Dublin / Shamrock Rovers - Ringsend/Irishtown
« on: Sunday 25 March 12 09:57 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather (Patrick Sheridan) was born in The Square, Irishtown (1886), lived in Irishtown Rd (1901) and Rope Walk Place (1911).  He had a brother John Sheridan (3 years older) and a brother Joseph Sheridan (6 years younger).  On a trip to Dublin earlier this week a very helpful, knowledgeable cab driver suggested that my Grandfather may have been a Shamrock Rovers supporter bearing in mind where he lived and the time period he lived there.  I have googled Shamrock Rovers and discovered they were founded where the districts of Ringsend/Irishtown meet in 1901 and played in Ringsend Park right next to where my Grandfather lived.  I have also discovered on Wikipedia the statement: "Until 1926, Shamrock Rovers wore green and white striped jerseys but following a suggestion by a committee member, John Sheridan, the club chose to adopt the green and white hooped strip.".  I'm wondering if the John Sheridan mentioned could be my Great-Uncle.  Does anyone know anything about the founding of Shamrock Rovers?  Was it the local men that set up the club, and does anyone think this John Sheridan mentioned could be my Great-Uncle?  Any info or opinions would be most welcome.

Dublin / Thank You Rootschat and the People of Dublin
« on: Saturday 24 March 12 10:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to the help and advice from those on Rootschat and the lovely people of Dublin, I have gone from only knowing my Grandfather's name and that he was born in Dublin to yesterday standing in the church where he was baptised.  I now know his date of birth and I also saw three houses where he used to live.  I've found out the names of my Great Grandparents and my G-G-Grandparents and have some leads to carry on the research.  I would not have been able to do this without your help Rootschat Ireland so thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I got back from Dublin yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed my trip and the lovely people I met.  You could say I'm pretty happy!!   ;D

Dublin / Any Advice please for 1st trip to Dublin / Star of the Sea
« on: Friday 13 January 12 10:17 GMT (UK)  »

With the help of Rootschatters in the past, I managed to track down (with very little info) my Grandfather in the 1901 and 1911 census of Dublin, and his sister’s marriage.  I am now lucky enough to be making my first ever trip to Ireland later this year and will be staying in Dublin for a couple of days.  I plan to visit where my Grandfather lived and his family’s church, the Star of the Sea in Sandymount.  I have been in touch with the Star of the Sea by email previously but as they are obviously very busy it takes some months for them to reply.  Would anyone know if it’s possible to just “turn up” at this church and have a look at their records or do you have to make an appointment beforehand?  I have an email from them saying they have located my Grandfather’s baptism in their records but am still awaiting a response regarding getting a copy of the certificate, so it would be great if I could maybe get it when I come over to visit and see if there are any other family members in their records.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for good places to visit in Dublin from a genealogical viewpoint that would be much appreciated.  I’m really looking forward to my first visit.  :)

Cork / Courtney in Cork - Can you Help?
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Needle in a Haystack I'm afraid so this is a bit of a challenge if anyone can help. I would greatly welcome any information anyone can find.  I am trying to find out about my Grandmother and her family and know next to nothing about her before she came to England.  The information I have is:

- Maiden Name:  Mary Ann / Annie Courtney

- Estimated year of birth from Death Certificate 1887 (her birthday was in February)

- A little Irish lady with a strong accent, she told my father she came from Cork but I don't know whereabouts.

- Her father's name was John Courtney a Blacksmith (from marriage cert to my Grandfather)

- She came to England sometime approx in 1920's (earliest trace in England is in 1927).

- She must have had a first marriage in Ireland to a Mr Martin, as on the marriage certificate to my Grandfather she was "Annie Martin, Widow".  She apparently met my Grandfather on the boat on the way over from Ireland.

-  When she came to England she had a daughter, Florence Martin (who was also a witness on her marriage cert to my Grandfather).  Know nothing about Florence except my dad remembering visiting her when he was little.

-  Married to my Grandfather in 1927 in Charlton, London (I have the marriage cert for this).

-  Death Certificate in Greenwich, London: September 1955, Mary Ann Sheridan - 68 years (I have this Death Certificate).

- Possibly had a sister called "Cissy"?

- I have found an Annie Courtney in the 1901 census of Bluepool Upper (Kanturk, Cork) aged 13 (right age) with a father John Courtney, general labourer, but have no way of knowing if this is her as I have so little information to corroborate so am scratching my head.

That's all I know I'm afraid, not a lot to go on I know, but if anyone is able to come up with anything I'd be extremely grateful.

Dublin / Chapel of Sandymount, Donnybrook, Dublin
« on: Monday 25 April 11 15:57 BST (UK)  »
I have read some old posts on here regarding the Chapel of Sandymount, Donnybrook, but I'm afraid I'm still rather lost and wonder if someone could help me  ???.  I have the marriage certificate of my Great Aunt, Catherine Sheridan, who was married in this Chapel in May 1900.  I'm hoping to be able to get over to Dublin for the first time this year, and as I think this Chapel is the family church I would love to go and visit it and maybe search some records if they are available.  However, I'm unsure whether this chapel would be the Star of the Sea or the Sacred Heart.  My Grandfather and the Sheridan family lived in Irishtown Road, Dublin in 1900/01 and in Rope Walk Place, Dublin in 1911.  Any advice or pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated as I'm afraid I have no knowledge of Dublin at all.

Many thanks,
Polly B

Armed Forces / Uniform to Identify Please.
« on: Wednesday 24 March 10 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
I attach a photograph of my G-G-Grandfather with his wife.  Is anyone able to shed any light on his uniform please?

In the 1891 Census my G-Grandfather is residing at Fort Monckton which is listed with Fort Blockhouse in Alverstoke, Hampshire.  His occupation is Valet Domestic Servant.  I presume that this is a military place.  I'd be grateful for any information anyone can give me regarding this place.  Many thanks.

Photo of my Great Grandparents about 1900 I think.  I'd be very grateful if someone would restore this photo as best as possible, and if anyone knows what uniform my G-Grandfather is wearing or has any comments I'd love to hear them.  Thank you.

The Common Room / Was She a Bigamist? Your views please.
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
I'll try and keep this long story short, and would be grateful for any views on this.

My Great-Grandparents Ann and Ed got married in 1898 and had two children.  In 1905 Ann left home and disappeared desserting her two sons, John and James (aged 2 and 4) and her husband, Ed. The reason she left is unknown.

Fastforward to 1927 and John is approached in the street by a man who says he is his brother (Bill).  I have recently confirmed that this man Bill was (according to his birth certificate) John's full brother.  Bill  was born in 1905, therefore Ann must have been pregnant when she disappeared - the plot thickens.  Bill asked John if he'd like to meet their mum Ann.  When John and Bill get to Ann's house, Ann refuses to see John saying it would "open up too many old wounds".  John walks away and never sees Bill or Ann again.

Yesterday I received a marriage certificate which shows that Ann got re-married in 1930, she states she is a widow.  Ann was not a widow as Ed (her first husband) was still alive and did not pass away until 1962.  I have been told that as Ann had not seen Ed since 1905 and therefore had had no contact for 25 years when she got remarried she could assume he had passed away.  I'm not too sure this is right, especially as Ed would have only been 49 at the time, quite young to pass away naturally, and that if Ann had spoken to John when he tried to visit her in 1927 he could have told her that his father Ed was alive and kicking and that he was in contact with him.

Was Ann a Bigamist or were things different in 1930 and you could assume someone had passed away if you had had no contact for 25 years?  Your views would be much appreciated.
