Perthshire / Location in Monzievaird & Strowan
« on: Wednesday 24 January 24 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
Patrick McDuff and Janet McVicker had 3 children from 1754 to 1761 in Monzievaird and Strowan.
I have 2 of the birth records, but cannot decipher the location where they lived.
I have attached one record (James McDuff) that contains this place name in two succeeding entries.
Can anyone tell me the name of this place?

Perthshire / My Drummond McGregor Connection
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
My McGregor Connection
For years I tried to find the parents of my most ancient Drummond ancestor, Josiah, who spent most of his life at Fornought farm in Fowlis Wester. I had thought that the family might have been McGregors who were hiding themselves from the authorities. Recently, with the help of British Ancestry, I find that this indeed was the case.
It appears that Josiah’s father was Donald McGregor Drummond, and his mother was Catharine Ferguson.
I also wondered why use the name Josiah; I could only find a handful of “Josiahs” in Scotlands People.
In Hebrew, it means “God Supports and Heals”, possibly referencing a McGregor birth in the face of the king’s prohibition of the name. There are other records that suggest that this family might have a connection with Rob Roy McGregor. I am presently researching records to see if that might be the case.
I’m wondering if anyone has any other information on a McGregorDrummond connection.

Europe / FRANCE: Parishes
« on: Sunday 28 April 19 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I am researching two of my LABRIE families who immigrated to Quebec from France in the mid 1600s. I know that one of the lines came from St-Germain-Laxis in the Seine-et-Marne department, Ile de France. I also have a marriage document (Jean-Baptiste Mignault/ Marie Boucher, married 1689 in Quebec) in which the priest indicates that Jean's parents, Louis Mignot/ Jeanne Charon came from
St-Germain-de-la-Cime in Brie, Sens Bourgogne. I have spent considerable time trying to find this particular parish without any success. I suspect that the entry (St-Germain-de-la-Cime) was an error and that it should have read 'St-Germain-Laxis'.
Can anyone confirm that St-Germain-de-la-Cime did or does exist?

Canada / The MILLET family in Quebec
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 18:45 BST (UK)  »
I have two families, Jeanne Millet (Guillaume Langlois) & Nicolas Millet (Catherine Lorion) in my database. I descend from both families. I know (from TANGUAY) that Nicolas is the son of Jacques Millet/ Jeanne Vincent. My research indicates that Jeanne Millet was also a daughter of Jacques/ Jeanne Vincent. The problem is that there is a significant discrepancy in birth dates & marriage dates for these two couples.
Nicolas Millet married Catherine Lorion 9Apr 1657, Montreal.
They had the following children in Montréal: Catherine 1658-1722 (Jean Raynaud 1671); Nicolas 1660-1735 (Catherine Chaperon 1684/ Catherine Gauthier 1695); Marie 1662-1751 (Jean Lacombe 1678); Jacques 1667-1745 (Elisabeth Hubert 1688); Jean 1674-1714 (M-Françoise Lamoureux 1702).
Jeanne Millet married Guillaume Langlois about 1590, St-Leonard-des-Parcs,  Alençon, Normandie.
They had the following children in France: Marguerite 1596-1665 (Abraham Martin 1621/ René Branche 1665); Françoise 1599 (Pierre Desportes 1629); Marie 1600 (Jean Juchereau 1621); Noël 1603-84 (Françoise Grenier 1634/ Marie Crevet 1666); Jean 1605-58 (Jacquette Charpentier 1630).
I feel confident that the information on Nicolas is correct.
However, I am unable to conclusively prove that Jeanne was the sister of Nicolas and daughter of Jacques Millet/ Jeanne Vincent.
Can anyone provide some clarification to this conundrum. Thank you.

Canada / Jean Mignault dit LaBrie, The Porpoise Hunter
« on: Friday 19 October 18 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the ancestors of my grandmother, Elizabeth Labrie, Quebec. Her most ancient ancestor was Louis Mignault; he married Jeanne Charon (Chazou) about 1664, St-Germain-Laxis (which is about 50km south of Paris). Their son, Jean Mignault dit Labrie married Marie-Xaintes Boucher7Nov 1869, Chateau Richer Quebec; my grandmother descends from this line.
There is some debate as to where Jean was born. I have other researchers claiming he was born about 1665, Brie, Ile et Vilaine, Bretagne France. This location is in northwest France, in Brittany, far removed from St-Germain-Laxis.
Does anyone have any definitive answer to this question?
If so, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Lanarkshire / The Salmonds of Balquhatstone
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 19:39 BST (UK)  »
George Waddell of Ballochney & Balquhatstone was married to Elizabeth Gaston Ralston. He died 1850, Slamannan. In his will, he mentioned Agnes Salmond, youngest daughter of Patrick Salmond; she was married to John Inglis, Shortridgehead.
I have been unable to determine who was Patrick’s wife. I wonder if it was Patrick married to Rebecca Marshel; however, they lived in Torpichen, so this seems incorrect. I had thought tha Agnes might have been the daughter of Robert Salmond/ Elizabeth Clerk, but this also seems incorrect, based on George Waddell’s will. Can anyone advise me as to the parents of Agnes Salmond?

Lanarkshire / Matthew Roberton of Shank
« on: Wednesday 25 January 17 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
I am reviewing my notes on William Main, son of John Main of Ballochney, who married Janet Roberton 24Aug 1711, New Monkland. Janet was the daughter of John Roberton/ Margaret Dalzel.
In the OPR Marriage record of William, it states that the witnesses were Matthew Roberton of Shank and John Main of Ballochney (William's brother).
I have tried to find more information concerning Matthew. I located a place named Shank Houp, east of Roberton, and south of Biggar (which is about 80km southeast of Glasgow). Does anyone have any information on 'Shank'?

Stirlingshire / a birth registered 68 years after the fact
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 22:31 BST (UK)  »
I recently reviewed the birth record of Thomas Main, schoolmaster, son of David Main/ Jean Russell; he was born 23Mar 1787, Slamannan.
The birth record reads as follows: “David & Jane Russell had a child born & Registered Dec 31st 1855 named Thomas.”
As well, all the births on this page were registered in 1855!
I realize this was the year Statutory registration commenced, but I'm baffled as to how a birth in 1787 would not be registered until 1855.
Who would have registered this birth?
Hopefully someone will have an answer. Thank you.

Lanarkshire / David Shanks/ Mary Scott 1862
« on: Friday 15 July 16 23:04 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching David Shanks/ Mary Scott who married 7Oct 1862, New Monkland. The marriage record states that David’s parents were David Shanks/ Agnes Shanks, and that Mary’s parents were William Scott/ Mary Dunn.
David Shanks/ Mary Scott had the following children in New Monkland: Mary Dunn Shanks 1863; William Main Shanks 1864; David Main Shanks 1865; David Main Shanks 1867; Isabella Scott Shanks 1868; John Scott Main Shanks 1869; Thomas Main Shanks 1871; Alexander 1873.
My interest in this couple relates to the use of MAIN in the naming of several of their children.
The likeliest possibility is that Agnes was the daughter of David Shanks/ Janet Main, but I have not been able to prove this.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to shed some light on this.
