Derry (Londonderry) / Looking for Marriage 29th May 1906
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Searching for a marriage record of Hugh McLaughlin to Ellen Mailey 29th May 1906, Limavady, Co Londonderry, Ireland.
On Scotlands People birth of Susan McLaughlin 23rd June 1907 Greenock to above names which is where I’ve picked up marriage details from. Unable to find marriage in my searches on Irish sites.
Ellen McLaughlin born Greenock 25 Nov 1908 and parents listed marriage as same date.
Ellen McLaughlin nee Mailey dies in Greenock aged 39 25th June 1921. Her parents listed as Joseph Mailey (deceased) and Ellen nee Connor (deceased).
Am trying to locate info on who Hugh McLaughlin’s parents might be?

On Scotlands People 1921 census,
Hugh aged 46 from Co. Derry Dunled (?)
Ellen aged 39, Limavady
Susan aged 14, Greenock
Ellen aged 13, Greenock
Charles aged 9, Co Derry Coleraine
Joseph, aged 5, Greenock
Hugh aged 1, Greenock

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Name on Marriage Entry
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 09:29 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning
Anyone able to assist with Father's first name on marriage of Mary Ann McLoughlin to Michael McLarey in 1877 in Limavady, Northern Ireland?
Mary's Father's name - Is it an abbreviation? Tried searching other marriages of McLoughlin's or McLaughlin's around same time in case there was a sibling.
Many thanks

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this - looking for information on where Robert Kelly went after 1937. Robert Edward Kelly b1900 to William Kelly (born Dublin) and Annie Kate Barnes (born England). Lots of siblings all born Dublin. Robert is my great grandfather on maternal side.

Robert married Alice Fitzgerald in Dublin in 1922, many children all born Dublin. I think he left Dublin sometime around 1937 to go to Coventry or similar area to look for work. He died in England in early 1960s, possibly 1963.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Renfrewshire / Neilston Manse - why this address on 1851 Ancestry census
« on: Monday 31 October 11 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have gone to check an entry on the 1851 census for some one and I am not sure of what the census address actually means.

The entry they have is on ancestry is for a Joel Harkin aged 27 in Neilston in 1851 at Neilston Manse. He is a travelling cloth dealer.

I have gone to Barrhead Library and looked through the microfilm of the census; the first section of the census definitely is the Manse with the minister of the parish living there, 6 people at the Manse itself. Then there is clearly a thick line under it and it continues with lots of other entries, which to me mean a new address. But there are no other addresses just pages and pages of names separated by thick black lines. Joel Harkin's entry is quite a bit further down the census from the Manse.

Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

Lanarkshire / HOWATT middle name in Alexander family - why?
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have been helping a friend with their family tree and I am stuck as to why the name HOWATT appears as a middle name on a particular generation of the Alexander family. I have downloaded alot of certificates from SP but I was wondering if anyone as any ideas. Sorry this is a long post.

In 1931 in Cathcart Harry James Emil Hill marries Isabella Howatt Alexander. A few of Isabella's siblings also have the name HOWATT but I can't figure out why.

Isabella was born in 1911 to a Samuel Alexander (sometimes appears as Samuel Frederick Taylor Alexander) and Elizabeth Aitchison. Samuel and Elizabeth married in 1899 in Dunbar.

Elizabeth was born as Betsy Gibson Aitchison in 1879 to Hugh Aitchison and Margaret Gibson. They married in 1874; Margaret's parents listed as Daniel Gibson and Elizabeth Hall.

Samuel Alexander was born in 1866 in Govan and was the son of Samuel Alexander and Agnes Taylor. Agnes Taylor died 1869 and her parents were listed as John Taylor and Margaret McLuckie.

Samuel Alexander snr remarries in 1871 to a Agnes Crawford. On the marriage certificate Samuel's parents are listed as Thomas Alexander and Isabella Devine. Agnes Crawford's parents listed as John Crawford and Elizabeth Robertson.

I have found Isabella Devine Alexander's death certificate in 1868 in Hutchesontown aged 70 years. Parents listed Peter Devine and Margaret McLintock.

In the 1851 census Thomas, Isabella and Samuel Alexander are all listed as being from Ireland. I can't find Thomas' death but he is deceased by 1868.

I can't find a mention of Howat anywhere.

Thanks

Renfrewshire / Barrhead - old and odd notes
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 21:24 BST (UK)  »
hello

I hope no one minds but I have collected some odd bits and pieces of information over the years on Barrhead whilst rummaging through old newspapers; I am tidying up and rather than just bin everything, if I think it may be of interest to some one at some point, I will jot it down here. If they are too dull just let me know!

MR ALEX YOUNG

Source: Glasgow Post May 1850

“Barrhead – Soiree & Presentation – The block printers in the employ of Messrs Glen & McIndoe’s printwork, Gateside, held a soiree in honour of Mr Alex Young, in Mr Gillis’s  hall, Barrhead on the 26th April.

Mr Andrew King, who acted as chairman, in a few appropriate remarks, introduced Mr Robert Muir, who in a neat and eloquent address presented Mr Young with a pair of silver spectacles and a silver mounted walking stick, which bore the following inscription; “Presented by the printers of Gateside to Mr Alex Young, on entering his 63rd year as a block printer, and also as a mark of their esteem for him as a man and a member of their trade”. Mr Young in his reply, stated, in speaking of his age, that he had now completed eleven years of Sabbaths, which is a long age to be still working. Time seems, however, to have had no effect in cooling the better qualities of his nature, for his warm and generous disposition make him admired by all who know him. Suitable addresses were delivered by Mr Lindsay, Mr Farguhar & c., and Mr P McFarlane and Mr J Wilson sang several excellent songs. The party broke up about midnight, all highly entertained with the evening’s proceedings.”

Mulholland

“Notice

I will not be responsible for any debts my wife, Mrs Mulholland, or Catherine Kelly, may contract after this date.

Peter Mulholland
Cross Arthurlie, Barrhead, 31st May 1851.”

Barrhead News, Friday 7th July 1911

In the news section, the following:-

“By the death of Mr James Craig, blacksmith, which occurred at the residence of his son, Mr Thomas Craig, Main Street, Barrhead, last Friday, the burgh has lost its oldest resident. Mr Craig, whose age cannot be definitely stated, was long past his 90th birthday, and had for over sixty years actually followed his trade as a blacksmith. He was not a native of Barrhead but came to the town at a comparatively early age, and has been resident here for between sixty and seventy years. He was born in Bishopbriggs, where his father, who was a blacksmith, Cartwright and owner of the village inn, and also held the office of “bishop”, an office analogous to that of a constable elsewhere in those remote days. The deceased took a keen and intelligent interest in most things, but being of a retiring disposition, took no active part in public affairs. He had been retired from work for a good many years, but although confined to the house, his general health remained good, and he retained possession of his facilities until the last. He is survived by five sons and three daughters, but his partner in life, who was well known for her work in the temperance movement, predeceased him about seven years ago.”

Northumberland Lookup Requests / James Brash and Agnes Bertha Bayliss
« on: Saturday 19 June 10 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was wondering whether anyone had access to the marriage records for Newcastle-on-tyne for 1901.

I am trying help some one - I think there is a marriage between a James Brash and Agnes Bertha Bayliss in 1901 in Newcastle-on-tyne. The James I am looking for will be circa 28/29 and an electricial engineer. Could someone confirm this and any other detail available??

Do English marriage records give you the same detail as Scottish records? ie list both sets of parents.
James' parents are John Brash and Margaret Morrison. But we have no information on Bertha. She dies in Scotland in 1971 aged 91 years - but the records won't be available on line for many years yet.

I think James is on the 1901 census in Elswick.

Any help much appreciated -
Murphyz

Renfrewshire / Old St John's Graveyard Barrhead
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi there - I went to the old St John's Graveyard (now in the Columba Club car park) today - it is in an extremely sorry state and very few readable or standing stones remain. Even since last winter, the graveyard has deteriorated terribly.

I hope no one minds but before they are disappear, I will jot down over the next couple of weeks what's still there - but many of the stones are worn away so apologies if the dates aren't 100%. If anyone recognises a mistake, please feel free to update my scribbles.

RIDDELL

The stone is still standing - at the back of the graveyard towards the wall, facing towards the Columba Club building. Worn and unreadable in parts.
