Surrey / Carshalton 1860-1880
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Did you have ancestors living in Carshalton between 1860 and about 1880?  I am preparing a book about Carshalton community at that time and would very much like to find photos of individuals of whatever social class  to help illustrate it.

Obviously photography was not that common at the time but examples do exist.  I would be very grateful if you could contact me if you can help.

Occupation Interests / What did a grounder do in a tannery?
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 10:28 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this one please.  I am researching the occupational history in my village in the 19th century and several men are described as "grounder".  There was a tannery and a paper mill nearby, but since one very useful man describes himself as "skinner/grounder" I'm guessing that the grounders worked in the tannery.

England / Wanted males born around 1830 Sussex, Lancs or Devon
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a thesis about young  males who immigrated to London, trying to work out why they came, what they did when they got there and whether they stayed.   As well as searching for typical behaviour, I am trying to find regional differences between those from Sussex, Devon  and Lancashire.

I would very much like to hear from anyone who had a male Sussex-, Devon- or Lancashire-born ancestor born 1829-1831, who lived in London in the period 1851 - 1861.

If you could contact me, I will let you know what information would be useful to me.
I am hoping this research will answer some of the questions family historians have about why their ancestors made large migratory moves.

Many thanks in advance.

I am researching a thesis about young Lancashire males who moved to London, trying to work out why they came, what they did when they got there and whether they stayed, this is going to be compared with similar work on young men from Devon and from Sussex.

I would very much like to hear from anyone who had a male Lancashire-born ancestor born 1829-1831, who lived in London in the period 1851 - 1861.

If you could contact me, I will let you know what information would be useful to me.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Look up 1851 Sussex census - John Bayley/Elizabeth
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 20:52 GMT (UK)  »
Could you please try to find John Bayley and his wife Elizabeth.  They raised a large family in Whatlington near Hastings, but just two of the children were still there in 1841.  I would calculate that John and Elizabeth would be in their sixties by 1851 (or dead of course!!) as they married around 1815.  Their youngest known child George would be 17 and next youngest William 20.   Daughter who might still be at home: Mary Ann 23.

Many thanks   Cheryl

Technical Help / Disappearance of part of Rootschat
« on: Monday 08 November 04 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
When I first joined, the "Home" page gave me all the options of where I could go.  Now I never get "The common room" and "lighter side" bit onscreen, only England onwards.  Also, many parts seem to be written on top of each other and are not clickable.

My computer is a Mac 8.5 and I cannot download Flash on it.  Is this the problem or do I have a virus or something?  (NOT a computer literate person).

By the way I am now also having problems with Leicester University's Historical Directories site, could it all be the same problem.??
