The Lighter Side / Battle of Waterloo
« on: Friday 19 June 15 13:34 BST (UK)  »
I am just watching a documentary on Tg4 (The Irish language channel) on some of the Irish & Scottish who fought in the Battle alongside Wellington. It is a dramatisation of their own words. So I was wondering if any rootschatters have an ancestor who fought in the battle? I know of course records would be hard to find.

The Lighter Side / A history of violence

Anyone watch this on yesterday?  For me it was an interesting program regarding social history of the Georgian Age.  I did not realize for instance that the Irish had been working in London for so long.

Dublin / Martin family diary from 1916
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Just reading in the Irish Independent regarding a diary from 1916 published online by Trinity students.  It is a diary written by Mary Martin to her son Charlie missing in action in 1916. It gives details of the family and some images from the time. Sadly Charlie was later discovered to have been killed.

Family History Beginners Board / tracing family after 1911
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have had great success tracing my family back but would like to be able to trace them after 1911.

My grandfather had 3 siblings listed on the 1911 census but emigrated after world war two and then died shortly after. My father consequently had no contact with his Aunts and Uncles. All my family from that side of the family are deceased so i have no information about them.

Can any one give me any suggestions on what sources are available to trace family after 1911.

I do know the date of death of my great grandfather and that my father`s uncle was the informant. I think there may have been a will but am living in Ireland not the UK so am unsure as to how to search for a UK will from abroad.

Thank you for any assistance

Family History Beginners Board / naturalization
« on: Friday 04 March 11 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

Having recently discovered ancestors who emigrated to Australia and a possible emigrant to the USA I am struggling to understand naturalization.

I am a UK citizen and have lived in Ireland for the past 13yrs. I am married to an Irishman and as such am entitled to apply for Irish citizenship. However have chosen not to do so as there are no benefits to doing so.  Although i have a great love for Ireland in my heart i will always be English.

Why did our ancestors who emigrated feel it necessary to apply for  citizenship?  Were there the strict visa rules that exist today? Or was it that they felt a patriotic feeling towards there new country? Or just an attempt to fit in?

Was it just people who emigrated to America who applied for citizenship or did it apply to other countries as well?

Finally how long did you have to reside in the country before you could apply for citizenship?

Thank you for any assistance on this subject.

Could someone look up the following census entry for me please

John H Hall in kings new york,

Other members of household Arthur and Helena Gamble.

Trying to find out if this is my relation born 1877 Lambeth.  I have found an emigration in 1907 via the ellis island website but unfortunately the manifest is missing so i am unable to check if this is my ancestor.

I would be willing to look up anything UK related.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / sturbeck road alms house boston
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Looking through the 1861 census i see that a relation was in the Alms house in  Sturbeck road in Boston.  She was a mariners widow.

She did have family however it seems as if most of them had moved out of the county to take up work.

What would life have been like, was it like a workhouse?

Thanks for any info

Australia / General life
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
It seems pretty likely that two of my ancestors emigrated to Queensland in the 1880`s. Is there anywhere i can find out what life would have been like for them on arrival? They settled in Brisbane.

I don`t know as yet what they were employed in but would like to have a general overview of what awaited them. They were not convicts.

I have a photocopy of the marriages for St Georges Hanover Square from the end of September (29th) to the 2nd of October.

I can work out most of the names and dates if you would like me to check it for your ancestor i will be willing to do so.
There are 9 entries on the sheet.
