Other Countries / CHILE - ODGERS Benjamin and THOMAS Ann (Ana) after Feb 1825
« on: Saturday 02 September 23 04:11 BST (UK)  »
I’m looking for any information on Benjamin ODGERS and his wife Ann  (Ana) THOMAS in Chile after 1825.

I think Benjamin ODGERS might have been a copper miner or smelter. His brother in law Mauris THOMAS worked in the copper industry in Chile  in the late 1820s-40s and in South Australia from 1848.

Benjamin ODGERS married Ann THOMAS on 12 Feb 1825  in Gwennup, Cornwall. Ann’s brother Mauris THOMAS and his wife Mary Ann THOMAS nee PERKINS were witnesses on the marriage licence.

Benjamin and Ann had 3 children born in Chile, Juan, David and Elizabeth.  On David’s death cert his nationality is recorded as English but probably born in Chile.

Juan ODGERS, born, married and died in Chile.
Information from Juan’s death cert (Oct 1887)
Age at death 53 ie born about 1834, nationality Chilean, residence Tongoy, occ herrero - blacksmith? , wife Faustina ALVAREZ, parents Benjamin ODGERS and Ana THOMAS

David ODGERS, probably born in Chile, married and died in Chile.
Information from David’s Chilean death cert  (1894)
Age at death 56 ie born about 1838, nationality English, residence Coquimbo, occ unclear, wife Carmen VALDEBENITO,  parents Benjamin ODGERS and Ana THOMAS

Elizabeth Jane ODGERS, born in Chile, married and died in Australia.

Australia / CURNOW William - any info after his arrival in Melbourne in Dec 1852
« on: Sunday 13 August 23 10:00 BST (UK)  »

I’m looking for any information on William CURNOW after he arrived in Melbourne on the Constance Dec 1852.
He travelled with his wife Hannah, daughter Ann Lee and his grandsons John and Joseph. All the family used  the surname CURNOW, even thought Ann’s married name was THOMAS.
On the passenger list William is aged 64.

I can’t find him after he arrived in Australia.
I know that William’s daughter Ann Lee THOMAS went straight to the goldfields in Bendigo with her husband John THOMAS. John died there in 1857.
Ann and her children then moved to Strathalbyn South Australia. (Members of her husband’s THOMAS family lived in the district.)
Ann’s mother Hannah CURNOW also moved to Strathalbyn and was buried in the cemetery there in 1870.

That’s all I have. I don’t know if William CURNOW accompanied the family to Bendigo or South Australia. I can’t find a death record or other documents for him in either state.

Before his arrival in 1852: William CURNOW  married Hannah DAVY/DAVEY in Illogan Cornwall in 1813. In the 1851 England census he was living with his wife in Illogan.

Ayrshire / Place name in Colmonell Ayrshire - looks like Laglartry
« on: Monday 07 August 23 08:57 BST (UK)  »

Here are two images from Colonell baptism register 1778 and 1780. I can’t work out the place name in the entries. It looks like Laglartry, but I can’t find that on any maps. I’m hoping someone with local knowledge will know where this place is.

The parents Gavin and Sarah were agricultural labourers so it might be the name of a farm.

Australia / THOMAS Ann Lee nee CURNOW South Australia burial location 1893
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I’m looking for the burial place/burial record of Ann Lee THOMAS nee CURNOW.
According to the database “Australia, Death Index, 1787-1985”,  Ann Lee THOMAS died 18 Feb 1893 at Mickies Flat, Curramulka, South Australia.

Her son John THOMAS and his wife Frances MILLER lived in the Curramulka district in the 1880-90s. Their daughter Marion Eva? THOMAS died at Mickies Flat 10 Feb 1882.

The obvious burial place would be the Curramulka cemetery but I can't find any records for Ann or Marion there.

Any suggestions as to where Ann Lee THOMAS nee CURNOW might be buried? Were people buried at a different cemetery in that period?

Europe / Germany - Borken archives lookup request SUTFELS Anton & NIESING Xtina
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 10:34 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping there is someone who has access the archives in Borken Westphalia.

On the IGI, I have found a transcription for the marriage of Anton SUETFELS & Xtina [sic] (Christina)  NIESING 3 Feb 1811 in Vreden, Westphalia (probably St Georg Roman Catholic church). This transcript does not give any details about age, fathers' names & occupations.

As far as I know, the only access to the original parish record is at Borken Archives.
(A digital copying program is underway in the Münster Diocese, but, as it is being rolled alphabetically, Vreden records will probably only be online at the end of 2018)

Hoping someone can help out

I am looking for the marriage of John GARRAWAY and Mary Unknown.
The marriage date is probably in the 1730s and possibly in Old Sodbury or close by.

John and Mary had three known children baptised in Old Sodbury Gloucestershire:
Francis  baptised 8 Sep 1738
Jane baptised 24 Jan 1740
Sarah baptised 19 Nov 1742

John and Mary’s daughter Jane GARRAWAY married Thomas WATTS on or after 28 Nov 1762. I have seen a transcript of the marriage bond dated 28 Nov 1762 .

I am also looking for the burial /will of either John or Mary GARRAWAY.
After the death of her husband Thomas WATTS in 1770, Jane WATTS nee GARRAWAY married Thomas PEACHEY in 1776 in Old Sodbury. The witnesses at Jane WATTS'  2nd marriage were her parents John and Mary GARAWAY [sic]

It is possible that the John GARRAWAY I am researching is the son of John GARRAWAY who died in 1734 in Old Sodbury. In his will, written in 1732, the executors were his wife Jane and son John.
John GARRAWAY, the son of John and Jane, was baptised in Old Sodbury 1713 or 1714. The parish register reads “John the son of John Garroway and Jane his wife Novemb the 20th”

Note: In A* the baptism year has been mis-transcribed as 1725.

Australia / MANNES Frederick Charles c 1863 - 1912
« on: Monday 02 November 15 08:01 GMT (UK)  »
Frederick Charles MANNES married Ann SWAYSLAND in Sydney in 1895

In the newspaper reports about his death in 1912 he is said to be 49 years old, to have lived in NSW for 31 about years, and to be a native of London. Family stories say he was actually from Germany, went to the UK and from there to Australia

The NSW BDM death index for 1912 records that his parents were Frederick and Christina but this may not be correct

I'm looking for help to find:
his date of arrival in Australia and port of arrival (from death reports this could be about 1881)
his birth date and location (from death reports this could be abt 1863)

When he died he was working as a baker. Family stories say that he made european-style cakes.

Thanks
Barb
