Lanarkshire / Archibald Kerr - can he be found?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 00:57 GMT (UK)  »
Archibald Kerr a Joiner or Wright of Glasgow died 24 Feb 1808. He was a creditor in the Campbell Ruthven and Lyndsay debacle. Can any kind person find any records of him, his death, grave, details of his business or his birth. As you can see I have very little except for his date of death and believe there must be some journals or directories that will have him mentioned.

Many thanks.

Renfrewshire / Kerr & Co, Greenock
« on: Monday 07 January 08 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
After many months of searching and with the superb help from other Rootschat members my task has grown by a factor of 10. Archibald Kerr died in 1808 and settlement of his claim against Campbell Ruthven and Lindsay was not until much later. Records show that an Archibald Kerr and his brother John operated substantial businesses in Greenock and Newfoundland. Again after much legal jiggery pokery and doubtful dealings a new co of Kerr and Co sprung up. Are they the same Archibald and John as mine and was it Robert Kerr, John's son who became a sugar dealer owner of the Glebe Refinery in Ker St. Kerr & Co in Newfoundland became a substantial ship owner even with their own house flag. Can anyone help me identify who Archibald and John were.
My Archibald born around 1762, John 1770 and Robert 1819. The key is in the parents. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Renfrewshire / Where oh where can he be?
« on: Monday 17 December 07 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
Archibald Kerr married Rachel Thomson in Greenock in 1790 he died in Glasgow Feb. 1808. Who were his parents? His siblings? Where did they live? What did he die of? Where is he buried? Here I am in New Zealand and not a chance of finding the answers. This is a cry for help before I go round the twist.

Lanarkshire / A Grave concern
« on: Tuesday 11 December 07 19:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me? I'm looking for Archibald Kerr a joiner or wright. Died 24 Feb. 1808 in Glasgow or maybe not.
I am looking for his grave, probably a church yard given the period and the clue as I see it is to find where he lived. I think he was in business so a Trade Directory might help or were there Postal records kept at that time. He was the husband of Rachel Thomson.

The Common Room / Affleck - What's in a name?
« on: Friday 30 November 07 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
There is a line in my family where Affleck is used as the given name of their sons. Given that it is a little unusual chances are if any have this name in their 'Trees' we could be related. Love to hear from you.
