Tyrone / Christys of fivemile town
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello

we have traced my great grandfather to fivemile town in county tyrone. he married a Margaret gibson in 1900, his name was william christie b c 1870 but we think it may have been christy when he was in ireland. we would love to find out more information about margaret and william.
we believe that william was born in the workhouse and went to work on a farm when he was 10 years old, we are told that it was there he met margaret. apparently william was a gamekeeper and margaret a cook though this is only family story and we have no evidence to support this.
can anyone tell me how i would go about finding more information about these 2 ancestors. i think i have a marriage reference for them
Married on 5th july 1900 in fivemiletown county tyrone NI clogher parish church of ireland                but i have no idea how to use this tiny bit of information to actually order a marriage certificate, especially as we are not sure of the surname spelling.
can anyone help guide me in the right direction?
They left NI in approx 1902-1908. the family story is that they left ireland on a boat set for america but that there was a huge storm and the boat was damaged and blown off course ( i know its one of those family tales ) it eventually came to land in paisley scotland ( which is not on the coast as such) the family couldnt afford to wait for the boat to be fixed so they went inland to work and eventually settled in linlithgow (near edinburgh).  though apparently margarets brother did continue onto ireland when the time came.

william and margaret went on to have 7 children and over 30 grandchildren, so there are lots of decendents from these 2 people it would be lovely to be able to find out more about where we all come from.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / burial records
« on: Friday 24 October 08 16:37 BST (UK)  »
i think i have traced a big chunk of family to greenwich, my great great great grandfather john webb  lived there with his wife mary ann ( turner or douglass) from their marriage in 1838 till 1871 ( Possibly longer). they had at least 10 children and i was wondering if any of them died young whether i would be able to find some evidence in buriel records or possibly find evidence of children who were born and died between census'. ( i had family in scotland and havning found buriel records i uncovered a lot more siblings than census revealed).
John was a coachman in all census's from 1841 untill 1861 ( though not in 1871)- does anyone know if there are burial records that could help me find some siblings. i hate the idea that these children existed and i dont know about it, i want to record their existence in my family tree as much as everyone else, to give them a little respect.

Tyrone / christies from fivemiletown
« on: Monday 20 October 08 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello
my great great grandfather and great great grandmother are said to have come from fivemiletown northern ireland. I am not familiar with northern ireland so i did a google search and found out that it is in county Fermanagh ( please correct me and redirect me if im wrong!).
They left NI in approx 1902-1908. the family story is that they left ireland on a boat set for america but that there was a huge storm and the boat was damaged and blown off course ( i know its one of those family tales :D) it eventually came to land in paisley scotland ( which is not on the coast as such) the family couldnt afford to wait for the boat to be fixed so they went inland to work and eventually settled in linlithgow (near edinburgh). now the tale may be an utter myth but we think there is some truth in where they came from.
their names were William christie and his wife margaret christie ( formerly gibson). we also believe that william was a games keeper and his wife a cook.
we believe my great grandfather Henry christie was born in NI as well. he was born in c1902.
We believe the family may also have had another son called robert ( though we cant find any proof).
we have found birth records for siblings of henry born 1908 and onward but nothing prior to that.
if anyone knows of any christies in the fivemiletown area prior to 1908 it would be great to have some evidence that that is where the familys roots lie.
i hope someone can offer something new to this story.

Armed Forces / e webb died on hms captain in 1870
« on: Friday 17 October 08 20:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello
i am searching for information on an ancestor of mine who died on the hms captain in 1870. his name was E webb, my father was told he was named after him ( edwin fredrick) but we cant be sure without more information. we know that my fathers great grandfather james webb was a sailor and we think that maybe e webb was one of his brothers. There is a memorial plaque in st pauls cathedral with the names of all those lost on hms captain and my ancestor e webb is listed there ( so we know its not just some family rumour). we know that he was not a 'boy' on the ship ( so was probably over 18 years old at the time of sinking) . Any advice on how we can find out more details of this relative would be gratefully recieved.
thank you

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / information on christie family of 15-17
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 21:05 BST (UK)  »
hello

i am searching for any information on my family tree.
my grandmother elizabeth christie was born approximately 1918. she was one of 15 or 17 children and i would love to find out their names.
we think her mothers name was elizabeth jameson (but could be wrong)
Her father was called harold we think. and he had a brother robert christie who according to family rumour was an mp a councillor and a jp for the area. they lived in the linlithgow area. we think harold and robert came over from ireland. there is also a rumour that robert wrote a book about the  brothers trip to scotland.
Elizabeth  ( my grandmother) was one of the eldest children, (she raised the youngest phyllis as her own daughter). Elizabeth had an older sister called mary who was run over by a car aged 6 ( there cant be too many of these about i would guess) as my nan remembered this event it must have happened in the early 1920's.
my grandmother has unfortunately developed dementia and it is now too late to ask her all these questions, i wish i had found out more when i had the chance, but i hope i can at least find out some things now.
my grandmother married and moved to london and we have therefore no real contact with her roots just some half remebered stories that we are trying to piece together.
i hope someone can help-
