London and Middlesex / St. Mary Magdalen, Old Fish Street Burials
« on: Wednesday 09 June 10 20:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for burials in the parish of St. Mary Magdalen, Old Fish Street, on and around the year 1808. However, I can't see anywhere that I can access them. The recordset in Ancestry's browsable collection for this parish that ends in 1810 actually ends around 1796 for burials. I thought that maybe burials stopped after this date, but I have since found a website that has transcriptions from 1813-53, so I assume burials were still taking place in 1808. If anyone is able to point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello,

I've recently found an ancestor's baptism from the late 18th century in the British Lying-In Hospital in Holborn. The record contains patient details such as the date that the mother came in. It also gives both parents' names and the columns 'occupation', 'age' and 'settlement'.

Occupation is the father's occupation; I am fairly sure that the age is the mother's age; And as most of the entry refers to the mother, I assume that the settlement refers to her, as opposed to her husband. However, I've read online that married women took their husband's parish of settlement - was this always the case? And is the parish of settlement the parish where the person (or their husband) originates from, or could it just be somewhere that they lived for a period of time?

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello,

I'm looking for a marriage between a Thomas Courtney and an Eliza Hine Pollard, which is in the GRO indexes in the first quarter of 1873 in the Luton district. I don't know which church it took place in, but what I believe to be Eliza and her family are living in the St. Mary's ecclesiastical district of Luton on the 1871 census. If anyone can help I would be very grateful, even if it's just to rule some churches out.

Thanks,

Matthew

Edit: I've updated the title of this thread now, following Tazzie's confirmation of the church.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Holy Trinity, Liverpool Marriage Lookup Please
« on: Friday 18 December 09 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for a marriage between an Edward Young and an Elizabeth who appear on the 1861 census living in Oxford. They were both from Oxfordshire, but their eldest child was born in Liverpool about 1847. The best match for a marriage in the GRO indexes that I have seen is an Edward Young and an Elizabeth Baskett who are on the same page in the June quarter of 1846, in the Liverpool district. I have found what I'm fairly sure is their daughter's baptism at St. Peter in Liverpool the next year (1847), so I wonder if the marriage took place there. If anyone has access to the registers I'd appreciate a lookup.

Thanks,

Matthew

Edit: Changed the title of this thread after receiving Gortonboy's information.

Hello,

I have seen a record of an Edward Young marrying an Amelia Beesly on the 1st August 1869 at St. Mary the Virgin in Thame. If anybody has access to the registers I would appreciate a lookup for details from the marriage entry, i.e. father's names, father's occupations, witnesses etc.

Thanks,

Matthew

London and Middlesex / Looking for Clayton Family Early C20th
« on: Monday 30 November 09 22:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather's parents, whom I haven't been able to locate on the censuses. My great-grandfather was born Stanley Clayton, on the 30th August 1905, at 45 Jamaica Street, Mile End Old Town. His birth was registered on the 9th of October of the same year, and he was baptised between these two events, at Christ Church in Jamaica Street on the 20th September. At all three dates the family were apparently living at 45 Jamaica Street. Stanley's parents were James and Minnie Clayton (Minnie née Nevard). James was a crane driver on the birth certificate, and is simply described as a 'driver' in the baptism record.

However, other than this record, I have not been able to find any record of the family. My grandmother has told me the story of the family, as Stanley understood it. Apparently James and Minnie had three children together. There were two sons, James and Stanley, and a daughter named Florence. Apparently James the father died in accident, in which he fell under a train (or so the story goes), and Minnie was left to raise the children on her own. At some point the children were taken into some kind of children's home, and didn't see their mother for years, although she did meet up with them all when they were adults.

I couldn't find any record of James and Minnie's marriage, but I knew that Minnie had remarried later, so I ordered that certificate, to get an idea of her age and father's name. At the time of the marriage (1922), she was 37 years old, and the marriage took place in Mile End Old Town. Her father's name is given as Charles Nevard, who was apparently a 'butcher (master)'. It also gives a middle-name of Florence. The certificate also states that she was a spinster, which explains why no marriage between she and James can be found. The date of birth that can be deduced from these details, and the father's name are a good match for a Minnie Florence Nevard from Lexden in Essex, which fits with other stories I have heard about her being raised in a Rural setting, probably in Suffolk (and Lexden isn't that far away from Suffolk).

However, I can still find no record of James Clayton, nor the other two children. I don't know where they lived with the exception of the period of the 30th of August until the 9th October 1905. Can anybody find anything that may be of help, or suggest where to look next?

Thanks,

Matthew

The Common Room / Request for Advice on Finding a Living Relative - TONKS
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 15:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am hoping to contact a living relative. I have found many since I started searching, but this is one person in particular who has a photo of (and most likely stories about) members of my maternal family. My great-grandfather was James Ernest Tonks (1913-1941). He was one of at least nine children born to George Tonks and Florence Tonks (née Ketteridge), and was born in West Ham. He died when he was just 28 and left behind a widow and a young son. His window remarried and so rarely spoke of her first husband. His son (my grandfather), also died young, and my family never really stayed in contact with James Ernest's siblings, with the exception of one of them, his sister Rose, who died before I was born. We have a couple of photos of James Ernest, probably from when he was in his early twenties.

On the Tonks Message Board on Ancestry, there is a post from September 2002 by a Dave Tonks who writes that he is the son of James Ernest's younger brother Henry Robert (b. 1918). In his list of his aunts and uncles he names James Ernest, and goes on to say that he has a photo of the whole family (children and parents), minus his father, who hadn't been born at the time. I would really like to contact Dave Tonks.

Seemingly, in 2002 it wasn't necessary to subscribe to Ancestry in order to post on the Message Boards, and so Dave just had to enter an email address. I have tried emailing him, but I got an automatic response saying that the account had expired. I also posted a message on an East London forum asking if anyone could put me in touch with him. I don't even know roughly where to geographically expect him to be. I think in or around London is my best bet (as that was where his father was born), but the username he used on the Message Board consisted of his name and then some numbers, which I thought may have been his date of birth, but looking at the birth indexes for the quarter that date falls into and the quarter after, the only two David Tonks born were in Sutton Coldfield and Durham, either or which could be him as far as I know.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Matthew

Hello all,

I'd like confirmation of some baptisms that I've seen in the IGI, and also some help in putting some of the information into context. The family in question appear on the 1841 census as Watkin and Elizabeth Morris and their children, Elizabeth (20), Alfred (15) and Frederick (11). Now I'm fairly sure that I've found Alfred and Frederick in the IGI in the parish of Old Church, Saint Pancras. There are two children with these names baptised on the same day, 29th August 1830. Their date of births correspond too, Alfred in 1826 and Frederick in 1830.

So I looked to see if Elizabeth was baptised on the same day, and I only found one likely match, which was a baptism in the same parish three years earlier, on the 28th November 1827. However, if the year of birth for this child is correct then she was less than five weeks old at the time, and so can't be the one aged 20 in 1841. She was, however, the daughter of a Watkin Morris. But not Watkin and Elizabeth, Watkin and Maria.

Could there really have been two Watkin Morris in the same parish? I didn't think it would be such a popular name. I've not found a marriage for him yet, so he could have been married more than once, but it would be strange if he had a child with an Elizabeth in 1826, one with a Maria in 1827 and then another with an Elizabeth in 1830. Hopefully the occupations and residencies will clear things up (if they are recorded in the registers).

Thank you any help you can offer,

Matthew

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / BEAL Baptism Look-up Please!
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am looking for a  baptism of a Samuel Weston Beal who was born around the year 1799 in Oundle, according the 1851 census (unfortunately the last census before his death). I know nothing about his parents and little about him. He later moved to Shoreditch, seemingly married a local woman and worked as a cabinet maker. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Matthew
