Thomas).

John was born in about 1800 in Seagrave, Leicestershire, and may have been illegitimate and using the surname of North as a child (I still have to confirm this--he was "Bonnett" at the time of his first marriage).  He married in Elizabeth Lindsey in Barrow upon Soar in 1824, and after that I have lots of information about his life and offspring.

I was thinking that if I could find information about how John learned his blacksmithing trade, it would help fill in the details about his early life.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Best regards,

Alison

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Birth/baptism lookup please--Seagrave
« on: Wednesday 03 August 05 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi    :)

Please could you help me with a lookup for the birth of a John (Bonnett) North, in Seagrave, about 1800?  My John may have been illegitimate, hence the difficulty in finding his parents--I just found the index for his second marriage, in which his name is listed John Bonnett North. All other records are "John Bonnett".

Thank you!!   :)

Hi, here's another one (guess who's using GenSmarts!)

I have searched all the registers for this one--it was after 1837, so there should be a registration somewhere!--but no luck so far.

I'm looking for the marriage of John Gask and Rosanna Bennett, probably in the later part of 1851, in Leicester or Belgrave.

Thank you!!!!!!  :-)

Hi,

Please does anyone have information on the marriage of a John Bennett and Ann, about 1825, in Leicester? Their oldest child (at least, of those that I've found so far) was born in 1827 and christened at St. Mary de Castro.

Thank you!!!

Hi,

I'm looking for information on the first marriage of James Sarson of Queniborough. He was born in about 1827, and by 1871 was widowed, with two children: John, born about 1854, and Mary, born about 1856.

He later remarried, to Mary Riley, who was born in Queniborough about 1839--and the marriage was probably in the last quarter of 1872. So far I've found three children from this second marriage: Sarah and Fanny, both born around 1873, and Amelia, born about 1880.

I haven't been able to find an index record for James' first marriage, nor for the death of Mary, his second wife (who seems to have disappeared from 1881 onwards!)

All suggestions gratefully received...

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Marriage of James Hughes and Ann
« on: Monday 28 March 05 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for information on the marriage of James Hughes, born about 1801 in Llanycefn, and Ann (surname unknown), born about 1791 in Carew.  The couple later lived in St Issell's parish, Pembrokeshire.

I believe that their first child, Elizabeth, was born in about 1826, but don't know the location.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Best regards,

Alison
