Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Odiham Baptisms - Baldwin/Barlow
« on: Wednesday 18 June 14 01:22 BST (UK)  »
I have my gt. grandmothers birth certificate. Her name was Ellen Sophia Baldwin (father James Baldwin, mother Sophia Baldwin nee Silver) born 08 Aug 1863, Odiham.

I've recently purchased the Hampshire Baptism records CD from HGS. On it, the only 'suitable' matching record for an Ellen Sophia, daughter of a James & Sophia in Odiham is one on 18 Sep 1863. Trouble is, the parents surname is given as Barlow!

For myself, I can't see how Baldwin could be mistranscribed as Barlow!

I don't know if I'm being cheeky (I've never made a look-up request before) but I wondered if anyone was going to Winchester and could clarify this for me?

Thanks for reading this,

Tim

The Common Room / UK 1966 mini census
« on: Friday 06 September 13 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've just discovered that in 1966 the UK conducted a mini census (10% sample - full in Northern Ireland).

What I haven't, so far, been able to discover was its purpose.

Anyone know?

The Common Room / How to correctly record/introduce new family name?
« on: Friday 09 August 13 21:01 BST (UK)  »
First of all, not been on here for a while but I like the new look.

My daughter recently got married. Both she and her husband have now adopted the surname of Silver-Burr (obviously, my daughter was the Silver and her partner the Burr).

I've not got a problem recording this in my written tree but I cannot find a way of doing it in any of the software packages I use.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Census and Resource Discussion / An Ancestry/FTM question - how do they know?
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 19:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Not sure I know how to compose this question and keep your attention!

Anyway, I use FTM and it is 'linked' to my online Ancestry tree. When I follow the 'hints' for a particular individual, Ancestry/FTM always suggests a only one spouse for a possible 1896 marriage.

However, if one looks this marriage up on FreeBMD (Sep 1896 Hartley W. 2c 367) then there are two females and two males. So how does Ancestry makes it's decision?

Following up the possibilities, I searched for my 2nd cousin 3x removed (using both potential surnames) in the 1901 census. But from my logic, her possible husband is not the one that Ancestry suggests!

So, does anyone know how Ancestry makes its hints/assumptions?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Potbridge - is there a stream/brook called Pot(t)
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Just to the west of Winchfield is an area called Potbridge. I believe that a large portion of it is now under the M3. Potbridge is shown on OS maps but you'll not find it using Google Maps.

On a 1759 map of Hampshire, surveyed by Isaac Taylor, there is a place called 'Pott' (very near a stream - but it's not named) and a stones throw away is 'Baridge Pillers'. So it's not hard to see how the names may have combined and slowly corrupted (or am I just being fanciful?).

However, I've been to the area several times but I've not found a river/stream/brook called 'Pot(t)' - just wondered if anyone had more in-depth local knowledge?

Occupation Interests / How to research a 'Newsman' with surname Clifford?
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've found an 1841 census record that may be relevant to my 4x gt. grandfather William Clifford. His occupation is given as 'Newsman'.

Trouble is, all the search phrases I've put into Google are over-shadowed by Max Clifford!!!!!

Any suggestions for 'unique' search phrases?

The Common Room / Was he born 1821 or 1823?
« on: Monday 02 January 12 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

First of all - happy new year!

A 3x gt. grandfather of mine, Richard Baldwin.

I have both his death and marriage certs.

Oh! And now I'm getting stuck as to how to compose my question! I'll try to be succinct.

'41 - age 18 (est. yob 1823)
'51 - age 29 (est. yob 1822)
'61 - age 40 (est. yob 1821)

Death (28 Sep 1865) age 43 (est. yob 1822).

On both ancestry and FamilySearch there is a baptism for a Richard Baldwin in Cholsey on 02 Mar 1823 with parents David and Hannah Baldwin.

I could happily go with this baptism, other than that, when he married in January 1841 (5 months before the census [sorry to teach my grandmother how to suck eggs]) he says he's 20! To add to my dilemma, there is no fathers name given on the marriage cert!

Can I afford to let the romantic side of me dismiss this descrepancy and use the baptism record, or should I stick to my guns and insist that, since I can't prove this, I let the line end with Richard?

What would you do?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1910 Passenger lookup request
« on: Monday 24 October 11 21:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I would very much like to know the date and name of vessel that an R M Silver left London bound for Albany, WA in 1910. He was born 1863.

I think it likely that the ship sailed in November as it arrived Albany 08 Jan 1911.

The Common Room / How do you politely correct someone's info?
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I use Ancestry quite a lot and of course I explore the 'hints'.

When you find a 'hint' that's in someone's tree and you explore it and know for sure they've got it wrong, how do you approach them to correct it? What is the polite way to say "I'm sorry but you've got this wrong"?
