Could someone please restore this photo to black and black and make it look like 1920s?  Thanks.

Ireland Resources / birth in 1934, can I get a certificate?
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 15:43 GMT (UK)  »
Well, the title says it all. I can't seem to find the info online. Birth registered in Galway in 1934. Will the GRO give me a research copy?

Technical Help / printing part of an image
« on: Friday 16 September 16 07:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm researching Irish births and deaths and using the images recently put on line by the National Archives of Ireland.
When I find an ancestor on a page I zoom in to read it properly, but if I want to print it, it gives me the whole page - well, two pages actually, you know the ones of a ledger opened and laid out.

-how can I print the part I'm interested in so I can actually read it?
-is there a way of printing without all that black background behind the ledger (using too much ink)?

I'm sure there is an easy fix, I'm just not very good at this kind of thing.
thanks a lot.

Scotland / marriage of kelly-rodden
« on: Wednesday 14 September 16 07:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi, this is my first bit of Scottish research and could do with some help.
Can anyone find a marriage between Elizabeth Kelly and a Rodden (Rudden?) sometime between 1901 and 1914?
Elizabeth was born in 1880 and in the 1901 Irish census she is still at home in Monaghan with her parents and sister Sarah.
The death certificate for her father Patrick in 1914 lists her as 'Elizabeth Rodden, daughter of the deceased, address Portland Place Brigton Glasgow'.
I've looked for that marriage on the Irish sites but haven't come up with anything. It's possible she married in Scotland.
Thanks.

Monaghan / children of Kelly/Duffy
« on: Sunday 11 September 16 15:38 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather George Kelly was born in Castleblaney Monaghan October 10th 1864. I have his birth cert and his parents were Patrick Kelly and Elizabeth Duffy.
I want to find out who his siblings were (although I may be on a wild goose chase).  Searching on various sites for births to these parents between 1855 and 1880 I have come up with six possibilities - George October 1864
Mary May 1865 (bit too close?)
Sarah May 1867
Ellen August 1867  (problem here!)
Patrick June 1871
Elizabeth April 1880

In the 1901 census there is a Patrick Kelly and Elizabeth Kelly in Drumore Monaghan living with their two daughters Sarah and Lissy.  The parents state they have had 6 children and they are all still living.

But they can't be the six I found can they, because of clashes in the dates of birth. Is there any point in me going on with this, or something I'm missing?
I would be grateful for comments.
By the way, George left Ireland for England when he was in his twenties. He married and died in England.

Ireland / refund from Bank of Ireland
« on: Wednesday 14 October 15 11:23 BST (UK)  »
I took advice from someone on here and enclosed a 5 euro note in my request for a research copy of a cert from the records office. Got the cert quickly, that was about 2 months ago.
Today I got a cheque from the Bank of Ireland for 1 euro because of overpayment.
Have to admire the honesty.
I think I'll frame it.

Ireland / Ballinger in Galway - problems with RootsIreland searches.
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 06:31 BST (UK)  »
Both Ancestry and Family Search give me a death in the Civil Registrations for a Bridget Ballinger April-June 1879 in Mountbellew, Galway, age 64 (vol 4 page 300).
Why does RootsIreland not give me this do you think?  Is it just a matter of spelling?  I've got a one month subscription on there and I've been trying to find it with variations but it doesn't come up. (I'd like to find it there so I can see the details without having to send off to the GRO for a copy.)

And while I'm at it, Roots used to let you do a search using only surnames didn't it? Something like all births/deaths/marriages in a county in a certain period. Now they want a first name every time. Is this what other people remember?

Armed Forces / Ballinger in the Royal Artillery Ireland
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 06:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I was given this information by Gortonboy in the Ireland forum here:

Name:Thomas BALLINGER
Year of birth:1839
Place of birth:Cathry, Ballinasloe, Galway
Regiment:Royal Artillery

How would I go about getting this record?  I'm certainly looking for a Thomas Ballinger who was in the army in Ireland and who died in 1874. Not sure that the townland is spelled correctly, I can't find it in Galway.  Any pointers greatly appreciated!

Technical Help / nli records safe site?
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 06:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been working my way through the Catholic parish records without a problem. This morning my Webroot security is posting a big black and red page saying the site has been reported as unsafe with risk of phishing and advises me strongly to get off the site.
I must say I've often found Irish sites listed as not completely trustworthy, don't know why. But this is different, it's one of those messages that says continue at your peril.
Is anyone else having trouble with this?
