Both of these grandparents died when my mum was a teenager and this is the only photograph I have of my grandfather. The contrast is very poor and it needs a good clean.

I would really appreciate any improvements that can be made by the talented restorers. Thank you.

Worcestershire / Photographs of pubs in and around Redditch dated before 1910
« on: Sunday 04 April 10 12:14 BST (UK)  »
I have some postcard photographs of several Public Houses in the Redditch area. If anyone has an interest in any of these please let me know. These are the inscriptions on the back of the cards.

The Woodland Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Redditch, circa 1910. The pub is still there today.

The Rose & Crown, Heathfield Road, Webheath, Redditch, circa 1900. The pub was rebuilt in the 1980s

The Village Inn, Beoley, circa 1905. The pub is still there today and was once a popular watering hole for passing cyclists.

The Tea Cannister, Unicorn Hill (Redditch), circa 1890. Located on the site of what would become The Unicorn; this was one of the town's oldest pubs and took its name from a tea shop in the same building.

The White Lion, Evesham Road, Astwood Bank, circa 1910 when Daniel Dibble was the licensee.

The Brook Inn, Elcotts Brook, Callow Hill, circa 1905.

I have a set of 12 postcards mostly dated around late 1800s/early 1900s. They show a variety of Public Houses in and around Redditch, Worcestershire. On the back it has

Redditch Advertiser
Alcester Chronicle

It also says the pictures were kindly supplied by a member of Redditch Pictorial History Society.

There is nothing on the back to indicate copyright. There are no dates to indicate when published. They have been passed on to me by a relative who was given them by a third party.

My question is, can these postcards be shared with others on rootschat who have an interest in a particular public house? I would gladly share them if there is no breach of copyright involved?

Can anyone advise me please?

Shropshire Lookup Requests / STEPHAN/NICKLESS Broseley PR Baptism lookups please
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to CaroleW for her help in finding these birth registrations.

Hannah Stephan, Sep qtr 1842 Madeley  18  80

Edward Stephan Nickless, March qtr 1847 Madeley  18  92

George Stephan Nickless, September qtr 1844 Madeley  18  92

Peter Nickless, December qtr 1849 Madeley 18  85

I believe these birth registrations are all for siblings, children of Peter Stephan. The family lived in Broseley Shropshire (Madeley reg dist)

Is anyone out there able to look up these baptisms in Broseley Parish Registers please? I would like to find out if they all had the same mother. It looks as though these children were born before Peter married their mother in 1850.

Would be very grateful for some help with this.
Thank you

Monaghan / Location of Radeerpark. Cavan/Monaghan?
« on: Friday 19 March 10 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a birth reg for my grandmother. I know that the family lived in County Monaghan from 1900, but I believe they moved there from elsewhere and some of the family may have been born in County Cavan.

Three of my grandmother's sisters emigrated to the USA. I have information about births for 2 of them (1870s/80s) from Killeevan Parish records. Killeevan is in County Monaghan. Apparently the Killeevan registers are totally faded in places and there is no sign of their 4 siblings. One of the sisters who emigrated and is also found in Parish records named Cootehill (County Cavan) as her place of birth. In the parish baptism records for her it says the family are from Radiarpark/Radierpark/Radeerpark/Rawdeerpark (not sure of the spelling) Does anyone have any idea where this place is located?

The Common Room / Was great great grandma buried in the garden?
« on: Wednesday 17 March 10 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find out what happened to my g g grandmother after the 1861 census. In 1851 she was with her husband and 6 children. Her husband had a well paid occupation so times shouldn't have been too hard for them. Her husband died the following year, so I'm sure this would have been a very difficult time for the family.Mary had moved (same town) by 1861 and 3 of her sons were with her, aged 10, 12 and 19. Then Mary disappears!

I have tracked all 6 of her offspring. In 1871 most of them were still living in the same town - most had their own growing families. No sign anywhere of Mary. I used FreeBMD to look for death registrations with no luck. Perhaps she remarried, but couldn't find anything here either. I even went through all the death and marriage records for MARY no surname for the following 10 year period.

This was about 3 years ago and it still bothers me that I don't know what happened to her. She was a year or two past 40 in 1861 (39 in the census!) Recently I have been visiting the Family Records Centre which covers the area she lived in. I was sure I would find a burial record for her (or perhaps a 2nd marriage) In spite of returning many times and going through reel after reel of microfilm for any parish in the area I have been unable to find anything. Her parents burials are there and her husbands but I still can't find Mary!

I know mistakes/ommissions occur but it seems strange that there's nothing in registrations OR Parish registers. Has anyone else had a similar experience? If the family couldn't afford a burial does anyone know what would happen?

The Common Room / Could Agatha be Agnes?
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 15:51 GMT (UK)  »
In Parish registers my g g grandmother's parents are named as Thomas Davis and Agnes.

There is a marriage for Thomas Davis and Agnes Bennet in 1803, followed by baptism entries for 10 children between 1805 and 1823. All baptisms took place in the same Parish and state Agnes as mother's name.

On the 1841 census I have Thomas Davis and Agatha with 2 of the children baptised as daughters of Thomas & Agnes.

On the 1851 census Thomas and Agatha again this time with a grandaughter.

I have looked for another marriage for Thomas to see if he could have married again, but cannot find anything.

Agatha died first and I have her certificate (1852) which states wife of Thomas Davis, and gives known occupation for Thomas.

I have wondered for some time if Agnes and Agatha could be the same person. Then when looking at records for a daughter of Thomas & Agnes eldest son I found a birth reg for Sarah Agnes, but her marriage reg is for Sarah Agatha.

Do you think Agnes and Agatha could be the same person?

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Broseley/Madeley Another marriage? Surname STEPHAN
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
Peter Stephan (Surname sometimes written as Stephen/Stephon) originally from Staffordshire, is living in Broseley, Shropshire on all censuses 1841-1871. I presume that he spent all of his adult life there.

There is a marriage for him at St Leonard Broseley in 1818, spouse Sarah Shenton. This is followed by the births of 3 children to Peter and Sarah Stephan between 1819 and 1824.

In 1850, Sep qtr, there's a marriage registration for Peter Stephan to Susanna Bradley, Madeley district. As censuses say that Susanna was born in Madeley, the marriage could have been at Broseley or Madeley (Madeley is registration district for Broseley)

On the 1851 census Peter and Susanna are in Broseley with 4 children, all born Broseley
Hannah, daur, born c1842 - Probably registered Madeley Sep 1842
George, son, born c1845
Edward, son, born c1846
Peter, son, born c1849

I can't find suitable birth registrations for the 3 boys.

As Peter and Susanna have only been married a few months, I am wondering if there was another marriage for Peter, perhaps about 1841/2. If this 2nd wife died during the late 1840s she would not show as Mrs Stephan on any census records.

If anyone has access to records for Broseley/Madeley please could you check for a marriage for Peter during the 1840s and or baptism records for the 4 children mentioned above. Perhaps this will give a clue as to who their mother was.

Thank you
Angela

There is some damage to this photograph, so please can some kind person do a repair and clean. If anyone would like to have a go at colouring she has dark brown hair and eyes. Apparently the dress was white with black edging on the collar so not much colour required!

Thank you
Angela
