Has anyone got any suggestions, or know if areas of Hampshire haven't been transcribed yet? My 5x Gt Grandmother Rebekah Gruncill married Edmund Wheeler of Portsea on 3rd April 1785 in Alverstoke, Hampshire. I have spent many hours trying to find her birth or potential family using various spellings of Grunsil, Grunsel, Grounsil, Grunsell, Grounsell, Gransil, Grunswell but can't find any variations of these surnames with Rebekah as first name. I have even looked for male Gruncill's who married a Rebekah incase she was a widow. Totally perplexed.

World War One / Can anyone help with a regiment?
« on: Friday 21 November 14 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find out which regiment my great grandfather served in during WW1.   I know he was in the Army Veterinary Corps, he was a Private, and his regimental number was SE-14655.  He lived in Kent so I wondered if the SE would have been for South East? His name was Harry Golding and he would have been 44 years of age when the war started.  I would appreciate any help or ideas, thank you

Sussex Lookup Requests / Looking for Hazelden or Heselden in the Burwash area
« on: Wednesday 17 September 14 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi, wondering if anyone can help me.  I am trying to trace Ellen Hazelden b.1850 in the Burwash area.  I haven't been able to find her until her marriage on 29/10/1870 when she married William Edward Bateup (also listed at times as Baitup or Batcup).  The marriage took place at Brenchley, Kent.
Many thanks,
Julie

Sussex Lookup Requests / Alexandra Park Hastings, Gardeners
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 21:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can tell me where I might find out about gardeners that worked in Alexandra Park Hastings?  I have been told that a relative was a head gardener there and wondered if its possible to confirm this.  It would have been sometime between 1930 and 1956.  Thanks in advance.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Greatham Marriage Look up please
« on: Tuesday 26 July 11 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to knock down a brick wall, and was hoping that someone may be able to look up a record for a marriage between Peter Phillips and Anne Knight on 28/09/1811 at Greatham.  I am hoping that there may be either fathers names or other potential relatives if by banns.  I can't seem to go back any further than this couple,
many thanks,
Julie

The Lighter Side / How do I find this woman?
« on: Friday 07 October 05 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I have a mystery that I am keen to solve although I can't see a way of solving it.

My great grandfather (Harry Golding) was married twice.  His first wife (Florence Annie Bateup) died of rheumatic fever, after nearly five years of marriage in 1902.  They had a daughter called Violet Edith Golding born 2/11/1899 in Horsmonden, Kent.

Harry remarried in 1908 to my great grandmother Annie Elizabeth Baldock, and they raised 5 children.  I cannot find out what happened to Violet Edith.  My mother remembers as a child, going to Hastings to visit a lady who she believes was my grandad's step sister, but she can't remember much about it, my gran (mum's mother) doesn't remember and grandad passed away 19 years ago.

Although I have a copy of Violets birth certificate, I cannot find out anything else about her through BMD.  I presume that she is no longer alive, but she could be an octogenarian.

I would appreciate any suggestions

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Emma Wheatley Hawkins
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find my husbands great grandmother Emma.  She was born about 1872, I believe in Collingham, Staffordshire.  Her son and granddaughter (my mother-in-law) have said that her surname was either Wheatley or Oakins, but I have found on her marriage certificate that she is Emma Wheatley Hawkins.

The marriage certificate shows her marrying George Thomas Richardson on 20/12/1893 in Ticehurst, Sussex, her father was Henry Hawkins occupation Butcher.  I have been told that Emma's mother was french, although this may not be accurate, I have been told that she had a sister called Kate.

As a teenager Emma worked for the Thornycrofts in London as a maid, she later moved with her mistress to Weirleigh in Matfield, Kent where she worked for the parents of the poet Siegfried Sassoon whose grandmother was Mrs. Thornycroft.

I would love to find Emma on the census before 1901, and obtain a birth certificate, but unfortunately I can't find a birth entry either.

Can anyone help with my mystery woman?
