Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1891 census in Newport
« on: Tuesday 02 January 24 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out if a family named Sheppard are related to my ancestors of the same name.
William and Elizabeth Ann Sheppard lived in 6 East Usk Road in 1895. They lost several of their children (Samuel in 1895, and also Henry, Martha, Mary Ann and Florence Maria between 1888 and 1898). In 1901, the family were living at number 11 East Usk Road.
If anyone could find them, I'd like to know if there were any other siblings which may be related to me, notably Mark (b 1824), Sarah Ann (b 1824), Celia Annis/Annie (b 1827), Hester Anna (b 1830), May Eliza (b 1833) and Betty Susan (b 1834).
Mark was my GGG grandfather.
Thank you 😊

Monmouthshire / Newport Iron Works
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
A friend of mine is doing some research into Charles D Phillips, the iron works on Emlyn Street in Newport. The Newport Centre now stands on the site or the works. Does anyone know where we might find a photo of the factory before it was demolished in the 1930s? I've searched and only found pictures of the blue plaque. I've also searched through all my Uncles books (local historians will have heard of Terry Underwood).
Many thanks in advance  :)

« on: Saturday 11 September 21 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Today we visited 3 churches I the hope of finding ancestral graves but found none, despite assistance from church volunteers.
Would anyone know of any churchyard maps for -
Toynton All Saints
St Andrews at Halton Holegate
St Helens at Ashby by Partney
All relatives in these churchyards have the surname BOGG and buried years range from 1722 to 1897
Many thanks

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Samuel Orrey
« on: Thursday 24 June 21 14:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)

Is anyone able to do a look up for me please? I have death dates for my G3 grandparents, both are buried at the church in Halton Holegate in East Lindsey. Samuel Orrey died in 1893, his wife Susannah in 1897. If anyone could please do a look up for me on the 1891 census for the area, to see where they were living then, I would really appreciate it.
I know the spelling of both their surname and my G3 grandmothers first name may be slightly different.
I live close to Halton Holegate now and would love to go find their house!
Thank you so much

Jules

Lincolnshire / Halton Holegate - Orrey/Bogg
« on: Friday 22 June 18 21:51 BST (UK)  »
My paternal grandfather's family are from around the Spilsby area. I know some of them died in or near Halton Holegate and went to the church there (St Andrews) today to hunt for graves. It was rather like looking for a needle in a haystack. Is there any way of finding a map or plan of the graves there please?
All help much appreciated. I'm desperate to put flesh on the bones of this part of my family and possibly find my great grandfather's identity.
Thank you 😊

Lincolnshire / Francis Edward Wright born Spilsby 1906
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 19:56 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help. My paternal grandfather, Francis Edward Wright, was born in Spilsby in June 1906. I have his birth certificate but it only has his mother's name - Ada Ellen Wright. The father is not recorded.

How can I find out more about my grandfather and his heritage please? Parish records (he was christened at Toynton St Peter in July 1906) show only his mother, as far as I can determine.

He had a sister, Eveline, who was born in New Leake in 1913.

I would be really grateful for any help.

Thank you

Julie

Monmouthshire / The Berkeley Arms, Chepstow
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about the history of the Berkeley Arms in Chepstow? Its situated in Station Road and is now a centre for adults with learning difficulties.

I understand it used to be a public house/hotel but googling finds nothing at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if someone can point me in the direction of photos or press cuttings.

Thank you very much

Jules :D

Monmouthshire / Alexander Cordell
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Whilst in the Abergavenny area, researching my family, I went to Llanfoist. I understood that Alexander Cordell, the novelist, was buried there. I went to St Faith's church and strolled around the graveyard but I didnt find his grave.

I did find the monument to Crawshay Bailey, the great ironmaster who inevitably 'owned' my ancestors who worked in the Blaenavon and Nantyglo ironworks.

Does anyone know if Alexander himself is actually buried at Llanfoist? If so, where? All the literature on the internet seems to indicate that he is, but the history of the church, which was posted on the noticeboard in the church porch, only mentioned Bailey.

Be grateful for any insight on this.

Thank you  ;D
