East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Wishart St Andrews Church Tranent
« on: Thursday 06 November 08 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are any headstones at this church ?.   I think it is now owned by the local school and used as a library.
If I remember correctly there was not much land  there, so maybe I am wrong.  There just had to be somewhere else people were buried in Tranent besides the Old Parish Church, and before the town cemetery opened in 1905.

Antrim / John Benn -Crossmaglen-1824
« on: Monday 27 October 08 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with my grgrgrandfather John Benn.here is what I have so far.
According to a couple of census returns in fife Scotland he has listed Crossmaglen as his birth place in 1824.
He married a Mary Muir from Dalgety Fife
Had two children Maryann bapt 1846 at St.Nicholas of Myra Dublin, and Michael bapt.,1849 Finbar Cork.

In 1851 John and his family were in the Channel Islands with the 26th Reg., but I only have his children's births to prove that he was in Ireland before this.
His death cert in 1882 was signed by his son stating Denis Ben and Mary McKerral as his parents , but Michael drank a lot so can't be sure that this is correct.
I have tried in  to find his marriage cert. in Ireland Scotland and England but nothing so far.
The family has been Protestant since being in Scotland so I presume they were also Prot. in Ireland
Is there any way I can find a MC or BC for him?

Armed Forces / Fort Regent 1851
« on: Monday 20 October 08 19:02 BST (UK)  »
I am new to the Armed Forces link, and I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge about our armed forces.
I have a John Benn in the 1851 census at the barracks, Fort Regent ,Channel Islands. I am pretty sure it says the 26th Regiment.
Would this be the 26th Reg. of the Cameronians, or is there another 26th ?
I am out of ideas how to track his army records.  I have tried various sites including Kew.  There are many references to Lord Benn, but my John was a private from  Ireland.  His children were born in Ireland, so not sure how he ended up in the Channel Islands with his family.

The town cemetery in Tranent opened in 1905, does anyone know where people were buried before then.  I know there is the old Parish Church, but was there anywhere else. ?
Was there a Paupers field ?
