Hi,

Need help please, with both surnames from marriage certificate. Both names a likely to be of Irish descent.

I'm confident of the 'W' as it appears a few time on the document as 'W'illiam

Banffshire / McGregor/Grassick in Tomintoul
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 10:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I have been researching Alexander McGregor Rose b 17th August 1846, at Kirkmichael, Banffshire.  He was raised by his maternal step-grandfather, viz: Alexander McGregor (described as otherwise childless). His parents were George Rose (appears as Ross is some searches) Tailor in Tomintoul, and Ann Innes.
Ann Innes is described on her death certificate (dated 15 March 1870) as,
“Ann Innes (illegitimate), widow of George Rose, Tailor. Female aged 46. Parents: William Innes, farmer and Margaret McGregor maiden surname Grassick.”
Any help or information on the step-grandfather, or the parents of Margaret Grassick, would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Caithness / Factor and Chamberlain to Earl of Caithness
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I would like some help please with the descendants of Alexander Rose b. c1620 in Nairn and died 1661 in Caithness.

He is the grandson of William Rose 11th of Kilravock, and the 5th son of John Rose of Broadley.
Alexander Rose, was factor and chamberlain to the Earl of Caithness. It is not clear whether it is George Sinclair, the 5th Earl (1566–1643) or George Sinclair, the 6th Earl (resigned 1672).

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Annie Drewitt, daughter or granddaughter
« on: Saturday 09 April 11 17:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Annie Drewitt born, Southampton between 1861 and 1864 (3 census entries vary). I am unable to find a birth, or parents for this lady.
In 1881 she is living with William Drewitt and Martha Drewitt, (born about 1823 Oxfordshire), at 1 Bevois Hill, South Stoneham, Hampshire. She is described as granddaughter.
In 1891, Annie Marner (nee Drewitt) is living at 12 Stockholm Road, Deptford, London, with husband Harry Marner, and Martha Drewitt (born abt. 1820 Oxfordshire) Martha is described as wife’s mother.
I believe she married Harry Marner, in October 1881, at Southampton. I also suspect that he may be her cousin. His parents were Joseph Henry Marner and Emily Drewitt, who was the daughter of William and Martha above named. Can anyone help me with this puzzle?

Midlothian / Burke and Hare
« on: Saturday 25 December 10 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,
Does anyone know where I can find a list of Governors for Calton Gaol or Jail. I’m interested to find out more about a ‘Captain Rose’ alleged to be William Burke’s (of Burke and Hare infamy) gaoler at the time of his hanging in Jan. 1829.

 :) Merry Xmas :)
