The Common Room / Soap agent and oil miller
« on: Monday 08 March 10 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
I've been looking for an Edmund Johnson oil miller from I think West Yorks. All I can find is an Edmund R soap agent in Leeds. Can this be the right trade I know oil is required in soap making and I cannot find anything else that matches. Edmund should have a daughter but I can't find her either because I don't think she uses the name she was given at birth she is an Azubah on her marriage cert but she is not registered in that name for a birth. You would think that name would be easy to find but it is not. Cheers for any thoughts BEN

Travelling People / Searching for William Sykes
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for anything or anyone who has come across a William Sykes Equestrian, strong man, clown and General showman he was born in London in 1827 and married Louisa Cullen or Culine in 1862. We have info on him and Louisa performing and traveling till 1871 and then we lose them. In 1891 Louisa is a widow. We do not know what happened to William in those years or when or where he died. As you can imagine they moved around a bit and somtimes performed under the name of Edwards.

So if you have run into the name or seen it in a paper clipping or in the course of your research then please let me know. We would be really grateful for any new leads. BEN

The Common Room / 19th centuary papers
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 21:24 BST (UK)  »
My relative who has been doing her family tree for a while now has found a way of getting the Era and quite a few other papers for free. We found if you go to the Lancashire liberary web site and join online just pick any of the branches I chose Colne. They give you a temporary membership number. You can use it to access 19th centuary newspapers online. They will send you a membership card in a week or so. You can search these records online for free. I found loads of references to my family in showmans world. Give it a go free is the best word in the English language!!!!!!!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sutcliffe, McGuire, Stewart, Potts leeds mid-late 1800
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi just a general call out for any info on a few people that married into my family in the 1800's.

First is Joseph Sutcliffe mar Hannah Crowther 1876 Bradford. He and a daughter appear as witnesses on marriage certs I have. The daughter or relation of theirs is a Sarah Elizabeth Sutcliffe.

Secondly Harriet Ann Crowther married Micheal McGuire 1886 Leeds and their daughter Caroline is with a relative of mine at their lodging house in East st Leeds in 1901.

Thirdly my gggrandma Ann Eliza Stewart came from the family of Charles Stewart and Sarah Ann. I have found them in 1881 in Leeds Upper cornhill and at the marriage they were at High st Leeds but before and after that I cannot find them. Charles is down as a mechanic as is his son Yarry (I think someone has got the name wrong) also sisters Elizabeth and Magrett and Ada.

Lastly Mary Ann Crowther mar William Potts 1846 Leeds and their son appears with my ggggrandad in 1881 at his pub in Leeds. The son's name was Benjamin Potts bn 1860. Again I have not been able to pin them down after that.

If any one has a bit of info on any of these people or families I would appreciate it! It would go a way to beef out my family tree and maybe through up a few leads. Cheers BEN

Louth / Lookup or advice required JOHNSON
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 16:32 BST (UK)  »
HI one of my ancestors Edward Johnson appears on the 1881 census of England as being born in Louth Ireland. He was married in 1871 in Leeds parish church to a Leeds girl and his father is on the marriage cert. as an Edward as well (provisions dealer). He is down as 21 years old so he was born about 1850 give or take a year. I've found two Irish lads William and Edward Johnson (cloth drapers) in Leeds on the 1861 census I think it's him and maybe a brother. Could someone from their part of the world look the johnsons up or maybe give me advice on looking in Ireland! I don't want to be booking my flight to Ireland if there is nothing to find!!
