Yorkshire (West Riding) / HAWKINS family of Leeds
« on: Saturday 15 July 23 03:22 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

Francis Hawkins bc 1788-1791 in Ireland and enlisted in the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1801 he married Mary (perhaps Doolan/Dooling/Mullins??) (whose father name unknown atm) was also in the 5th Dragoons at an earlier time.

Francis was given a pension at his discharge in 1821.  His death occurred May of 1847 in Leeds.....but cannot find his burial.  Can someone help with the possiblity of Catholic records of that time.  I have found quite a number of C of E...but the Catholic records seem to be few and far between.

A little more information on the family .

The family were Catholics as mentioned - the first couple of children seemed to have been born in Ireland, but the other's in Leeds , and there are a number of the Hawkins family who were transported to Australia...among them a daughter Frances, James, Elisabeth and Jane at the time being!.  Frances (daughter) married into the Gavenlock family in Australia - but prior to that she also had an illegitimate daughter Mary Ann Hawkins/Dixon/Dickson - who was also transported to VDL in 1848 who married into my Foster family in Tasmania.

So any information regarding the Leeds Church records would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Cardiganshire / re: ELIZABETH DAVIES - LLANGRANOG, WALES
« on: Saturday 15 January 22 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I'm attaching a Will of Enoch Davies which says 'to my five dear children' then proceeds to name them....but when you get to Elizabeth does the " "  " " mean that she was Elizabeth Davies Thomas?  ::)

I was rather confused as if Elizabeth name was Davies and that Thomas & Mary Griffiths were separate couple? Mary Griffiths husband was named Thomas - but he married into the family, and no specific in-laws were mentioned in the Will only immediate family.  The Thomas Davies who was a child of Enoch had died in 1853 so he can probably be discounted.

Afternoon List

Have found an interesting piece of information in a Welsh newspaper of 1846 which says the following:

“Welshman” newspaper article 14th August 1846 -  TIVY AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION:   page 2.

BOUNTIES:  (there were others, but below has my interest)

To a Labourer who shall have brought up the greatest number of legitimate children without parochial relief to ENOCH DAVIES, LLANGRANOG.

This is my gggrandfather!!!   I was wondering if anyone knows what the 'bounty' would be for having all these kids who weren't on parish relief!.   ::)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John & Sarah FOSTER of HUNSLET, YORKSHIRE
« on: Monday 11 January 21 01:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi List,  looking for a marriage of the above couple.  1841 Census they are (BIC) and 1851 Census both born in Hunslet - (the same for their kids).

The information on a death for a Frederick Foster in Australia in 1903 has his parents as being John Foster & Fanny Greenwood* (*Fanny or Frances was the name of his wife's mother - Frances Hawkins/Dixon/Dickson - but it's the Greenwood name that might hold a clue......could it have been Sarah Greenwood?).  I cannot find any marriages in Hunslet for that time frame (eg 1810-1814?).

The first child Mary Foster was baptised in 1815 at St Mary's in Hunslet, and as both John & Sarah said they were born in Hunslet....I'm assuming they married there?.

Would anyone know if there is marriage information for that time still available for Hunslet or not please.

Kind regards

Sussex / Elizabeth AVERY of Piddinghoe and her non marriage of 1781?
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 00:13 BST (UK)  »
Morning everyone, have a question for someone who may have an answer to this!.

Elizabeth Avery had three lots of Banns called for her marriage to John Martin in Piddinghoe in July of 1781.  On the FS site it has their marriage as being the 22nd July 1781 (this was the last date of the Banns of Marriage) - but no actual marriage.

On the 24th October 1781 there is a baptism for the first child- John Avery born to Elizabeth Avery BB. (base born).

There are 9 kids born to Elizabeth Avery...the first four have either base born or bb after the names, but the last five only have their name and the mother's name - Elizabeth Avery.

When Robert Avery (the person I was interested in) married Charlotte Phillips formerly Presnell nee Harris in 1846...Robert gave his father's name as John Martin a Shepherd!.

So could anyone tell me what could have occurred as to not proceed with the marriage?  but then Elizabeth went on to have 9 kids (presumably) to John Martin anyway?  Could he have been married prior to his marriage to Elizabeth?? ???

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

Cheers

Australia / Catherine THOMAS died 1854- South Australia
« on: Monday 18 May 20 03:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi List,

Probably a long shot but the above Catherine Thomas died in 1854 aged 88 years and she is buried at West Terrace Cemetery. (buried with many others).

Catherine's death notice had the following:  'At the home of Mrs. Tanner of Gilles Street".....this death notice was in two newspapers the SA Register of November 1854 and Adelaide Observer of December 1854.

My question is....., is there anyway to find out who Mrs. Tanner was?

I don't know very much about S.A. resources, so any help would be appreciated to see if this lady was Mrs. Tanner (or I hope was a mistake printed ….. and it should be Mrs. Turner!).

Kind regards

South Africa / Isaac Bertram BARKER - Durban
« on: Monday 20 August 18 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi listers
Isaac Barker died in Durban Hospital in April 1904, aged 54 yrs. (info from FamilySearch).

Is there any newspapers BDM for Durban around this time?  I would like to see if there was an obit if possible.

As to why he was in South Africa at that time I have no idea, but of course I would like to know why!.

He was born in Tasmania Australia in 1849 to William Barker and Margaret Kelly, but he seems to have been in trouble with the law at various times.  He was in trouble with 'salting' a gold mine (in Tasmania),- and he seems to have disappeared to South Africa around this time, leaving his wife and of course the law behind!. His wife inserted a death notice in the Argus newspaper in Victoria Australia, so she had been informed of his death.

Any thoughts on how to go about finding out any info on Isaac would be appreciated.
