Durham / Death at Durham County Asylum
« on: Monday 08 September 14 18:16 BST (UK)  »
We recently got a death certificate for a relative who died in 1908 in the County Asylum in Durham at Sedgefield and there are some questions it raises which i am hoping Rootschaters will be able to help us with.
Firstly, the place of death is stated on the certificate as being in the County Asylum Mortuary. Would a person have been taken to the mortuary to actually die ? It seems strange to me. Can anyone shed any light on why this may be so ?
Secondly, as far as i'm aware the County Hospital was a mental institution yet the death certificate says the cause of death was "General paralysis caused by an accident whilst following his employment". He was a miner. I have no information yet as to when the actual accident took place.
Was there also a medical part to the County Asylum ?
If not, does anyone have any idea why someone would be there after a seemingly nasty accident at work ?
He was living in Quebec up in West Durham at the time, why would he have been taken to Sedgefield ? He had a wife, siblings and other family in and around Quebec at the time. Also i have found a death record for him at St Josephs, Patrick and Cuthbert in Cornforth which is a fair distance from Quebec where i would have expected him to be buried. Any ideas why Cornforth ?
There was an inquest held for which i have not been able to see the record of so far as i live abroad and will not be visiting in the near future. Maybe the answers lie in that.
Any ideas on the answers to the above questions would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

Hello RootsChatters,
I am no longer able to access the DMM website and get an error message as follows......

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /colliery/ on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have absolutely no idea why as i used to access the site previously without any problem. Can anyone  help me resolve this frustrating problem or know what the error message means please. I have tried on various laptops with the same result.
Many thanks in advance,
Kabeja.

Laois (Queens) / Place name in Laois. Help please.
« on: Monday 02 September 13 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I  recently came across an English 1911 census return in which it was stated by a relative, Margaret Kenna, that she came from Mordeu Bay, Queens County. There is a possibility it is Morden Bay. Margaret was born in 1870.
I have searched for this place but can't find anything that even remotely resembles it. Any help in identifying where this place is would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Laois (Queens) / Mary Kennah and Edward Bannan
« on: Friday 30 August 13 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have posted about the above two on here before without much success but now have some more information so hopefully someone may be able to help.
Previously i thought their names were Mary Kenny and Edward Barnen as per various English census returns and certificates. However, my brother has just visited Durham records office and has found various Catholic entries which state clearly that the family names we should have been looking for are Mary Kennah  b.1841 and Edward Bannan  b. 1838.
Mary stated consistently she is from Queens County and was married to Edward sometime before 1865 in Ireland, very likely in Queens County. They had two children who said they were born there, they were Mary Ann Bannan  b.1865 and James Bannan  b.1867.
We have also found a death for an Edward Bannan in Abbeyleix registered in 1870 aged 32 which would give him a birth year of 1838. This would fit nicely with Mary remarrying in Durham, England in 1871 to Patrick O'Neil who was also from Queens County. We know for sure she was called Bannan when she married Patrick and that her maiden name was Kennah.
Any help in finding Mary and Edwards marriage, the births of their children Mary Ann and James or the births of Mary Kennah  and Edward Bannan would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Wexford / Moses Leary born 1839/42
« on: Friday 30 August 13 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Moses Leary was born in County Wexford circa 1839/42, (sorry i can't be more precise, the dates vary according to different English censuses !) and moved to County Durham, England about 1868.
In the 1911 census he is down as coming from a village i cannot decipher. It looks like Camin Village ? Carnin Village ? and i can find nothing at all in County Wexford which corresponds to these. Does anyone have any idea what the village may be please ?
Moses was married to Ellen/Esther (? depends on which census) sometime around 1870 according to the 1911 English census although so far i have found no record of their marriage. I suspect they were married earlier than this as they appear in County Durham on the 1871 English census with three children, Thomas aged 5, Patrick 3, and Mary Ann aged 6 months.
Any help with either the village name or marriage would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

London and Middlesex / Thomas and Martha Clark 1861 census.
« on: Wednesday 05 September 12 17:13 BST (UK)  »
In the 1861 census Thomas Clark is down as being from Heington, Durham, England and aged 51. The birthplace i think is a mis spelling and should be Heighington, Durham, England. I also can not make out clearly what his age is on the handwritten part of the census. The Thomas Clark i am looking for was born in Heighington, Durham in 1805 so would be 55/56 years old in 1861. His wife in the 1861 census is Martha aged 57 and born in Whitechapel, Middlesex. They were living at 25, High Street, Bow, London, Middlesex.
After a lot of searching i can not find either a marriage for them, any children they may have had or any sign of them in the 1841, 1851, 1871 or 1881 census !!
Thomas appears back in Durham in the 1891 census as a widower living with his sister and her family.
If anyone could help me find where Thomas was before 1861, when he got married, if he and Martha had any children or where they were after 1861 i would be extremely grateful.
Many thanks,
Kabeja.

Durham Lookup Requests / Thomas Clark born 1805 Heighington, Durham
« on: Wednesday 15 August 12 00:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have an image of Thomas' birth from the Bishops transcripts. I also have him in the 1891 census when he is living with his sister Hannah Winter and her family at Castle Eden Colliery.
I think i may have found him on the 1861 census living at Bow in Middlesex with a wife called Martha who says she is from Whitechapel, Middlesex. The image however is not very clear and his place of birth is spelt wrong, it is down as Heington, (?) Durham.
Despite extensive searching I can find no trace of him in any of the other censuses or a record of a marriage for him and Martha. Any help on locating Thomas in 1841, 1851, 1871 or 1881 or a marriage would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Kabeja.
