London and Middlesex / St James Workhouse Westminster
« on: Wednesday 18 November 20 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
My maternal great-grandfather was in the St James Workhouse, Westminster from 1865-72 and he received an apprenticeship courtesy of a bequest from a wealthy widow, Mrs Ann Newton. It would be nice to recognise the generosity of Ann Newton in my report writing, does anybody have any information as to who she was? How large the bequest was and how many boys benefited?

London and Middlesex / Battersea Churches
« on: Wednesday 05 October 16 22:01 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my great-grandfather Samuel Perry who lived in Battersea from about 1860 to 1905. I know that in 1879 he was living at 32 Bolingbroke Road, Church Rd, Battersea. Samuel spent time in the workhouse after being found abandoned, on these records his denomination is CofE yet he married in 1885 with an Independent ceremony (Harley Street Chapel, Bow). I want to try and work out where he may have worshipped but have no idea where to start.

It is clear Samuel has a deep personal faith and he threw himself into community work. I know from a letter of his to the workhouse that he became a Sunday school teacher and his church started a Band of Hope (now Hope Uk), in which he held three or four positions of responsibility.

Can anybody share some advice on Battersea churches during this period or where the best place is for me to find further information?

Unwanted Birth, Marriage, Death Certs N to S / Perry Family Interest
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 15:01 BST (UK)  »
I have in my possession two birth certificates for Samuel Perry. Ordered from the GRO to find my great grandfather but neither of them are a match. It would be a shame to bin them as they are somebodies ancestor.

1. Samuel Perry born 1851, Strand, parents are Joseph and Ann (Lumley)

2. Samuel Perry born 1851, Strand, parents are Joseph and Harriet (King)

I am happy to send a scanned copy or post you the original.

The Common Room / Duplicated Birth Index
« on: Friday 23 September 16 19:45 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to narrow down my search for a Samuel Perry in the birth index approx 1854-58. I am confused as to why in Dec 1857 there are four entries with the same name and same location. Does anybody have a possible explanation as to why this would be?

On closer inspection it appears it is two entries but each is duplicated.

Does anyone know where the fire switchboard was located in Horsham during WW2? I had heard it was somewhere along the brighton road.

Sussex / Forest Hospital, Roffey
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping somebody may be able to point me in the right direction regarding Forest Hospital, Roffey, Horsham. I understand during WW2 it was used as a field hospital for wounded canadian soldiers. My grandmother used to visit the premises, perhaps as a volunteer, and came into the possession of several german medals. I can find no record of it being a POW camp, so I am thinking perhaps there was a downed luftwaffe pilot in the vicinity that spent a period in the hospital? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I was wondering if there is any person happy to do some further research on my McGrath line from Cork? If so how much it would cost.

Could someone tell me if it is possible to view an up to date death index? I'm looking for a possible death between 2009-10.
