Aberdeenshire / 128 Mid Stocket Road, Old Machar
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello folks
I have a death entry for an ancestor who died of senile decay at 128 Mid Stocket Road, Old Machar in 1897.  His son registered the death and has written 'Son and Inmate' or 'Son of Inmate'.

Can anyone tell me what that address was used as please?  I know there was a ragged school in that street and the boys were called inmates, but the older people were called patients.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Midlothian / Temperature and Weather Records for Morningside, Edinburgh 1930
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 01:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there.

I wonder if someone can help me please.  I would like to find out what the temperature, conditions and weather was like on the night of 27th January 1930 in Morningside, Edinburgh.

A relative was found drowned in a burn, and I  have a theory that she may have slipped in cold, icy conditions but have so far found nothing to prove or disprove my theory.

I have googled lots of weather and temperature related queries, and so far have found nothing to help.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should look, or who I should approach please?  Any help would be much appreciated.

regards
Janice

Midlothian / James Tainsh photograph
« on: Wednesday 23 September 15 11:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi there.  I wonder if anyone can help me here.  I am trying to reunite a photograph with its family.

I have a small photograph of a man in soldier's uniform and on the back it says James Tainsh, died in the war.  This man was a friend of my grandfather.

Scotland's people has a James R Tainsh died on 23 September 1915 in France and he is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

I found a birth of James Robertson Tainsh in 1886 and a marriage in 1909 in Edinburgh to a Mary S Russell.  I presume that this James Tainsh is the same person, and wonder if there are any of the family around who may like to have the photograph.  Of course, they may already have photographs of him, but I don't want to discard it without trying to give it to them.
Thanks. Janice

Clackmannanshire / James Haig and Helen Higgins memorial plaque in Summerhouse
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Help required please.  Does anyone know where this summerhouse is please?  It was located on a long walk in Clackmannanshire around 7 years ago by my nephew and his partner, and now cannot be found again.  They think it is near Dollar or Muckart.

The wall plaque is to the Haig family starting with James Haig and wife Helen Higgins.

Thank you very much in advance.  They are driving themselves mad trying to find it.

Hi there

Does anyone remember an elephant which stood near the entrance in Paisley Museum in the High Street?

I used to go there in my lunch hour from school and am sure that I can remember it.  My sister says I am havering and am thinking of the Art Galleries.

Can anyone help?  A photo would be great.

Thanks

Europe / Sigismund Lewis Photograph
« on: Monday 29 April 13 13:20 BST (UK)  »
Dear Forum Members

I wonder if anyone can help.  I am trying to obtain a photograph of Sigismund Lewis, son of Isaac Levy and Belah Levy.  He was born 1820 in Hamburg and qualified as a physician in 1846 Berlin.  He moved to Liverpool, England and did a lot of work with the poor there, both in health care and in finding work for people, such as making bags for watches.

His grave has recently been restored in Deane Road, Jewish Cemetery and the whole graveyard is in the process of being restored and graves re-erected.  There is also a new visitor centre.

There is no known photograph of Sigismund and his great great granddaughter, and the volunteers in the cemetery would all be delighted if they could find one.

Can anyone help?  We would be very grateful.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Webster Suicides, Wayworth Farm, Commondale
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
I wonder if anyone can help me.  I am looking for newspaper articles, or any information on suicides of possibly three Websters who farmed at Wayworth Farm in Commondale, Yorks.

The family think that 2 or maybe 3 of the Websters committed suicide,  and have found three deaths on the index as follows.  All registered in Guisbrough.

Joseph (67) 1915 Q4
Thomas (74) 1919 Q4
George (63) 1919 Q4

Can anyone give me any information as to which newspaper this would be reported in, and where I could look at the archives.  Alternatively, does anyone have any knowledge of these suicides.  It is interesting that they all seem to have died in the winter months. Two of them in the same year.

I hope you can help.  Thank you.

Hi there

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I have a relation who died in 1888 in Templehill Troon.  There is no street number or house name given.

Can anyone tell me if there was a hospital or sanitorium there at that time?

Thank you
