Other Countries / TRINIDAD - Any online resources?
« on: Monday 03 August 15 19:13 BST (UK)  »
I have a family mystery that I am trying to solve. My 2 x Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Bradfield emigrated to Trinidad sometime between 1901 and 1915 to be with her brother Arthur Bradfield who had moved out at the turn of the century.

She was there when her daughter was married at Port of Spain Cathedral in 1917, by which time she herself had married Jack Robinson Palmer, an analytical chemist possibly in the sugar cane business. I would love to know the details of her wedding or her time in Trinidad. All I know is that she lived in Cipriani Boulevard in the Port of Spain.

Is there any way I can find out about her life in Trinidad or any record of her life? I have found some of the ships records for Mary and Arthur but that is all.

Many thanks, Jo  :)

Can anyone help? I have a death certificate for Jesse Alfred Noble Smee, 23 January 1941. His usual place of residence was Royal Soldiers Home, Colinton Road, Edinburgh. I have not had much luck googling this place. Does anyone know if it has a different name or if there are any records anywhere which would tell me more about it? I am rying to find out how Jesse ended up here.

Many thanks in advance  :)

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Tisbury Marriages - DALTON/DOLTON
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 08:02 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help? I am trying to track down extra details about two marriages that I think took place in Tisbury.

William Tabor m Ann Dolton
06 Oct 1761 Tisbury

John Danells m Ann Dolton
16 May 1780 Otterbourne, Hampshire or Tisbury
William Tabor, bondsman

I am researching the Danells family and am finding it very difficult to get back to the next generation. I suspect that William Tabor from the first marriage was marrying Ann Dolton, widow, mother of Ann Dolton who married John, so wondered if the original record has any additional details that might prove or disprove this idea. That might explain why he and not Ann's father were the bondsman on her marriage.

I think that these may be Catholic families, which is making the search harder. I have not been able to find any baptism for Ann or any other Daltons/Doltons in Tisbury or Wardour. Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Jo

Suffolk / DANIEL Family - Acton, Suffolk
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 09:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can help. I am researching the Daniel/Dannel/Danels family in Hampshire and have seen a reference to Acton Place, Suffolk in connection with them.

I have a Charles Danell that is apparently from Acton b 1720 died 1800 in Winchester, Hampshire. I understand that the Daniel family in Acton were recuscants and suffered much persecution over the years.  I have found a reference online to Charles and his wife Mary (possibly nee Standish) the dates do not seem to fit but I am unable to find any records to verify the names or dates.

I am unable to find many current websites that have any information about Acton - Cosford Database doesn't seem to be working. Although I have seen this one http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/acton.html which makes reference to the family and this one http://www.prattens.co.uk/FAMILIES/DANIEL/NOTES.HTML which has thrown up more questions!

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to find Catholic records for Acton? Or even any other information that might help?

Many thanks

Jo

Armed Forces / Royal Tank Corps - Any advice?
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
According to my Nan, my grandfather was in the Royal Tank Corps in the 1920s. She knows no more information than that, as it was before they met that he served. He never talked about it and there are no photos of him in uniform. He was born in 1906, so he didn't serve during WWI, which is when all the online Army records seem to relate to.

I would like to try and find out more about his time there, does anyone know if there are any resources available online? If I knew more details then I could apply to the MOD for his records. I would really appreciate any help.

The Common Room / Boob jobs - Please help!
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 23:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hopefully I have got your attention with the subject of this topic!  ;)

In the course of my research I have come across one family member who is said to have a had an elective double mastectomy because she couldn't cope with going through puberty. I don't know when the operation was carried out, but the relative in question lived between 1895-1965 approx.

I would like to find out more about this, was it something that was often done? Would she have had to have had counselling first? Where would she have gone for the operation. I do not seem to be able to find anything on google, probably because I don't know what I should be typing in. Most results seem to be related to cancer, whereas this was definitely not the case here.

Does anyone have any ideas of where I can start looking? Many thanks in advance!

Family History Beginners Board / Family History Books - Any good ones?
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 00:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have read through a number of threads about reference books to help start writing your family history. However what I am after is any recommendations of books or websites that people have actually published about their own families.

I have the Deborah Cass book on 'Writing your family history' and felt her own examples she gave were really inspiring for thinking about my own family and how I would write up my stories. The only problem was that there were not enough examples in her book and she doesn't actually seemed to have published her research anywhere. Has anyone got any suggestions as to suitable reading material?

Many thanks

Is there anyone who could look up marriage details for me for a wedding that appears on the new Family Search Pilot.

Thomas Gaiger and Fanny Loveland are the couple in question.  The date of the wedding is 04 July 1882 and the location is simply given as Wimbledon, which is not very helpful as I guess there was probably more than one church in Wimbledon at this time!  The parents are given as James Gaiger and Thomas Loveland.  I had thought Thomas' father was George Gaiger, so if someone could check the father's name and occupation I would really appreciate it!
