Hello everyone,
Having recently discovered ancestors who emigrated to Australia and a possible emigrant to the USA I am struggling to understand naturalization.
I am a UK citizen and have lived in Ireland for the past 13yrs. I am married to an Irishman and as such am entitled to apply for Irish citizenship. However have chosen not to do so as there are no benefits to doing so. Although i have a great love for Ireland in my heart i will always be English.
Why did our ancestors who emigrated feel it necessary to apply for citizenship? Were there the strict visa rules that exist today? Or was it that they felt a patriotic feeling towards there new country? Or just an attempt to fit in?
Was it just people who emigrated to America who applied for citizenship or did it apply to other countries as well?
Finally how long did you have to reside in the country before you could apply for citizenship?
Thank you for any assistance on this subject.
