Lancashire / John Axon family history and wartime service
« on: Friday 25 November 16 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya ll
My problems starts with a family Axon.  I know that John Axon bachelor aged 17, married
Gladys Bickerdye Lindley spinster aged 17, Jan 18 1930 at St Thomas's Church Hyde, Cheshire.
John Axon, a Labourer, living at 2 Manor Street Audenshaw – Father Henry Axon, a Moulder.
Gladys Bickerdyke Lindley, 15 Charles Street Hyde, Cheshire- Father Joseph Findley Dec's.
John and Gladys have three children, John Joyce and Harry, details all known.
That is all I have at present.  I think I have pieced together Gladys past on the Bickerdyke side, but with John Axon I have hit an absolute brick wall.  All I have is family fireside rumours and handed down tales, no concrete evidence.  Frustrating.  I can find no trace of John Axon prior to the marriage or afterwards, some maybes, nothing concrete in censuses or BDMs.
Rumours
John Axon and a brother Harry were born in Wales?  John Axon went missing Xmas day before war ended in 1944?  Friends of family heard he was on an Atlantic convoy when he joined a party which went missing, a secret mission on a convoy to Zanzibar supplying ammunition to Montgomery's war in Africa???  The family state that there are medals to be awarded?  Because it was a secret mission, one way ticket??  Obtained from  Archives, BT382CRS1..Docket Books..Record of Seamen Records BT390??
The above all sounds very dramatic though stranger things etc! I'm told I cannot access the above records on line.  Can anyone access the Archive down south as a look up?
OK - any clues as to how I proceed would be much appreciated.
The Axon family are I think loosely related to mine through an unofficial liaison on the Bickerdyke side, complicated, no payment to me is involved. Expenses no problem.
Thanks everyone for looking & reading

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Computer Software
« on: Saturday 25 June 16 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi Y'all
Can anyone advise me as to the best computer software I should buy to help preserve a multitude of my fathers WW1 and WW2 photographs he took.  Many are taken with his box camera leaving small photos about 2" x 1.1/4" and smaller all B&W and Sepia.  Many others obtained from other sources during the wars, mostly WD.  I have a load of normal post war family colour photos as well.
I have a good scanner capable of up to 9600 dpi saving to file. I need the software to carry out:-
Enlargement up to A4, resolution, contrast, brightness. crop, and other basic stuff like scratch, focus etc.  Definitely no fancy stuff needed like changing backgrounds say from blue sky to a mill pond background from a library of such, changing colours in particular places, putting a face onto body etc etc.

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry

Has everyone noticed that the standard Ancestry is now giving an abbreviated version of Ancestry world information. Very useful as a quick kickstart.  Punch up your green leaf hints and you get some World info, or at least I did.  You could also use the free access in your local county centre Archives.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Completed Requests / Holme Valley flood 1852
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My first post relates to some family fire side chat regarding an Eastwood family member of mine, a Whisk Manufacturer of Netherthong.  It was claimed a baby was found by the Eastwoods floating down the Holme, in the flood waters, in a chest of drawers.  The baby was saved and then adopted or taken in, any of the baby's family having perished in the flood. There are reasons I could go into to suggest the veracity of the tale?  My query is - was there a list of all the unclaimed, families unknown, infants unable to speak for themselves registered with the authorities and perhaps put up for adoption etc?  I can find no evidence that the Eastwood baby was ever legally adopted - or was the whole valley in turmoil and people simply acted altruistically?
Regards to all
