Armagh / Inch
« on: Tuesday 24 September 19 16:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a couple of verifications for my Lundy Ancestors who moved from Ireland to Scotland around 1805.

1. A statement from a trial, where one ancestor confirms he was from the county of Armagh.
2. An application for poor relief by his brother who states his place of birth c. 1791 as Inch.

I cannot find an Inch in Armagh. Does anyone know if one existed around that time?

Thank you.

Ayrshire / What does Annuitant mean?
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
If a person in the Census is described as Annuitant, what is the likely source of income. I have an example in my family history. I know her husband was a weaver so they probably had very little money. I have copied the extract below:

Surname       First name(s)       Rel       Status       Sex       Age    Occupation       Where Born       Remarks
LITTLE       James       Head       M       M       21       Shoemaker (Journeyman)        Ayrshire - Fenwick

Dumfriesshire / Dumfries Catholics
« on: Friday 15 November 13 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything regarding the naming convention for Catholics? I have copies of some of the Dumfries Catholic baptisms for the early 1800s and notice that a confirmation name is given which is usually different to the baptism name.

1. Is there any rhyme or reason to this naming?
2. On subsequent events like marriage, if carried out in the Catholic church, did they use the baptism name or the confirmation name when they recorded it?

Any info on this would be great!

Ayrshire / Fenwick, Ayrshire - Was this murder?
« on: Sunday 12 February 12 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

The following is from the Fenwick Burial Register for 1835 and It sounds like murder to me. Does anyone know where I can start looking to find out more about the case?  :o

**** McConnel - Margaret McConnel wife of Hugh Lundie an Irishman in Fenwicktown was found dead on the third of August 1835 in that part of Fenwick Water called Alexander's Weel with a rope tied firm round her neck and a cart bush fastened to it. The body was inspected by the two Surgeons of this place and buried on the sixth said month.

Thank you
Norma  :)

Ayrshire / Kilmarnock Standard Lookups
« on: Monday 05 December 11 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Is there anyone who is able to do look-ups from the Kilmarnock Standard?
I am interested in finding any obituary or article relating to my Great-Grandfather who died on 25 September 1915 (WW1). His name was William McGhie Wells. He was initially reported missing so his death might not have been reported until a little later.

Thank you.

« on: Monday 05 December 11 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
 :)

Hi,

I am trying to find out whether the Poor Relief/Poorhouse Applications for Dumfries and Galloway are available anywhere. I have an ancestor who died in the Moorfield and his application might provide more info about him.

Thank you.
