Ireland / Irish grandad
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find any record of my great-grandfather. His name was Charles Arthur Cullen. He died in Billericay, Essex in 1936, aged 58 years. My mum always said that he was her Irish granddad who committed suicide by coal gas. He wasn't married to my great-gran, so no info has been found about his family or birthplace. I wonder, if anyone has access to the Irish births, marriages and deaths index, can you do a quick search? I can't find any record of him in the English & Welsh records, so I'm beginning to think that he was born and raised in Ireland, but I don't know where.

Thanks!

Kris.

I wonder if anyone has access to the burial records for Islington? I want to find out if Clarissa Cady (nee Todd) is buried in that area. She died in 25 Nov 1897.

Thanks.

World War Two / Royal Marines
« on: Monday 21 March 05 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
I've been reading a book and searching the web for info on 45 commando RM (1943-1946). It seems that there were different troops (A, B). I don't know whcih one my granddad would have been in, but I'd like to find out so that I can know which battles he was directly involved in. I was thinking of ordering his service records; do you think it would tell me which troop he was in etc?

I was also intestested to know if ALL Royal Marines at this time would have had to go to Achnacarry for commando training? Does anyone have any experience of the RMs at this time (I mean ex-soldiers, not women who had illicit relations with RMs during WWII ;) ). Were all royal marines classed as commandos during 1943-1945. BTW granddad was in 45 commando RM. I don't remember my granddad telling me about his training or anything specific about the battles. Did Hitler's secret command to his senior officers mean that all captured RM commandos were to be shot. He talks about commandos, but I don't know if RM commandos are the same thing. I understand there were army commandos at that time too.

Does anyone know anything about 45 commando on D-day?

Cheers.

The Common Room / Register?
« on: Wednesday 05 January 05 15:43 GMT (UK)  »
Was there a register of all people living in the UK during WWI? Would it give name, address, DOB of civilians? Is the register accessible to the public?

I've heard of a national registration card (1915), but I don't know if anything was kept that would be of use to genealogists.

Does anyone have the *new* NBI? Would you mind doing a quick search for Alfred James Surridge?

Thanks,
