Family History Beginners Board / edward littler
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 22:46 BST (UK)  »
My second great grandmother Esther married her lodger Edward Littler, (born in budworth cheshire) in St Helens 1874 after her first husband died approximately 1866? her son my great grandfather may be the son of the lodger as he was born in 1868 but on his birth certificate it says father unknown. I had been trying to confirm the death date for her first husband John Wilson who was born in warrington. according to a family story John apparently was hit by a railway truck which damaged his legs and he died days later. I haven't been able to find a record confirming this. However I was having a browse on a local history site called Sutton beauty and heritage and I came across a suicide report for an Edward Littler. for sept 1905. this man had died on the train tracks. after the story of the first husband dying after an accident i wondered if the stories had got mixed up and maybe this Edward Littler could possibly be my relative. I cannot find a death record for him on lancashire bmd or a church burial. I would appreciate any help trying to find any information for either of these men

Lancashire / James Harrison
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
In june 1890 my great great aunt Mary Ellen Wilson married a James Harrison at St Aidens in Billinge lancashire. It seems that he had already married in 1884. However the first mrs Harrison was neither deceased or divorced at the time of his second marriage. We think his first wife was also called Mary. Is there any way of finding out any information on his first family  eg who she was ..if they had any children and what became of them after he left

Lancashire / Catholic records
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 12:33 BST (UK)  »
does anyone else find it hard to find catholic records. I have been trying to find a baptism record for Norman Richard Parry born  June 1925 in Liverpool  He had a twin named Kenneth. I cannot find a baptism record for either of them. Or a death record for Kenneth who I am told died at an early age. I believe their mothers maiden name was Isaacs, I don't have a first name for her.

Has anyone else had similar problems

« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 13:39 BST (UK)  »
My great uncles Edward born 1892 and Henry born 1890 in St Helens Lancashire. I know they were taken to Canada around 1905. prior to that they had been in a children's home in Yorkshire. I have never been able to find a death or marriage cert for their mother and wonder if she had joined them in Canada as a family member has found a record for a Lucy Riley in Chapleau Ontario and that is where the boys lived when they got older. any help would be truly appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Frank Riley
« on: Saturday 25 March 17 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping to find information on my great grandfather Frank Riley born around 1861. His parents were Peter and Mary Riley both born in Ireland and his wife was Lucy Riley nee Smith.

I am trying to find if he Frank Riley connected to the murder of James Gordon is my great grandfather or could it possibly be his brother in law....his sister Mary was married to a Frank Riley who was born around the same time. in the http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/JAMESGORDON.html it says the wife of Frank Riley had five children, which my great grandfather had but so had his sister and her husband. so I am at a loss how to find out which of them it was or if it was someone else with the same name.

Norfolk / Henry and Lucy Smith
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Smiths of Norfolk?
I am trying to find records for Henry Smith, and his wife Lucy.
They married and had a daughter Lucy born 1865 in Norfolk  and a son Charles born 1867 in Newcastle.
At some point the family came to St Helens Lancashire were Lucy snr died 1905, after being pushed down the stairs and fracturing her skull. The age on the certificate is 68. it says her husband was Henry Smith and he was a forge Puddler.
I am having trouble with this family because according to the 1881 census she is living in Frazer's court as a widow with the two children, she gives her age as 50 and her birthplace as London Middlesex...she changes the birthplace location to Norfolk on later census records and her age isn't right. on her daughters and sons marriage records they have their father Henry Smith down as a wellsinker. I have found a Henry Smith (wellsinker) with his wife Lucy living in Norfolk on the 1851 census,  if the 1851 record is right the age on her death cert is wrong and I can't find them on the 1861 or the 1871 census's or a death record for Henry Smith. can you help please

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Garton
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 11:21 BST (UK)  »
HI
I am trying to find some information on the parents of Elizabeth Garton
she was baptised at St Wilfreds Farnworth on the 30/08/1807.
I know that her parents were Richard and Sarah but nothing more.

I am trying to connect the above family to a Mary Garton whose grave my grandfather frequently visited.

Mary Garton was born in 1780 and died in 1850 in St Helens she was married to a John Garton who I believe was a  yeoman widower.

There may be no connection but I would never have looked for the Gartons in the family if my aunt hadn't told me about Mary Garton and was shocked when I found the maiden name of Elizabeth.

If you could help me find the parent of Richard Garton and any brothers he may have had that may tie the families together.

regards
karen

Caernarvonshire / roberts family from bethesda
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 15:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have been researching my roberts side of the family in bethesda north wales and have come a bit unstuck
I found john roberts slate quarryman born 1864 with his wife elizabeth and three sons robert, thomas and henry
the problem  I have is that when I then tried for the 1881 family search census there is only one john roberts born in bethesda...with a mother ann and a stepfather thomas owen but the date is  not right.
there are other john roberts born ...within the area of Llanllechid  which I believe bethesda is a hamlet off. so I am not sure which way to go as I don't have any parent names to go off.
the family left bethesda in approx 1892 and moved to st helens merseyside...and according to the 1891 census none of them spoke english
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
thank you
