Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Winns Crest / Nostell Priory
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 13:20 BST (UK)  »
I wanted to know whether a family can just ' use '  a crest on coaches and engravings on spoons or do they need to prove their connection with a certain Winn family / person  ... the reason I ask is that I have Winn family from North Yorkshire and my family has in its possession two silver spoons dated about 1781 by Hester Bateman with the Winn insignia [ an eagle or phoenix with no crown ]  I know the Winns of Nostell Priory used this as their crest but I can find no connection to this family ... my Winns originated from Thornton Steward / Bedale  area of Yorkshire and I have gone back as far as 1560s.

Hope someone can help explain what is the deal with crests ?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Help cant find Thomas in 1841 census
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I cant seem to find Thomas Scarrott in 1841 census . Thomas was born 3rd May 1840 in Birmingham . His birth is registered as Thomas Scarrott Julian . His mother is Sarah Julian [ nee Sumner ] born Colston Bassett in 1811 and his father was Thomas Scarrott born Birmingham 1820 . Both mother and father I have found in 1841 but no 1 year old Thomas .
I found him living with his grandparents Thomas [ born 1786 ] & Mary scarrott [ transcribed wrongly as scarrow in 1851 but in 1841 he is not with them .
Any help greatly appreciated

Hi everyone
Im having a hard time trying to find Thomas Percy SCARROTT born 1894 in Jul quarter in Alverstoke Hampshire .
One of my ancestors has the same name , born in the same area but in 1872 [ and apparently has no children ]  I am thinking that Thomas Percy born 1894 may be the son of Thomas Percy 1872 .
I cant find him in 1901 census or 1911 and I can't seem to find a death for him  ::)
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
