Cornwall / Is this building in Cornwall?
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone identify this building which is in the background of an unidentified portrait? I think there is one similar near the South West Coast path perhaps between Fowey and Polperro? I am sure I saw it in the background of a TV program Walking Through History, which I saw recently here in Australia. I think the sitter of the portrait is a relative who had close connections to Cornwall, who wrote a book or two about Cornish mining c1848 [/img]

Durham / Northeast Inheritance database and funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund
« on: Friday 21 March 14 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
The Durham and Northumberland probate records, 1527-1857, reference of which can be found at the Durham University site. The Northeast Inheritance database can be found on the site but I would like to see the original digital images.
The homepage of the NEI database states the project is "funded by a £274,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This grant of £274,500 is matched by contributions from Durham University and by the English Record Collections Society, amounting to a further £141,250". And "Access to both the catalogue and the digital images will be free and available worldwide"  on the Genealogical Society of Utah's website.
I have sent emails to both the pages' maintainers (no replies at all- and last updated Dec 2010) and the GSU (who say they don't know what I'm talking about..)  I have recently found references to the wills on the FamilySearch site but they are only available on film and I need to pay to access them at one of their Family History centres or affiliates here in Australia. The cost is reasonable but I would also have to drive an hour each way to access them only in business hours- not a good option I think when it is stated they would be freely available online.
I am wondering if any of the funding was given to the GSU to make them freely available online, and if so when will that happen?
What do you think?

Hertfordshire / any bastardy records for Great Berkhamstead 1839? SAUNDERS
« on: Monday 19 August 13 16:19 BST (UK)  »
Lucy Theresa SAUNDERS was born 28 Nov 1839 at Great Berkhamstead, the illegitimate daughter of Theresa Jane SAUNDERS.
I don't know where Lucy was christened, her birth cert just states Great Berkhamstead.

I think she is in the 1841 census as Fanny Saunders, with her mother as Jane, a grocer (Theresa Janes father was a grocer) living with a Mrs Stacey, schoolteacher: High st, Great Berkhamstead.

They are at the Watford Workhouse in 1851, Theresa Jane TURNER with her husband Henry Turner, and Lucy Theresa SAUNDERS pages later, a pauper. The workhouse would have wanted to  know who her father was wouldn't it?

The Turner family emmigrated to Australia in 1852.
When Lucy married in Australia in 1861 she gave her father as William SUTTON, stockbroker.
The only WS I can find living in Great Berkhamstead in 1841 is William Henry SUTTON, of Rossway Farm, Northchurch; in 1841 independent; 1851 a Land proprietor; in 1861 a landholder and at his death- esquire. Sounds like a man who could have been a stockbroker..

Are there any records of Bastardy cases of the day, can anyone suggest where I should look?.

Armed Forces / can anyone identify the military uniforms in 2 portraits c1815
« on: Saturday 27 July 13 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi
can anyone identify the military uniforms which are worn in 2 portraits which are part of the National Trust collection at Cragside?
I believe I can identify the sitters but am having difficulty finding military information for one of them, and having little/no knowledge of the military of the time cannot be certain of the other.
I do not wish to post the images (copyright?), am I able to post links to the images?

I think this is my 4th ggrandfather John Watson. He was born c1790 near Bamburgh, Northumberland. According to a family tree from Lord Armstrongs archives, Tyne and Wear he was 'in the army, settled in Ireland" which I already knew.
I know he had not enlisted in the army by 1804. He married in Ireland in Feb 1815, and remained there. Other family members think he was a Captain but the only references I have found of him say Lieutenant.

Could this be his brother Joseph Yelloly Watson 1793 Bamburgh-1818 India? I have the documents, his application as a cadet to the East India Company dated Jan 1812. He died in 1818 in India, an ensign of the Bengali Infantry. I thought this would be an army, but am thrown by the fact that he is painted with an anchor and ships in the background.

These 2 portraits seem to be part of a set of 5 portraits, all in the same or similar frames. I am sure I can identify the other 3 portraits from 2 family photographs and also personal (family history research) knowledge of the ages and occupations of the 4 Watson brothers and their cousin WH Watson who became Lord Armstrongs brother-in-law. The portraits of the parents of the 4 brothers do hang at Cragside and are identified as Dorothy Gillily (should read Yelloly) and William Watson.

If there are any clues in the portraits in could help further my research, particularly that of my John Watson.

Longford / Forgney Parish Record, Watson+Moffatt 1815
« on: Monday 26 April 10 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a record of the marriage of John Watson and Mary Moffatt at the Church of Ireland (St Munis?). I have the date 23 Feb 1815.
Marys father James Moffatt was the Rector at the time.

I am also looking for baptisms of any children of the couple, particularly James Samuel Watson. I have 1818 but cannot be certain about that.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / lookup request for Watson 1782+
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 06:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I need some help please..
William Watson (1757,-1814, died Berwick?) married Dorothy Yelloly (1760, Ellingham parish -? aft 1822) in 1782 Belford parish.
They lived at Waren House, and owned Waren Mill. Later they lived at Adderstone House.
I have records of births and deaths of both their families going back a few generations.

I am looking for births of their children, 4 sons that I know of,
William b 1782, d Essex aft 1851
Clement b abt 1788, d1814
Adam b?, d India 1817
John b ?, d1850(I think, settled Ireland)

I am a descendant of John. I know he joined the army, and settled and married in Longford, Ireland in 1815. This was probably a second marriage.
A daughter was Margaretta Hannah Henrietta Keon Watson, born abt 1814, which points to John having been married before. Of course she might have been born anywhere, with John being in the army.

I know its not much to go on, as I have quite a few question marks here, and would really appreciate any assistance or advice.
