Europe / Portugal: Tracing Portuguese family history - where do I start?
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 09:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping my friend and her daughter start out on their family tree and would like to know where to start when it comes to Portuguese records.  Is there any online information?  I really have no idea where to start, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou

Ross & Cromarty / Dingwall burials
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 12:11 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the burial place of Henry Cockburn who died 16.10.1959.   At the time of his death, he was living in Dingwall and I guess he was probably buried there.

Could anyone out there help me with this one?  I'd be very grateful for any help

Cumberland Completed Lookups / Re: Look up for Wreay - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi Silvercloud

Would you be so kind to have a look for any Ruddick baptisms or burials at Wreay during the 1830s.

From IGI, I have one baptism for George Ruddick on 07.02.1836 - I'd br grateful to know if there is anymore information regarding his parents in the entry.

I hope you can help - I live in Spain and access to records is restricted to my infrequent trips to the UK

Many thanks

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Marriage - Edward Ruddick and Margaret
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 08:08 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is going to Carlisle Record Office (or library, if they have the relevant parish records) would they be able to do a look-up for me?

I am trying to find a marriage for Edward Ruddick and Margaret.  From census records, they were both born c1806 in Dalston, Cumberland (although I have not found a baptism as yet for Edward) and their first child was born c1829 in Burgh by Sands.  I am guessing that their marriage took place in Dalston sometime around 1826-1829.

I would greatly appreciate any help with breaking down this brick wall, particularly Margaret's maiden name or any clues as to the parents of Edward.

Thanks

claire

(Thread title edited - was George Ruddick and margaret, now Edward Ruddick and Margaret)

Wigtownshire / Dunragit - Robert Hill Cockburn
« on: Monday 02 March 09 06:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a bit more information regarding the death of Robert Hill Cockburn (d.  08.03.1927).  I have his death entry and RCE from SP and he drowned in the Saw Mill Dam in the grounds of Dunragit House, where he was the gardener.

I was wondering if it was likely that the incident itself and subsequent inquest would have been covered in the local newspaper.  Also, where is he likely to be buried?

If anyone can point me in the right direction, or even have a look for me while doing some of their own research, I'd be very grateful.

Cumberland / Did Walter Nixon and Ann get married?
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 07:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage for Walter Nixon and his wife Ann in about 1850.  They both were from the Brampton area and so far all my efforts have drawn a blank (GRO Index, IGI).  According to the 1851 census (HO107/2427/124/39) they were already married and I believe that their first child was born later that year.  I have previously posted  on the Scotland General board

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,356064.0.html

as a public A******* tree has them listed as marrying in Gretna Green, but there are no contact details so I can't check with them.   I am hoping that perhaps a few more eyes will see it here and be able to help.  Perhaps there is something out there that has been overlooked.

Thanks

Scotland / Records for irregular marriages
« on: Monday 26 January 09 08:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage record for Walter Nixon and his wife Ann (no surname at the moment).  They were both from the Brampton area, but I can't find a marriage record for them on the BMD index.  I decided to search A******* trees and found one that has Walter marrying Ann Hetherington at Gretna Green, but no dates and no contact info for the tree owner.

Do records for Gretna Green irregular marriages exist and are they accessible?  I realise this may be a long shot, and I haven't ruled out the possiblility that there was no marriage at all.

I'd appreciate any guidance, and apologise if this has already been answered elsewhere.  Also, I understand the differences between English and Scottish marriage laws, it's just the records I'm interested in, if there are any.

Thanks

Cumberland Lookup Requests / LAW family Longtown
« on: Friday 23 January 09 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to baptism records for the Longtown area, I hope they can help.

I would like to find baptisms for the children of John Law and Margaret Nixon.  They were married in 1887 at Scaleby Church, but their children were probably christened in Arthuret church.  The names given to me by my grandmother are Dora or Dorothy, Annie, Bessie, Ethel and Ellen Mary.  I have a birth date for Ellen Mary in 1897, the others could have been born any time between the marriage date (or slightly before) and 1910.

I greatly appreciate any help with this - I am trying to establish a few basic facts before shelling out for any more certificates.   I really only have the above to go on at the moment.  If I think of anything else relevant I'll post it.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Medal found in a garden near Lockerbie
« on: Monday 17 November 08 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have started a thread about this on the Scotland board.

http://info.itvlocal.com/medal.shtml

I just heard this story on local Border news about a medal which has been found in a garden near Lockerbie.  Knowing how much Rootschatters like a challenge, i thought I'd let you all know about it.  If it has been posted before, apologies.

If anyone can shed any light on it, they can contact Border TV (details on the link above), obviously let us know too!

Claire
