Roscommon / Elizabeth Holmes, Bumlin, County Roscommon.
« on: Wednesday 06 April 11 16:29 BST (UK)  »
My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Holmes.  I have been told that she was from Gortoose, Bumlin, County Roscommon and that she had one sister Mary, and brothers Michael and William.  A Thomas Holmes was a witness to my great great grandparents marriage in 1861, and I suspect he was another brother.

I’ve searched the 1901 and 1911 Census’s of Ireland and I think I’ve found all of the above named brothers in Bumlin and Annaghmore, along with possibly another brother John in Gortoose.

Eliza had previously married John Farrell in 1856 in Strokestown and had two children that I know of - Mary (born 1857) and Patrick (born 1858).  Patrick died in Providence, Rhode Island in 1931, but I’ve no idea what happen to Mary or Eliza's first husband.  My family didn’t even know of this marriage or their children until I started my research.

I would love to hear from any distant family members or anyone with information to help my research.

Thank you.

Kilkenny / Rigby/Merry, Ballincrea, County Kilkenny.
« on: Monday 20 December 10 21:46 GMT (UK)  »

My great great grandparents were Walter Merry (b. 1846) and Alice Rigby (b. 1852) and they were married in Slieverue in April 1873.  Their children were Mary (b.1874), Kate (b.1876, d.1883), James (b.1877), Anastasia (b.1879), Stephen (b.1882), Margaret (b.1887), Walter (b.1889), Thomas (b.1890), Alice (b.1892), Edward (b.1894), Kate (b.1896) and Richard (b.1897).  This large family was raised in Ballincrea, County Kilkenny.

My great grandmother was Alice Merry.

There must be hundreds of Merry descendants out there now :)

Any information will be much appreciated.

Wexford / Reddy - Carrigbyrne & Murrintown.
« on: Monday 20 December 10 20:51 GMT (UK)  »

My great grandmother was Margaret Sophia Reddy, born c. 1875 to Joseph Reddy and Sarah (Lacey ?).  She had sisters Mary (born c.1866), Sarah (born c.1879) and Bridget (born c.1883) and a brother Patrick (born c.1877) that I know of.  The family were living in the Murrintown area of Wexford when Margaret married James Dooley in 1902, but I have found LDS records which would suggest that some of Margaret’s older siblings were born in Carrigbyrne, County Wexford.

I’m looking for any information on Reddy’s in the areas of Carrigbyrne and Murrintown as I’ve no information prior to my great grandmother’s marriage.

Thanks for your time.

Waterford / Fowler, County Waterford.
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 11:39 BST (UK)  »
I believe that my 3 times great grandfather was Captain John Fowler and I've heard that he was buried in Crooke, County Waterford.

I know he had a daughter, Agnes, born in the 1850's, but that's all I know about my Fowlers.

Can anyone shed any light on my Fowler ancestors?

Thanks.

Roscommon / Mary Farrell born 1857, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 11:27 BST (UK)  »
My great great grandmother Elizabeth (Eliza) Holmes was married twice. Firstly to John Farrell in 1856 and then my great great grandfather John Rattigan in 1861. Both marriages took place in Strokestown, County Roscommon.

I've only recently learned that Eliza had 2 children from her first marriage - Mary in 1857 and Patrick in 1858. I have just discovered records online for Patrick Farrell - he married Mary Winn in 1894 in Providence, Washington, Rhode Island and had a son John in 1895 and a daughter Marie or Mary in 1899.

Now I'm wondering what happened to Mary Farrell?  Did my great great grandmother's daughter survive?

Any help with the Farrell's is greatly appreciated.

I would love to learn more about my great grandfather's half brothers family. Any Farrell descendants out there?

Occupation Interests / Royal Irish Constabulary requirements
« on: Monday 28 June 10 16:15 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather joined the RIC aged almost 18 in 1882 (age not filled in on service record).

I have a few questions.  How was he allowed to join at this stage when his father was a farmer and my great grandfather was only 5ft 8".  Weren't the requirements:  age 19 & height 5ft 9?

His native County was "Roscommon (connected to Longford)".  What does this mean?  I have nothing tying my family to Longford.  Both his parents were from Roscommon.

He was 1st transferred to Galway West Riding.  Can anyone tell me where exactly that was?

I have 1 final question (for now!).  What were the pension requirements?  Did they have to retire by a certain age or after serving a particular length of time?

Any information is gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Roscommon / Where would this church record be held now?
« on: Monday 14 June 10 11:22 BST (UK)  »
I found my great great grandparents marriage record on the Roscommon Heritage & Genealogy Company website.  It states they were married in 1861 in the Parish/District of Strokestown.  I'm trying to find their father's names and I guess their marriage is the only place to find out.  Unfortunately, these names aren't included on the record.

Can anyone tell me where the church records are now kept so I can check it out?  As it's pre-1864, I doubt the GRO will have the registration.  Their 1st surviving son was born in Gortoose parish of Bumlin in 1864.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks for your time.

I want to find my great grandfather's obituary.  He died in Waterford in 1979.  Could someone please tell me where I could look for it?

Thank you.
