Offaly (Kings) / BMD records for Birr, co Offaly
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 08:26 BST (UK)  »
I recently received advise from Irish Midlands ancestry that
church records for Birr begin in 1838.
My great great grandfather William Roe was born there
in 1816.
Any advice of helping me to trace his family would be
welcome.

The Common Room / Passage to South Africa
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 09:24 BST (UK)  »
I know I was taken to South Africa as a baby after my birth in June 1934
with my Mother Frances Rose Stevens b 1911.
I have searched shipping records but cannot locate a departure.
I am sure flying was not an option in those days.
Does anyone know if a departure from a French Med. port could
be an option? And are there any records that can be accessed?

I have discovered via Army records that my Great great grandfather was born
in Birr, Parsonstown, Kings country in 1816 and joined the 22nd. regiment of foot
at Birr Barracks in 1833. Occupation shoemaker.
What can I do now to go back in time from here?

Ireland / William Roe
« on: Friday 26 June 09 08:59 BST (UK)  »
As a result of some excellent research by Richard Moles.com I am now in possession of my Great great grandfather's
army records, and finally his place of birth, which had so far eluded me.  I learn he was born at Parsonstown, Kings County in 1816, now known as   Birr, country Offaly.
He is shown to have enlisted in the 22nd. regiment at the Birr barracks on 5th. Sept. 1833. His occupation was given
as shoemaker. I know only his father's name was also William.
Can anyone advise how I might now proceed to track the family?

Dublin / Roe-Woods marriage, Dublin
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 07:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am still trying to locate a marriage for my Great great grandparents prior to embarking for India from Gravesend(Jan 1841)
with the Cheshire regiment - based in Dublin until Dec 1840

So I would expect a marriage in 1840  hopefully in Dublin. Their first child was born in India in 1841

William Roe  b. 1816

Catherine Woods b. 1821

I have checked for a UK marriage with no result.

I know Ireland is not easy but any help would be most appreciated.

The Common Room / Shipping records France to South Africa
« on: Monday 23 March 09 08:42 GMT (UK)  »
I was taken to Cape Town South Africa after my birth in London 4.635 by my Mother Frances Rose Stevens.
The problem is I can't find any shipping record from the UK. or back from SA to the UK before 1937.
I am just wondering if the trip was from a Mediterranean port  maybe Marseilles the most likely. Are any records possible?
Air travel would not seem likely in those days?
Does anone have any suggestions.
