London and Middlesex / Aldridge
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there people...

Please could I have a little assistance in marrying up Hampshire, Suffolk and Edinburgh, Scotland with a touch of London!!!

Mary Aldridge1842-1891 was b Southampton, Hants  Her mother is Mary Burrett [possibly Barrett.]
Mary's father is George Aldridge bapt Eling, Hants 1813.

In 1841 the family is in Marchwood, Hampshire with
George aged 25 b in county and Mary 30 b out of county
George aged 3 b 1837 out of county [George Senior states he is a soldier on Junior's baptism.] and Eliza aged 1 b Scotland.

In 1851 we find the family in Paddington with
George 38 b Eling Hants    [Mary Senior has completely disappeared]    with Wife Ann  36 b Portobello, Scotland
George 13 b Suffolk, Eliza 11 b Portobello, Mary 9 b All Saints Southampton and Chartotte 3 b Greenland, Scotland  [Greenland is near Inverness, nowhere near Edinburgh]

In 1861 Charlotte aged 14  in St Pancras states she is born in Edinburgh

George had three wives... Mary, [pre 37??]   Ann [post 42 pre 56 ] and Rebecca Sharman Potter nee Forder Jul 56.

What I am after
1.  The date and location of Mary Burrett/Barrett's birth, her marriage to George Aldridge [presumably sometime in the 1830s] and the date and location of her death after 13 Jun 1842 when Mary was born.
2.  The date and location of the marriage, presumably in Scotland of George to Ann and the date and location of her subsequent death.
3    Who is Charlotte's mother??

Thank you very much in anticipation

Best wishes
Mark

Hi folks.
I am trying to trace this man's Army career in the DLI and subsequently the Devonshires.

I have notes that state he was born in Poona, India, his father being in 2DLI and allegedly enlisted in  2DLI as 6841 Bugler Ord B. after they returned to the UK.
The date given is 1898, when he would have been 10 years old!!

Served in South Africa 1900-02 awarded Boer War "South Africa1902" and "Cape Colony", then returned to India.

In 1906 he entered man's service joining the 4th Batt. Devonshire Regiment with Army No 8102, returning sometime before WW1.

He was awarded Mons Star with Rosette.

He was supposedly promoted  to become the youngest RSM in the Army.
A field commission to captain followed in 1916.

Severely wounded at the Battle of the Somme and posted home to hospital.

In 1917 on recovery he was seconded to the Machine Gun Corps and saw more action in France, before returning to the Devonshires and off to Mesopotamia.

He was awarded an MBE in 1919 and was retired o the Reserve of officers as substantive captain.

In 1939 he volunteered and was posted to the RE and the Railway Training Battalion in Derby as a major.
In 1941 he was posted as a half colonel to Gareloch as commandant of the Military Port.
In 1943  he was sent back to play with trains again in Petersfield, Hants as commandant.

In 1946, he was invalided out after an operation on his gallstones as substantive Lieutenant Colonel.

If true this is one hell of a life!!!

I can find no Army docs on Ancestry to substantiate any of this, apart from his Birth, Marriage and Death!!

There are numerous docs concerning his father, a Sergeant in the 2 DLI.

Thank you and Best wishes

Hello everybody
I have a small problem with dating this photograph!!!
The young lady out front was born in 1928!!!
Her brother was born ten years later in 38!!!
Toffee on the left was born 1912 and won an MC in WW2 with SOE
Next to him was born 1913
Far right, was born in 1903.
I think it HAS to be post-war, but the young lady CANNOT be 17.

My thanks in advance

Best wishes to you all and love to those who know me!!!!

Lincolnshire / MALTBY HANGING IN LINCOLNSHIRE
« on: Thursday 30 March 17 18:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello there, folks
Bit of a dilemma.
I am doing some research for a friend, who insists that a member of his Maltby family was hanged in Lincolnshire. He thinks this was around 1800.
Not only am I unable to find such a hanging in Lincolnshire, or anywhere for that matter, I am unable to trace his line into Lincolnshire at all.
Solid in Nottinghamshire, in Souhwell and Hoveringham, where they are prolific in 17th 18th centuries.
If anyone can help in any way, I'd be much obliged
.
Thank you.
Best wishes to you all
