Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name illegible on 1841 census
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 09:15 BST (UK)  »
I have done a lot of research over the years and find most things eventually but this one, the middle name, has me stumped. I do believe that the second letter (a c or e perhaps) has been struck out, which makes it look like  Ll as if a Welsh word but this is well nigh impossible. The family name is Hann - not Hand - and they lived at Morton Engine.  If anyone can throw any light on the matter it will save me a lot of head scratching. Thank you.

Northumberland / Edmenson, Burrell
« on: Tuesday 21 August 07 11:22 BST (UK)  »
James Edmenson, baptised Whittingham near Shilbottle, Oct 1788,  married Margaret Burrell, at St James, Shilbottle, in Jun 1815. She was apparently the daughter of Thomas and Isabella Burrell, and was baptised in Shilbottle in Mar 1786. Their son Thomas, c1815, was my Gt gt grandfather and married a Hannah whom I believe may  have been called Chambers.  Two of Thomas's daughters used the double name Burrell Edmenson, which led me to believe that their mother was a Burrell, but this seems to have come from Thomas himself, whose own mother was the Burrell.
Thomas is described as a horse breaker in Shilbottle in 1841.

Any further information on these people would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Roscommon / Logan from Roscommon
« on: Tuesday 21 August 07 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Amongst my ancestors is a Jane Logan who married a John Potts and was living in Gatehead.  In the 1861 census she was apparently working on a rabbit farm, without her husband, but with her young daughter.  It gives her place of birth as Co. Roxcommon, Ireland, which I assume is Roscommon. She was aged 24 at that time so would have been born around 1837.

In 1851 she was living in Gateshead (Hillgate?) with her mother, also called Jane Logan, born c 1903, from Ireland.  There was also a son, Martin, aged 19, and a lodger, Amy Hicks, aged 16.  Young Jane and Amy worked in a ropery and Martin was a saw mill labourer. There was no father and the mother is described as Head of the household.

If anyone can throw any further light on this family I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,

Durham / Morton Engine
« on: Saturday 27 November 04 09:31 GMT (UK)  »
On some of the Census returns one of my ancestors married a woman whith Morton Engine as her place of birth. Their children are also said to be born at Morton Engine.  On a later one I see them living at Morton Engine Row, Morton Grange.

Would I be right in thinking that this means the later address is correct in all cases, and the earlier references were just not fully put down? Or was the name change a later addition?

Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Midlothian / Edmundstone
« on: Thursday 11 November 04 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My interest is in following up my Edmenson family, also recorded as Edmundson, Edmonson etc , which I understand was a corruption of Edmondstone and which came from around Edinburgh.

This part of the family appears to have moved down through Northumberland into Durham and I wonder if anyone has any information on this subject or knows where I can find any.

I have no idea as yet when they came to England, but my great great grandfather was born in Northumberland in 1817.

Durham / Neasham Place
« on: Thursday 11 November 04 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
In 1861 my great great grandfather James Edmenson (then spelled Edmundson) lived in Neasham Place in Houghton and is described as a coachman and groom.  My grandfather had told me that his grandad had been a coachman for a big house.

I believe that there is/was a Neasham House which was or became a girls's school and I wonder if anyone could comment on the likelihood of that being where he worked as a coachman.

Is there any way of finding out any more? I'd be grateful for anything you can tell me.

Durham / Red Burn Row?
« on: Monday 11 October 04 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to link a Joseph Allen said to have been born in Red Burn (or Barn) Row, Houghton-le-Spring,  c1830, with my great-great-grandfather Joseph Allen, also born c1830, but his birthplace is given as: Cross Fence(?).

This Joseph's wife and children's birth place is given as Morton Engine  (1861 Census) so I feel perhaps Cross Fence is also in that area.

Can anyone tell me where anyof these places are/were and if perhaps the two Joseph's could possibly be the same person.   ???
