The Common Room / Phillips Family Photos
« on: Friday 08 July 11 16:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm appealing to any member of the Phillips family (Stockport & Berkshire),
close or extended, for photos of my late paternal Grandparents, Frederick William Phillips b 1869- d 1925 & Alice Joyce Phillips, nee Matthews, b 1872- d 1951.
As Grandfather died before I was born, and I only saw Grandmother once as a small child, I would dearly love to know what they looked like.

If anyone can help I shall be very grateful.

Cheshire / George Smith went to Russia
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 16:38 BST (UK)  »
My Gt Grandfather, George Smith was a Steam Loco. Driver (Static) at Healds Foundry in Stockport, and in 1882 was sent out by them to Russia to help build the Siberian railway.
I still have his original passport and a photo taken whilst out there, but, that's it.
Also tried looking in newspaper articles of the period for further info. without success.
Can anyone help flesh out the facts and maybe succeed where I failed?
Any help very much appreciated, as he is one of my (many !) brick walls.
Thanks in anticipation

World War One / Military Armaments
« on: Monday 12 July 10 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but here goes.
Can anyone tell me anything about a WW1 fuse called the candy twist or cheese twist? for use in the underground tunnels. Supposedly invented by my Grandfather Andre Levy-Strauss,it is said it was more waterproof than previous fuses.  Grandfather was awarded the Croix de Guerre, but not sure if it was on the strength of the invention.

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / A Thank-you!
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
To Carole Richard & Shaun who took the time to help me with my "Lost Foreigner".

I'm now fairly certain that the Andre Levy-Strauss details found for me ARE my Grandfather.  Think my mother would have been pleased to at least set the records straight.  Even though illegitimate; she had a great sense of humour!!

The Common Room / The Lost Foreigner Mystery.
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help solve this one please?
My maternal Grandfather ANDRE LEON LEVY-STRAUSS, a mining engineer b abt, 1873 Nancy, France, went to work in Orange Free State, S.A. sometime around 1900.  Met and supposedly married my Grandmother ELIZABETH SMITH sometime after 1902. Grandmother returned on her own to UK where my mother was born Feb 1909.
The story goes; Grandfather was killed in a brawl in S.A. abt 1909.  Trying to find out more, my remaining elder brother remarks "He was in the German Diplomatic Service", but refuses to say more. (a spy!!!!?)  Fast forward to this week - I have found on Ancestry incoming Shipping Passenger lists for 1914, a record corresponding almost exactly with Grandfather's known details.
HELP! This opens a whole new can of worms, so if anyone has any ideas, suggestions etc, all will be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Obadiah.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Hampstead Norreyes Parish Registers-Dasten
« on: Thursday 04 October 07 16:33 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone verify a christening date for me of an Elizabeth Dasten (or Daston)?
Supposedly christened 20 Oct 1711 in Hampstead Norreyes, I am querying this as she Married my 3xGt Grandfather Benjamin in 1758 and gave birth to her youngest daughter, also called Elizabeth, in 1775.  This would have made her 64 years old then!
I have assumed that the date 1711 is a misprint and should read 1741, but would like to get this confirmed.
Thank you

Obadiah
