Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Baptism Amendment Hard to Read
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I have found an ancestor's baptism in Latin but there is a crossing out of my great, great grandfather's name with another name written above it. This is a real surprise! There is also a little cross and an amendment below which I am finding hard to read. I think it is also in Latin. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / False Details on Birth Certificate?
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
I have a UK birth certificate from 1903 which has the name of the child's father on it - however, as the child was born out of wedlock, I'm not sure how reliable it is. The child was later informally adopted and never knew who her parents were. I have doubts because the father's surname is the same as the mother's maiden name - not impossible, but unlikely?

What were the rules in 1903? Could the mother put the father's name of the birth certificate without him being present? Was there any need for confirmation?

I have found the baptism record which has a question mark for the father - just his profession - soldier.

Has anyone got any info that could help?

Thanks

Hi there

I have found what I think is my 9th great grandfather's will - John Walter from Winterslow, Wiltshire. I was hoping that the will mentions his wife, as I have no idea who she was. I can't see her name in the will - even though it does say wife - but I may be missing something. It mentions his children by name and they all fit my family tree apart from one Agnes - I have an Ann instead.

Could you please have a look to check for name of wife and if Agnes might be Ann.

Thanks.

The Common Room / Records about Police Officers
« on: Tuesday 15 November 22 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there.

I hope I am posting in the right place. I'm trying to find information about my great Uncle who served with the Hampshire (I think) and Portsmouth police from about 1914/5 to the 1950s. I have found newspaper articles which has been useful but I have no idea when he joined etc.

Is there anywhere I can check online? Do police pension records exist online?

Many thanks

Cork / Tracing ancestor who worked in Detention Barracks Cork
« on: Wednesday 29 December 21 08:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I am trying to track an ancestor who is mentioned on his brother’s passenger documents to USA as being a sergeant at the Detention Barracks in Cork in 1909. I think I have found his attestation papers dated 1895 but need more confirmation that it is him - he possibly enlisted with the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He has a common name William Murphy.

If he worked in the Detention Barracks would he still be with the Royal Munster Fusiliers? Where could I find further information about him. Marriage and death certificates are hard to identify due to his common name. DOB is 1879.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / A missing birth - Jeneva (?) Dowland
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 19:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I have been doing some research on Mary Sainsbury - born in Kimpton, Hampshire in 1808 and have got a bit stuck! She married James Dowland on 3rd January 1826 in Longparish, Hampshire. It seems that she had a daughter called Jeneva - but I have found no record of her in Hampshire or Wiltshire or anywhere else. I know she had a daughter as I found  a Wiltshire Removal Order dated 12 July 1834 (another one says 1835) - from Kimpton Hampshire to Potterne, Wiltshire (her husband was born there.) It says Mary widow of James with daughter Jeneva.

The only record that comes close is one I found on Family Search for a Genafever Dowland - father James and mother Mary - but it is dated 24 September 1829 in Limerick Ireland! The father is a soldier from the 62nd Regiment. Is there any way I can confirm this is her?

I have looked for military records for James Dowland ( baptism 24.7.1794 Potterne, Wiltshire)- but no luck!

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Cork / Was this a location of a Magdalene Laundry in Cork?
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 15:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there - I need some help!

I know my great grandmother had a child out of wedlock in February 1882 in Cork. I have found a civil record which I think is her child. The address given is 37 Peacock Lane. I have done a search and have found that there was a Magdalene Laundry in Peacock Lane in Cork. Does anyone know if the address corresponds to a Magdalene Laundry? Was it operating in 1882?

I am unsure whether this is her child - as the father's name is correct on the civil record (his profession isn't) and the mother's Christian and maiden name corresponds to my great, great grandmother's. I suspect her mother might have claimed the child was hers - but why put the address of a Magdalene Laundry (if it is one?) Also the civil record is from September 1882 but the parish record is from February 1882 - and both parents are correct on this record (but they were not married and there is no mention of the child being born out of wedlock - even though she definitely was.)
They married in April 1882 in England. So - could the civil record be who I think it is? I can't find any other civil record for the child.

Any ideas and help gratefully received!

Armed Forces / Need help with ancestor’s naval profession
« on: Thursday 03 October 19 07:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I wonder if any of you can help. On the 1861 census my ancestor is listed on the HMS Victor Emmanuel as being the Chief V Master. I am assuming this is something to do with victualling - a previous post was ‘chief cook’. What exactly would this job have entailed? I also think my ancestor couldn’t read as he signed his military papers with an x in 1853. I assume that victualling would have involved some kind of accounting - so how would he have been able to do this?

Any info would be very gratefully received :)

Thanks

Wiltshire / Birth of John Sainsbury - Died 1758 in Winterslow, Wiltshire
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 08:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm trying to find the birth of John Sainsbury who died as an infant in Winterslow, Wiltshire in 1758. He is recorded in the parish records as being an infant and the national register has recorded him as being 0 years old when he died. Therefore, I think he should have been born in 1757 or 1758 - or maybe my supposition is wrong.

Another infant John Sainsbury died in Winterslow in 1755 and died in 1755 - both are recorded in the parish record and have parents John and Mary Sainsbury - potentially my relatives. I am wondering whether they had another son in 1758 and used the same name.

I think John and Mary Sainsbury possibly went on to have yet another son named John Sainsbury born in Winterslow in 1766 who survived and is definitely my relative - parents John and Mary Sainsbury, but I am not sure if they are the same John and Mary Sainsbury ( who married in Winterslow in 1754). The time gap looks a bit suspect. Also, I can find no other siblings born in Winterslow which is weird.Maybe they moved somewhere else and then moved back to Winterslow?

I am wondering if John Sainsbury was born some where else in 1757/8. However, I can't find a birth that makes sense in Wiltshire. I am also wondering if I have an error in my family tree with the John Sainsbury born in 1766. Maybe a different John and Mary Sainsbury were his parents.

Any ideas or suggestions of where to look next would be helpful. I am pulling my hair out here! Too many John Sainsburys! (Also my dad's name by the way :) )
