Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Portsea Hampshire Adams & Chapman families
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 15:20 BST (UK)  »
I have Hugh Adams born 1816 in Portsea who married Amelia Chapman on 29 May 1836 at St Marys (source is a public family tree - so not 'proved'). I understand that she was also born in Portsea in 1819.

I am trying to confirm both births and the marriage, and if possible the parents of both. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hollybrook Hospital Southampton -where was it ?
« on: Wednesday 12 September 12 15:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find this as I have a death certificate for a lady who died there in 1941. She died of TB which may or may not be relevant.
I don't know Southampton at all, am researching for an older friend who wants to revisit the city she was born in back in the 1930s & find out where her Mum died.

Devon / JOHNS family of Bondleigh/ North Tawton
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Have at last found my ggg grandmother's maiden name and marriage details, and that is where I am stuck.

She was Mary Johns, married Thomas Berry (of Crediton) in North Tawton in 1810. From later censuses I know she came from Bondleigh aka Bundley and born around 1790.

If anyone has any Johns family around Bondleigh to point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.

Devon / Non-conformist burials Woodbury/ East Devon
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 14:22 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the burial place of Thomas Berry who died at Woodbury in 1881. His parents and various other relatives are buried in St Swuthin's churchyard which is C of E. His father died in 1883 and mother in 1882. But I can't find Tom there.

When his wife Harriet (nee Sanders) died in 1907 she was buried in the non-conformist part of Dawlish cemetery, they married in Exeter register office so I wonder if he had left the C of E and been buried in non-conf place.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the ones around that area in those days? Thanks

Devon / Newton Abbot Registry Office 1870s
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 14:04 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where the Newton Abbot Registry Office would have been in 1876? I believe it is now at Forde House. My ggrandparents married there and I am curious.

Devon / Exmouth Withycombe Mill
« on: Sunday 27 February 11 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in the (demolished) mill at Withycombe/Marpool near Exmouth. The old mill wheel in part of a floral display near the Esplanade and was made by Berry and Son of Woodbury.

My gggrandfather was Abraham Berry, and my ggrandfather was his son Tom. Tom died in 1881 and Abraham in 1883. I am assuming that the wheel was built by them, but I'd like to confirm it. Perhaps someone can tell me some of it's history, and when the wheel might have been put in place. I understand the Long family ran the mill until the 1960s. Its the only tangible thing I have touched from their foundry/agricultural works and I'd like to know some more.

Berkshire / Thatcham Paynes/Northcroft
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am still trying to find more of my gggf Job(aka John) Payne and his family. He was born in Thatcham  around 1804(though in one census is it transcribed as Botch Thatcham is that a place or a mistake?).

He went to India with the Honourable East India Company's army in 1825 and came back around 1846 to Newbury and then retired to Dawlish, Devon.

His parents were William Pain and Sarah Northcroft who married Feb 1791 at Thatcham. Siblings were Harriet, George, Mariah & William. I think Harriet married a bricklayer called Thomas Bennett of Newbury., but other than that the family is a blank page in my family history records. If anyone can help with Payne/Pain/Payn or Northcroft ancestors I'd be grateful.

Devon / Where are/where these places in Exeter?
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to locate two places where my great grandmother Frances Payne (nee Holmes) lived before she married. They are both in Exeter, the first is Trinity Street and the second is Salutary Place, St Sidwells.

I suspect these places are no longer in existence maybe as a result of the Blitz or development. When I worked in Exeter a few years ago in Southernhay there was a building that used to be a church/chapel at the Southgate Hotel end of Southernhay/South St. I believe it had been Trinity church at one time, so maybe Trinity St was around there near the city wall.

I can't find either in books that I have on Exeter history, so if anyone out there know where they are or where it would help me greatly in compiling my family history. I live in Torbay so a day trip to Exeter in the springtime wouldn't be a problem. Thanks

Occupation Interests / Devon Policemen 1880s
« on: Monday 07 February 11 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
My ggrandad William John Payne was a PC in the Devon Constabulary joining in 1878 and retiring around 1906. I have found him on the census for 1881,1891,1901 as the force records don't tell where he was stationed.
Having visited the places that he lived I am interested in the practicalities of his working life and welcome any ideas on sites/book/sources.
I am particularly interested about his time on the edge of Dartmoor at Ashwater which is south of Holsworthy and near the Cornish border at Launceston.
What would his daily routine have involved in such an out of the way spot, how far would his patch extend etc? I assume he'd have his own horse (and cart/carriage), I don't know if that part of the world was a hotbed of vice in those days.
He moved to Torquay between 1881 and 1891 and lived out the rest of his days here where the family still lives. Any musings on his lifestyle etc would help a lot in my attempts to write up my family story.
