Other Countries / Sugar Plantations in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica in 1820's
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 16:33 BST (UK)  »
I believe my Jamaican ancestors belonged to a slave owner named William Reckord.  He had a plantation called Westlands Estate in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica in the 1820's.  I've done quite an extensive search online and cant find any info on Mr Reckord or his estate.  Would anyone happen to know anything about him or his estate - eg was he English.  All help much appreciated.

Other Countries / How many more Generations before I can expect to find Slaves
« on: Monday 06 October 14 10:09 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my Father's Jamaican side of the family for the past 7 years and am not getting very far.  I think I have just found the death records for his Grandmother (my Gt Grandmother).  If they are correct she was born in St Elizabeth in 1879.  Can anyone tell me how many more generations further back can I expect to go before I find slaves.  I dont know anything about Jamaican history, when slavery was abolished etc, and all help will be much appreciated.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Family Finder DNA Test
« on: Thursday 11 September 14 18:58 BST (UK)  »
I should like to ask if anyone has done the family finder (autosomal) dna test with Family Finder.  In May 2013 I did the mitochondrial test and got the results back.  On 28th August this year I decided I wanted to know what my overall ethnicity was and was advised by them to do the Family Finder test.  I duly paid for this.  I expected to wait 4 weeks for the kit.  Imagine my surprise when today I receive an email to say that my test is complete and gives me a list of matches.  Now at the risk of sounding stupid, I should like to ask how have they done this when I have had no test kit.  Have they extracted data from my mitochondrial test.  All ideas greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Help with a Marriage Look-Up for Claribel Walker
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 21:14 BST (UK)  »
I need some help please with a marriage look up for Claribel Walker.  She was born in Halton, Leeds in 1879.  She was one of several children of John Walker and Theresa Atkinson.  The latest I have her is in the 1901 census when she is aged 21 and at home with her parents and sister Martha.  Also there is Percival Gilfin, aged 34, who was born in Ewhurst, Sussex.

I have found several trees on A******y with her on them which say that she is married to Percival Thomas Reed Gilfin, but for the life of me I cannot find this for myself.  I have looked on A******y and FindMyPast to no avail.  I have searched for Percival's death and found that and probate details, which gives Clara Gilfin as his widow, so they must have married, but the question is where and when!!!  I also know that Claribel (Clara) died in Selby in 1962.  All help much appreciated to help me solve this mystery before I go mad.

Canada / Whatever Happened to Jack Walker
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what happened to my 1st cousin once removed, Jack Walker.  He was born in Garforth, Leeds in 1916.  I have reason to believe that he married a Delphina Cole in 1940 and they had a son John born in 1943.  It looks as though they emigrated to Canada in 1952.  They sailed on the ship Scythia on 17th May 1952 from Southampton and docked in Quebec.  The ships manifest gives his occupation as Tailors Cutter and Delphina is listed as housewife.

The manifest gives no address for them in Canada, only Quebec.  My question is how can I found out just where they settled in Canada.  As you will appreciate the name Jack Walker is very common.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Census and Resource Discussion / Problems with Ancestry
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if I'm allowed to put this here, but can I ask if anyone is having trouble with A******y at the moment.  I ask because whatever I try to look at, parish registers, census etc, I don't get the image on screen.  Anyone else have this problem I wonder.

Family History Beginners Board / Where was Mary Beacroft Born
« on: Monday 25 November 13 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone will be able to help me get a generation further back from my 3 x Gt Grandmother, Mary Bea(ee)croft.  According to the 1861 census she was born in, what looks like to me, Hipstone in Yorkshire.  I have lived in Yorkshire all my life and have never heard of it.  A google search comes up with nothing either.  The only place I can think of that is remotely like it is Skipton.  There is an Ipsden (which could sound like it) but that is in Berkshire.  I should be grateful to know what anyone thinks.  You will have to bear with me as I am not very technicalminded, but I will try and attach the census.

Family History Beginners Board / Adoption
« on: Monday 07 October 13 12:43 BST (UK)  »
This might sound like a silly question, but I should like to ask if you can be adopted twice?  If you were adopted at a couple of weeks old by a couple and then the husband died and a couple of years after your adoptive mother married again, could the new husband adopt you?

Also, what name would appear on your birth certificate, the name you were born with or your adopted name?

Thanks a lot.

Family History Beginners Board / Help please in finding death records for Gt Uncle James
« on: Wednesday 11 September 13 16:20 BST (UK)  »
James Sinnott Dakin was born in Leeds October qtr 1899.  Parents were Hannah Maria Dakin and James Sinnott.  In 1911 census he is lodging with his mother and sisters at Harvey Street, Barnsley.

I'm having difficulty finding a death for James.  I sent for a death certificate which seems to have the right dates on it.  It gives his name as James Sennett Dakin and he died on 19 December 1948 aged 48.  It says that James was a male nurse and lived in Clitheroe and died in Leeds General Infirmary.  I have got a death certificate for his sister Mary, who died at home, 42 Harvey Street, Barnsley. James S Dakin is the informant living at the same address.

Now, my problem is I also found a marriage for James S Dakin marrying a Elsie M Hinkley from Clitheroe so sent for the certificate (which arrived this morning).  Marriage cert says James Sennett Dakin (41yrs) married Elsie M Hinkley (widow) on 22 January 1941.  His profession I given as Lance Corporal and father's name is Walter Dakin.  So this is obviously not my James.  I wouldn't have thought that James Sennett Dakin was all that common so I must admit to being a bit confused.  I've searched just for James Sinnott and James Dakin and can find nothing remotely near.

Any opinions/ideas greatly appreciated.
