Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mary Ann Farnell - through the censuses
« on: Saturday 11 August 18 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Looking for an elusive lady.

Mary Ann Farnell (sometimes Farnall) born in Leeds 2 Dec 1809 to Thomas Farnell and Annabella née Peacock; died in Leeds 15 Oct 1880 and buried in Bramley. I have the details of her birth, death, and even her will, but cannot find her in any census apart from 1841 when she's still living at home with her father in Bingley. She never married.

If anyone can find her in the '51, '61 and '71 censuses I would be very grateful.

Bonus points to anyone who can tell me the fate of her mother Annabella - not in the '41 census with her family, so presuming she died before it. The family were in London for the births of Mary Ann's sisters in 1812 and 1814 but back in Bingley by 1817. She came from a Catholic family, so maybe had a Catholic burial, which will make the record more difficult to find...

Thanks!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Splash o' colour for Mr. & Mrs. Brabazon
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 14:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Attached are a couple of photos of my great-great-grandparents. I was hoping for a little colourisation for them. Perhaps a little tidy of gramps - got a few spots on the photo. Any one want to hazard a guess at the dates these were snapped? He was born 1853, she in 1857.

Cheers!

Hi all,

Could you give this one a touch up and a bit of colour?

Much appreciated!

Antrim / A. P. Brabazon of Carnmore, Co. Antrim
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

The following birth notice appeared in the Belfast News-Letter of 28 Sep 1847;
"On the 15th inst., at West-view, Mallow, the lady of Augustus Ponsonby Brabazon, Esq., of Carnmore, co. Antrim, of a daughter." This daughter was named Martha Ponsonby Brabazon, and her mother was Susanna Rebecca Johns (b. 1825, Mallow, Cork, daughter of Henry S. Johns & Martha Holland).

I am looking for any information on the father Augustus, anything at all, that could lead to his parents or any descendants.

Cheers,

Toban

United States of America / Elizabeth Nicholas in the U.S.A.
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 00:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This might be a bit of a long shot, but I'm stuck! One of my big brick walls has a significant crack in it now, and I'm hoping you can help bring it crumbling down.

In 1854 John & Elizabeth Richards and eight of their nine daughters came to Australia, leaving the eldest, Elizabeth, behind in England. None of the Australian descendants of the family I've been in contact with knew what became of her. Until now! The administration of John Richards' estate was claimed by a younger daughter in 1913, 39 years after his death, in which all the children who survive him are listed. The eldest, Elizabeth, is surnamed Nicholas and stated to have died in the United States at least ten years before 1913, though the applicant (her sister) could not recall the date or even the place of her death.

The most likely marriage for Elizabeth Richards is to Thomas Nicholas of Halsetown, which took place on 17 Aug 1854 in St. Ives, Cornwall. Even though Elizabeth's father John is stated to be a miner, when he was in fact a shoemaker, this is the only one that fits. The bride's age (26) is spot on, as Elizabeth Richards was baptised on 7 Oct 1827 in Uny Lelant, Cornwall.

I have no idea when Thomas & Elizabeth went to the States, only that Elizabeth died there apparently in or before 1903.

Hopefully, someone brilliant will be able to figure out what happened to her!

Cheers,

T

Gloucestershire / St. Augustine the Less, Bristol, marriage records
« on: Sunday 05 June 16 01:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can access the registers for the above church and check the details of a marriage for me. I can see that FamilySearch have them online, but you need to be a member of the LDS church to access them, which I am not. If anyone here is and can have a look for me, that would be great!

The parties involved were James Drabble and Catherine Johns, and the marriage took place on 14 Jan 1828. I am particularly interested in the witnesses, but also the marital status and place of residence of the two.

Hoping someone can help!

Cheers,

Hi all,

Hopefully this should be fairly straightforward. The clerk of Great Dunham in Norfolk in the 1730s left a few little titbits about some of the village's residents in the register and I was hoping to have a bit of help to decipher the attached entry, regarding John Hun who was buried there on 4 Jan 1737/8. I have been able to make out a fair amount of it, but would like to know what it all says!

Cheers,

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Windus/Gilbert of the Isle of Wight
« on: Wednesday 25 May 16 05:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm looking for the family of George Windus & Mary Gilbert who were married at Newchurch, IoW on 9 Oct 1799. They had five children on the island (George, 1801; Harriet, 1804; Barnabus, 1805; Barnabus 1806; John, 1809) before they moved to Otterbourne in 'mainland' Hampshire where three more children followed (Mary Ann, 1812; William, 1816; and Ann, 1822). I know what happened to the eldest children, but not the youngest two - William & Ann.

William has been traced through the censuses to 1871, but then is lost (he lived in Otterbourne as a single man and is in the lunatic asylum, Fareham, in 1871 census). Haven't been able to find a record of his death.

Never found any indication of what happened to Ann.

I'm also looking for George & Mary's parents.
I suspect George's parents are Winnington Windus (who I want to claim just because of his name!) and Elizabeth Terrey who married in Brockenhurst in 1757.
Mary's parents I'm less certain of. I think they might be James & Mary Gilbert of Calbourne. This is because they had a son baptised Barnaby in 1780, and a rare name like that is a bit unlikely to pop up in both Gilbert and Windus families in close proximity to each other without a connection. James Gilbert of Calbourne left a will when he died in 1807 - if this is Mary's possible father, it may confirm my theory.

Many thanks in advance,

Other Countries / Wm Reid in India
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 00:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've just come across this newspaper notice, detailing a death in India

From the Aberdeen Journal of 6 June 1860:
DIED
At Calcutta, of cholera, on the 18th of April last, William Reid, aged 34 years, fourth son of the late James Reid, Shipmaster, Aberdeen.

I had no idea he went there, though he was a ship's carpenter, so it makes sense that he travelled. I'm wondering if there's any more information in the death/burial record and whether he had a wife or children.

Thanks IA!
