Roscommon / Coen Casey family connection Ballymoe
« on: Tuesday 10 December 19 04:35 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information about step-grandmother Sarah Casey Walsh (about 1863-1937.)  She was born in Ireland and died in Minnesota, USA.  There are two letters that survive written by Michael J Coen of Leamore to his dear sister and signed your brother.  (I don't know how Michael Coen and Sarah Casey are brother and sister unless there was a second marriage involved.)  Summaries of the letters follow:
1913 - refers to wife Anne, daughter Bee, and sons as well as Sarah's husband Jeremiah Walsh.  He writes about someone named Anne who is in the hospital.  The Sister who has charge of Anne is a daughter of James McLoughlius of Castlerea.  He also writes that Mrs. Casey has died and from what he wrote she may be related to the Anne in the hospital.
1917 - He got a new place just opposite Folliards Gate and is building a new house that will be the best in Leamore.  There was an exchange of property with John. (He has a son John but am not sure if that is the John in the letter.)  John had some land Sarah gave him which he exchanged for Michael's old place.  Sarah's old place went to the Caseys.
Michael J Coen of Leamore, Ballymoe, died 20 Nov 1931, aged 78 years and was interred in Ballintubber Cemetery.
Michael's wife Anne died November 1913.  Solemn Requiem High Mass was held at St Bride's Church, Ballintubber, with internment in the family burial ground, Ballintubber.  (I believe it might be spelled Ballintober today.)
I found a baptism Microfilm 04618/05 p. 33 Ballintubber and Ballymoe that I'm not sure is correct but the date matches age at death.
18 Feb 1853 Michael Coen Johannis Coen et Maria Casserly
Any assistance anyone could offer to solve this connection would be greatly appreciated.  I will be visiting Ireland in May 2020 and plan to spend a couple of days in Ballymoe area.  If there are records available I could check, please let me know.
Thank you

Northumberland / Acomb/Acham
« on: Sunday 15 November 15 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have ancestors (Bywell St Peter) who in late 1600s and early 1700s are recorded at Accomb which I assume is Acomb today, but from 1709-1717 are recorded at Acham.  Beginning in 1730s onward they are back in Accomb.  I cannot find any information on Acham.  Does anyone know if this is another name for Acomb or any other information about Acham?

Canada / Carl David Theodor Schultz, Saltfleet, Ontario
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 23:15 BST (UK)  »
Facts about Carl David Theodor Schultz’s Emigration to America
Carl received papers releasing him from service from the government of the Grand-duchy of Mecklenburg signed 21 Mar 1854.
Carl and Marie (Johanna Maria Carolina Schroeder) were married in the Township of Saltfleet, County of Wentworth, and Province of Canada on 1 Dec 1857 by special license.  Marriage certificate is signed by John English, Minister of the W. M. Church in Canada.
(He must have arrived in Ontario between those two dates.  My aunt told a story years ago about how the family ended up in Canada. Carl and Marie came over together but were not yet married. Soon after they got off the ship, a horse reared near them, and Carl calmed it down. The owner said something about it looked like Carl had worked with horses. When Carl said he had, the horse owner offered him a job but said his property was near Toronto. They went there. I have no idea if they disembarked in Canada or the U.S.)
They had five children Louisa – Louisa 1858, John 1860, George 1863, William 1867, and Henry 1870.
I have not found this family on the 1861 census.  They are in Ontario for 1871 census – Page 33, Province of Ontario, Census District No. 22 South Wentworth, Sub-District A Saltfleet Division ?? 2.  (Year: 1871; Census Place: Saltfleet, Wentworth South, Ontario; Roll: C-9923; Page: 33; Family No: 134.)  This entry is incorrect as it lists the children as being born in Germany.
The family is living in the United States 1 May 1875 at the time of the Minnesota census.  All children are listed as born in Canada on this census.
(They must have arrived in the U.S. between 1871 and 1875.)
Does anyone know where I can find information on the births/baptisms of the children?  Is there a way to find out where the marriage took place and if it still exists today?  Would it be beneficial to travel to Hamilton to find answers?  If so, where would be places to go?

Cumberland / Redwing Congregational Chapel Alston
« on: Saturday 14 June 14 21:19 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me if families went back to the Church of England from this chapel.  Sarah Lowes (and her sister Mary) were baptized in the parish church in Kirkhaugh, Northumberland (30 Jun 1810 and 2 Feb 1808) parents John Lowes and Sarah Watson.  Mary is 2nd daughter and Sarah 3rd daughter.  Using FamilySearch I found a marriage 2 Jun 1792 and a brother John, same parents, baptized 4 Mar 1803 both St John Garrigill.  I also found the following at Redwing Congregational Chapel Alston with parents John and Sarah Lowes:  William born 22 Feb 1793, baptized 3 Mar 1793; John born 18 Feb 1795, baptized 24 Mar 1795; and Betty born 21 May 1799, baptized 18 Jun 1799.  Going through the Bishops' Transcripts, I found a burial from Parish Register of Garrigill for John son of John & Sarah Lowes Tynehead 14 Jun 1797.
I was unable to find John 1803 in the BT to see which son he was.  Does anyone know if this could all be the same family or suggestions of where to check next?

George Richards married Elizabeth Jane Turner 12 June 1849 according to FamilySearch.  I am looking for the name and occupation of Elizabeth's father.  According to census records she was born in Northumberland (1851, 1871 Felton; 1861, 1881 Mitford; 1891 Netherwitton)  I am trying to see if she connects to my Turners of Netherwitton.  I realize that you are all very busy and hope that someone will be able to check the name for me.
Thanks,
Sue

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / North Grimston area Baptist records
« on: Thursday 23 February 12 02:40 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandfather William Stephenson died in North Grimston in 26 Nov 1867.  I have his death certificate.  He was buried at the parish church St Nicholas by coroner's orders.  Prior to his death, they had three children after moving to North Grimston from Northumberland.  I can find all three children in Free BMD Malton registration Jane Sep Q 1863, Thomas Stobart Sep Q 1865, Sarah Mar Q 1868.  None of them are baptized C of E.  William's birth and his mother's burial were recorded in Hamsterley (Durham near Bishop Auckland) Baptist records December 1831.  He was raised by his grandfather, aunt and uncle who are all buried in a Baptist churchyard.  I am hoping to find some records that would give birth or baptism information for these children.  Does anyone have any idea if there are any Baptist records surviving from that time period?  I'm not sure that they are Baptist but it seems like a logical place to start.  Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Tyrone / COMPLETED James and Sarah Stewart
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
I received this request from a distant relative in Scotland and since I haven't done much Irish research I am at a loss as to what to respond
I wonder if you could offer me some advice please. I am trying to trace the parents of Thomas Stewart born 25/11/1860 in Drumcrow, Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland (Ireland as it would have been then). He must have come over to UK before 25/5/1889 as that was when he married Elizabeth McIvor (or McIver) in Co Durham. I have his baptism cert from Killyman church which includes his parent's names and that's where the trail runs dry. He died in Co Durham in 1939. His parents were called James and Sarah Stewart, living in Drumcrow at the time of his birth. Do you know the best place for me to find out more about James and Sarah, siblings etc? Is there a particular website I should look at or is there anything you could possibly look at quickly for me.
Does anyone have any advise I can send him?
Sue
