Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Transportation
« on: Thursday 12 May 16 15:10 BST (UK)  »
In 1843 my g g grandmother's brother was transported for 10 years to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania)  for a string of petty offences.  His wife who was left behind with 3 young children joined him 11 years later.  They both died in Tasmania, the wife in 1883 and the husband in 1892.  Their descendants then made Australia their home.

What I would like to know:  how was the wife - Elizabeth - able to afford the journey in 1854 with three young children in tow?  She was a 'glover' in Somerset.    Anna

I have looked through all the BBC schedules and can't find the final one of this series - Frances de la Tour.  Does anyone know anything about this, have I missed something?

Leicestershire / Sands marriage
« on: Tuesday 24 September 13 23:44 BST (UK)  »
I have a baptism for Charles Sands 1785 to William and Ann Sands in Sutton Cheney, Leicestershire.  I found his baptism on IGI in their parish records; and on checking further on the IGI I found that Charles had 3 other siblings baptised: Mary 1781; Eliza 1787 and William 1789.

I now need to find the marriage of the parents of these children viz. William and Ann Sands.

If anyone has access to possibly Sutton Cheney or perhaps nearby villages I would be extremely grateful.  This is my first foray into Leicestershire.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Emily Pennicott
« on: Monday 22 July 13 23:01 BST (UK)  »

I initially posted this on the South African board, but I thought that I had better post it on this one; giving me an extra go at finding her:

I have found a marriage of my great aunt Emily on the IGI - an actual copy of the marriage certificate!  However I can't find a passage for her to SA.

Her name is Emily Pennicott born in 1868 in Singleton in Sussex.  She is on the 1871 and 1881 census with her parents in Singleton, but I can't find her on the 1891.  She married Jeremiah Austin in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Durban 31st January 1892.

I wonder if she went as a 'maid' with a family before finding and marrying Jermiah.  If anyone should find a passage for her I would be very grateful.

In anticipation, Anna

Australia / Frances C DIBBS
« on: Thursday 04 April 13 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Frances C. Dibbs was the sister of my great grandmother Elizabeth Dibbs:

I am wondering if anyone in Australia has any idea what became of her.  The information I have is as follows:

Frances Catherine was baptised  at St. Martin’s in the Fields 12 August 1832. (Ref: St. Martin’s in the Fields Parish register).

In 1841 Frances was living with a Jno Hould aged 40 and a ‘smith’ together with his wife Frances aged 35, and a daughter Eliza aged 6 months. Frances was aged 11 (Ref.  1841 census HO 107/1046).

A Frances C Dibbs arrived in Australia aboard the ship ‘Stebonheath’ Friday 11 May 1849. “Friday, May 11— The ship Stebonheath 926 tons. John Sargeant, commander, last from Plymouth, 31st January”  (Ref. 12 May 1849 , South Australian Register).

If anyone can come up with anything I would be most grateful.  Anna

I think that this is on the wrong Australian Board.  It is NOT completed!!

Sussex Lookup Requests / Stapley marriage
« on: Thursday 27 December 12 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have been going through my 'archives' on the Stapleys of Sussex.  For a long time I have had a John Stapley born 1798 in Wadhurst to William and Mary Stapley.  I have followed John through the census up until his death in 1882.  He married a Lucy of Lewes c. 1825 - re the birth of their daughter Elizabeth c 1826 on the 1841 census.

The point of this is I do not know the maiden name of Lucy, only that she was born in Lewes.  She was buried in Wadhurst aged 78 on 3 May 1881.  Her age stays consistent throughout the census 1841-1881.
I do hope that some one can help. With very many thanks. Anna
