Completed Census Requests / 1841
« on: Monday 16 May 05 17:01 BST (UK)  »
i know this is supposed to be 1851-1901 but i was hoping somebody could answer me a question.

on the sheffield 1841 Jonas WHITAKER down as being born in county what does that mean?

I think the person was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire and Sheffield is South Yorkshire but both were classed as West Riding, so is that my answer?

The Common Room / Finding maiden name
« on: Monday 14 March 05 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'd really like to get a marriage certificate for 2 couples, but  i dont know the womens maiden name or year of marriage.

I wondered if anyone had any genius ideas how i could find out.

I have searched ancestry and couldn't find anything that fit.

The first is:
William WHITAKER b.1823 Keighley
Mary Ann ?? b.1821 Sheffield
Their first child was born in 1848 Sheffield.
I have the family on 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1991 census Sheffield.

The second is:
William LYALLS b.1819 Sheffield
Hannah ?? b.1823 Sheffield
Their first child was born in 1851
Again i have the family on the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census Sheffield.

I'd appreciate any help  :)

The Common Room / different ages on census
« on: Monday 06 December 04 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
on 3 different census i have 3 different dates of birth for one person.

1871 census: Hannah HUDSON aged 68  (b.1803)

Highlow (Lordship) 1871 census :Hannah HUDSON aged 88 (b.1783)

1881 census: Hannah HUDSON aged 89 (b.1792)

Its definately the same lady, the grandmother of John HUDSON and lived in the same house throughout.

Just wondered if anybody had any ideas on this. Why its so messed up and if there's a way to find her correct d.o.b

Derbyshire / HUDSON Hathersage
« on: Monday 06 December 04 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking to find out more about Hannah HUDSON who was born in Stoney middleton, Derbyshire.

On the 1871 census she was showed to be living at: 6 Lead Mills, Hathersage aged 68 which shows she was b.1803 Stoney Middleton

Living here with her was John HUDSON, gson aged 27, Charlotte HUDSON, gdaur aged 24, Alice HUDSON, g gdaur aged 2, Walter HUDSON, g gson aged 1.

On the 1881 census she's living with the same grandson John HUDSON (now the head) at same address with many more children. but Hannah HUDSON on here is down as 89 years old...b.1792 Stoney Middleton.

Any help much appreciated

The Common Room / name change
« on: Thursday 02 December 04 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
on my gg grandads marriage certificate 1886 he's named as john thomas CROWDER married clara LYALLS.

on the 1891 census he's down as thomas hy CROWDER but its definately him because the dates are right and also claras mother hannah LYALLS was living with them.

I was wondering did name change have to be done in a legal way like now or could you just wake up and say right today i'm gonna be called thomas hy
