Armed Forces / 78th Foot Queens regiment St Helena
« on: Thursday 16 August 18 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Been searching for years for evidence of Benjamin Stark being in the St Helena Regiment and have found some documents relating to him. Could anyone tell me what 'out pension' is please? He is listed as being out pension of 6d on 24.06.1851, and it commenced on 16.07.1851. Unfortunately he is listed as deceased on 29.07.1851 but no reason give. His pension was paid, presumably to his widow until 17.07.1853.  I would love to know what the cause of his death was and how his family returned home as his wife was possibly pregnant at the time. Still one step at a time even if each step takes 10 years! Regards

My grandfather Benjamin Holdsworth Stark served in the West Yorkshire Regiment and fought at Arras, Oppy Wood and Gavrelle. His record was one of those destroyed in the fire in world war 2. Can anyone tell me where the prisoner of war camp Breslau was situated as I can't seem to find it.

« on: Sunday 26 February 17 02:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching Benjamin Stark who joined the St Helena Regiment in 1841/1842, There is a newspaper article asking for recruits to enlist in a regiment drawn up in Manchester during these years. Does anyone have access to the archives of newspapers in the north of England at this time and could shed light on this please?

South Africa / st Helena, South Africa Church Records
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 00:43 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any ideas re the whereabouts of  church records of birth and deaths are held. I have an ancestor who was on St Helena with the St Helena Regiment in 1842 and have found from a search of the island archives a Thomas Holdsworth Stark, but no mention of any of his siblings of whom 3 were also born on St Helena between 1842 and 1852.  His mother was recorded as a widow on the 1861 census, but I cannot find a notice of death for her husband. Thomas was also not recorded on the 1861 census.  The fathers name is Benjamin, mothers Harriet and siblings Sara, Jane, and Benjamin. Hope someone out there has a suggestion as this brick wall is haunting me!

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Charles Leavock drowned Canada 1909
« on: Monday 04 August 08 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Am researching a family called Leavock and hit partial brick wall re mother Maria so trying another angle.  Her son Charles was born 1861 Leeds England and appears on 1861, 1871, 1881 censuses in Leeds.  In 1886 he married Annie Simmons in Chorlton, Lancashire.  In 1901 he is listed at Esquimax Vancouver as a prospector on the Canadian census. In 1904 he married Hannah Johnson in Leeds and they had two daughters.  He returned to Canada - why?- and is listed on the British Columbia Death Index for 1909.  Can anyone turn up any info please on the Canadian censuses, death index, newspapers, shipping etc.  I understand that he was drowned whilst shooting some rapids on Vancouver Island.  any help will be much appreciated anne

Yorkshire (West Riding) / benjamin holdswoth stark
« on: Thursday 12 June 08 02:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where the Holdsworth part comes from in my gfathers name. It first appears in a child born on St Helena  named Thomas Holdsworth Stark.  I have found another Benjamin Holdsworth Stark born 22.07.1920   to George Thomas Stark and Annie ( nee McLeod.) I believe that George Thomas was my gt uncle but we have lost contact with his family.  I believe Benjamin died in August 1985.  Does anyone have any info on this family so that I can find out if they know where the name came from?
