I am looking for Herbert Stuart WOLFE b. 1892 in Liverpool, England.
He was a Purser on several Transatlantic ships.

I know that he was in in Wellington, New Zealand in October 1935 (he sent a breif message to his mother) and I wonder if he sailed on the Remuera crossing?

The ship departed London Thurs 22 August 1935, arrived Auckland Sat 28 September 1935. I understand that the NZ Archives reference is: Wellington Ref: SS1/187

Would anyone be able to check the passenger lists for this crossing for me?

Ireland / Missing Marriage - Mary Ann FITZELL & ? O'DONNELL
« on: Friday 15 August 08 14:02 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help - it's a long shot!

I am trying to find a record to confirm the date/place of the marriage of
Mary Ann FITZELL with ? O'DONNELL.

She was likely Catholic. She remarried young (age 26) in 1856 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool and her 2nd marriage certificate states she is a widow.
Various census reports show her birthplace as  Tarbert, Ireland.

She had several children with her 2nd husband, but I suspect that her first daughter Elizabeth, born c1849 in Cork, may actually have been the daughter of her first husband ? O'DONNELL.

If anyone can help, I'd love any information.

Thanks in advance!

Ireland / Alice Watkins WALMSLEY - help find her!
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace anything about Alice Watkins WALMSLEY, and her ancestors.

She was born c1859 in Ireland (I do not know which County).
I believe her father was James Fitzallen WALMSLEY, also born Ireland. It is possible she had sisters, Francis and Charlotte.

She was resident in Chester by 1881 census, and worked as a post office telegraphist in Lioverpool. She married Alfred John WOLFE in November 1884 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. She went on to live in this area until her death in 1935.

Any help most gratefully received!!

From 1871 to 1919 I have references to this family member being in the civil Service, specifically within the post office.

His hame was Alfred John WOLFE (born 1858 Liverpool; died 1938 Liverpool).
He lived in Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

In the 1871 and 1881 census he is listed as civil service; in 1891 census he is a post office telegraphist (as was his wife Alice Watkins Walmsley). In May 1919, his son's marriage certificate lists him as a Postal Superintendent.

I would LOVE to find any information about Alfred, his career, or that of his wife Alice...can anyone help?!

World War One / WW1 - HMS Royal Oak - Photo ID and Medal Roll
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 15:13 BST (UK)  »
Would love some help!  :)

These pictures show Herbert Stuart WOLFE and crew mates in MArch 1917. From enlarging the image, it looks to me like the ship's plate and hat emblem say 'HMS Royal Oak'. The RCD on Herbert's shoulder is the Royal Canadian Dragoons.

According to my research the ship was involved in the Grand Fleet at the BAttle of Jutland. (Would this fit with a theatre of war code 'Balkans' code...?)

I have tried to look up his name on the medal roll, but the closest I could find was a listing for 'Herbt H Wolfe'. Presume it would be easy to get a middle name initial wrong?!
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=1&gsfn=herbt+&gsln=wolfe&=&f16=&f14=&gskw=&prox=1&db=medalrolls&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=39&fh=0&recid=4764444&recoff=1+2+3

I cannot get to Kew Archives, is there anyone who can access the information on this record for me to check?

Also, I had heard that he had joined the Royal Canadian Dragoons in 1914, and yet this medal roll lists him as being in the Liverpool Regiment (highly likely as he lived in the city before and after the war). Was there any connection between the two?!

Any help very gratefully received!

Thanks,
Susie

Europe / Passenger List: Scottish citizens returning from US (c1880)
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 10:08 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandparents travelled from Glasgow to New York on S/S 'Bolivia' in September 1875.

However, they then returned to Scotland at some point between c1876-1881, as they are shown back in Aberdeen on the 1881 Scotland census.

I am looking to trace details of their return journey from US-Scotland (presumably New York to Glasgow route).

Their names were:
Robert Mearns, b c1849
Helen Mearns, b c1851
Helen Mearns, b c1873
Mary Jane Mearns, b c1874
Elizabeth Alexander Mearns, b c1876

Any help gratefully received!
Susie
